Belgium Booth Menu: Epcot Food & Wine Festival

The Belgium Global Marketplace at Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival is a relative newcomer (since 2010), but its waffles have already become guest favorites (although RIP to my long-gone favorite: the mussels with cream & garlic sauce). This post details the Belgium booth’s menu.

If you know one thing about Belgian cuisine, it’s probably waffles. There are persistent rumors that the Muscles from Brussels consumes a diet exclusively of waffles, preparing him to kick ass, take names, and be a time-traveling cop. (Seriously, is there anything JCVD can’t do?!)

In all seriousness, Belgium is an underrated food country. From Moules & Frites to hearty stews, pastries, and more, Belgian cuisine has a lot to offer. Our first exposure to all of this came a few years ago at Belgo Centraal in London, and the place blew our minds. Beyond food, Belgian beer is amazing.

Typically overshadowed by its neighbor to the east, Germany, I’d say that Belgium is a better beer country. (For me, only the United States gives it a run for its money–Germany’s reputation is based on Oktoberfest, not what it actually produces.)

Now that Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival has officially kicked off, we have updated this menu (and every menu) with food photos, thoughts on value for money, best use of Disney Dining Plan snack credits, and more…

Beer-braised Beef served with Smoked Gouda Mashed PotatoesWhen the menus were first released, I wondered whether the “waffle” part of this name was omitted by mistake. It was not–the beef is on a bed of mashed potatoes instead of a potato leek waffle this year. What used to be a unique dish is now fairly standard in my opinion. It still tastes good, but it’s nothing you should go out of your way to try.

Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped CreamI feel like this is one of those things that Epcot is obliged to order because everyone knows Belgium for its waffles…and while good, there’s nothing really exceptional about these. Probably better uses of your stomach space/money/Disney Dining Plan credits, but they are by no means bad.

Belgian Waffle with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Whipped CreamExact same idea, but drizzled with chocolate instead of berries. Totally a personal preference matter.

We don’t intend upon sampling all of the beverages at Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival (particularly because most are not unique to Epcot, so you can find a ton of info and reviews of them via Google), but here is the beer menu for Belgium:

  • Hoegaarden Witbier
  • Leffe Blonde Belgian Pale Ale
  • Stella Artois Hard Cidre

Your Thoughts

If you’ve tried any of the Belgium booth menu items, what did you think? Favorites? Least favorites? What was and wasn’t worth it? Anything on the menu you’re excited to try this year? Are you willing to sign my Change.org petition for JCVD to do a Timecop reboot? 😉 Hearing from you is half the fun, so please share your thoughts in the comments below!
