One More Disney Day Disneyland Trip Report

Sarah & Tom Bricker in Disneyland - "One More Disney Day"

We headed to Disneyland for the Leap Day 2012 “One More Disney Day” promotion. The highlight of the trip would be spending 24-consecutive hours in Disneyland, but a trip to The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California was another highlight, as was seeing the ABC television series Modern Family film an episode inside Disneyland. The definite “lowlight” was Disneyland being closed one morning due to a bomb scare (it was actually just a geocache). As always, we ate plenty of food along the way and took thousands of photos.

Top 10 Disney World Counter Service Restaurants

Here is our list of the top 10 best counter service restaurants at Walt Disney World. Of Walt Disney World’s hundred-plus dining options, a lot of our favorites are the more well-known table service restaurants, but we also eat at a lot of counter service restaurants. In fact, we eat mostly at counter service restaurants! (You wouldn’t know that by looking at our Dining Reviews Index, as there are far more table service reviews than counter service–I guess I need to start posting reviews from our counter service meals!). For those unfamiliar with the term, counter service (or quick service) restaurants are Disney’s equivalent of fast food. Don’t let the negative connotation of ‘fast food’ dissuade you from trying these restaurants, as all of them are truly excellent.

This list is based on our subjective determination of best based upon our opinion of value, quality, convenience, and theme. All participate in the Disney Dining Plan as counter service credits. Flame Tree BBQ also accepts the Tables in Wonderland card for a 20% discount, making it especially appealing to us! (more…)

Best Disney Dining Plan Character Meals

This list of the best-value Character Meals at Walt Disney World will help you maximize your value on the Disney Dining Plan as it ranks the character meals that would be the most expensive if you were paying out of pocket. Eating at these Disney character meals gets you the most bang for your buck and saves you the most money on the Disney Dining Plan. Taking a trip while on the Disney Dining Plan can be a great way to efficiently hit the more expensive restaurants at Walt Disney World when on a budget.

As Cinderella’s Royal Table is a two-credit experience, it’s not as good of a per-credt value character meal. If you are on the Deluxe Dining Plan or have credits that might otherwise go to waste, you should definitely consider booking Cinderella’s Royal Table. Note that it is the most sought-after restaurant at Walt Disney World, so you will need to make advance dining reservations far (as close to 180 days as possible) in advance. You will most likely not have success with walk-ups to Cinderella’s Royal Table.

For those confused as to why you’d want to eat at the most expensive restaurants possible when on the Disney Dining Plan to “save” more money, it’s really quite simple: since you pre-pay a set daily amount for the Disney Dining Plan, regardless of where you eat, you get the most value out of the Disney Dining Plan if you eat at restaurants that would be more expensive if you were paying out of pocket. Disney iPhoneography Tips

Tips for iPhoneography at Walt Disney World and Disneyland

Accessorizing: the most important part of iPhoneography! ;)

The robust iPhone 4 and 4s camera, collection of apps, and accessories have all led to the rise of “iPhoneography,” a type of photography that allows anyone with an iPhone an expressive way to capture the art of their everyday lives. This beginner’s guide to iPhoneography at Walt Disney World and Disneyland provides iPhone-photographers with a list of apps, equipment, and tips that are “must owns.” At Walt Disney World and Disneyland, iPhoneography is especially fun and popular, and these spots are great for iPhoneography for many of the same reasons they’re great for photography. They’re beautiful places and have a lot of great subjects. Disney as a subject of iPhoneography, like all iPhoneography, has exploded in popularity in the last year. There are communities of Disney fans sharing their iPhoneography, and the common equipment and intuitive tools to capture the photos is a great equalizer that puts all fans on (mostly) the same playing field. 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens Review

Fisheyes lenses are great for Walt Disney World and Disneyland photography. This fisheye lens is sold under multiple names (Rokinon, Samyang, Bower, Pro-Optic) but all are made by Samyang Optics. Rokinon is the most common brand-name for the lens in the US, and is the brand I own, so I’m going to refer to this lens as the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens. If you see an “8mm f/3.5 fisheye lens” under one of the aforementioned brand names, this is the lens.

Following the reception of the Tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 review I posted, I’ve decided to occasionally post individual reviews of specific photography equipment that is especially useful at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. That Tamron lens is probably the most versatile Disney photography lens, and this one is probably the most FUN lens. I’m not going to individually review everything in my camera bag, you can refer to our capsule overview reviews of different photography equipment, accessories, books, and software for Walt Disney World and Disneyland photography for that. If you really dig the photo-oriented stuff, you should probably check out ISO 5571, a podcast I co-host that is entirely focused on Walt Disney World and Disneyland photography. We also try to make it somewhat humorous, although I’m sure we largely fail at that! (more…)
