If you read our Disney Tourist Blog 2012 Year in Review post, you knew this was coming. We’re launching a “spin-off” blog of sorts called TravelCaffeine.com that will cover travel and photography. Actually, I don’t know if it can be called a spin-off blog since it is the blog that is broader in focus, and Disney Tourist Blog is a single-subject website.

Rather than regurgitating what I’ve posted on the “Welcome” post over there, I encourage you to head over there and check it out!

Disney Tourist Blog Implications

We know that this new blog won’t be for everyone, and those who it does appeal to might be groaning at the prospect of having to visit another blog. We get that, but separating the technical photography posts (that have always been a bit out of place on a Disney blog that is best described as a “planning” blog) out on another blog where we can also share our non-Disney photos and experiences just makes sense.

Fortunately, if there is any “bad news,” that’s it. The fact that folks interested in both sets of content will now have to visit two blogs. That’s it. Now, the good news. (more…)

10 Awesomest Blog Posts of 2012

On Friday I shared the best posts from 2012 that didn’t find much of an audience their first time through. Judging by the comments that suddenly appeared and the new social media shares of those 10 articles, it seems like many of you discovered these posts and enjoyed them. That post took a fraction of the time to write as a “real” blog post, and was read more than a “real” post. My laziness prevails!

Since 2012 still isn’t over and since these “top 10″ posts are really easy to curate, I’m going to give you another one! This one features my 10 favorite posts from 2012. Please note that in 2013, I’ll spend the first six months of the year writing actual substantive posts, and the second six months of the year looking back at my “best” posts of the year, with top 10 lists like this that are all basically variants of the same list. On the plus side, I pledge that I’ll focus on altering words in a “cutesy” manner to fit my usage rather than choosing context-appropriate words (a la Slayer Slang). Yep, 2013 will be the awesomest year of all. It’ll be far more awesomey than 2012! ;)

As noted, these are my favorite posts of the year. Most were fairly popular, which is good in the sense that reader tastes overlap with mine fairly well, even if they weren’t the top posts in terms of overall readership. I’ll be sharing the top posts, quantitatively, on Monday; the 10 worst posts on Tuesday; the 10 posts that used the word “communist” on Thursday; and, the top 10 posts as picked by a badger on Friday! (Kidding. Although it’s fun to do these top 10 posts, I am acutely aware of the fact that they are lame substitutes for actually writing content, and they grow old fast. I will be doing a top photos of 2012 post on Monday…which is totally different…right?!)

10. Disney Facebook Cover Photos – When I originally posted this at the beginning of the year, I had no idea more than a few people would use the few Cover photos I posted. After numerous updates based upon reader requests, this went on to be the single most popular post of the year. From my perspective, it’s cool to see people using photos I’ve captured.

9. Disney Moderate Resort Rankings – Many of you agreed with my rankings, but just as many disagreed. Half of you are right, but I won’t say which half! ;) I enjoy writing articles like this that compare offerings at Walt Disney World, which seem to be more useful to readers that unqualified numerical ratings. Perhaps I’ll do more posts like this in 2013. (Magic Kingdom Restaurant Rankings? Disney Bar Rankings? Would this type of post interest you?)

8. Nikon D600 Review – I’ve never done a review quite so technical (and probably won’t again), but I got a camera on the day it was released for the first time ever, and I was excited. Since this release was one of the first Nikon D600 reviews posted, it was linked to by a lot of prominent photography sites, often with a preface along the lines of “a surprisingly well-done review from a Disney fan site.” As if it’s a shock that a Disney fan can write a reasonable review of anything outside of Disney…

7. Disneyland Bar Crawl Guide – Drinking around Disneyland Resort isn’t nearly as popular as “Drinking Around the World (Showcase),” but I’m hopeful this guide will change that! (Just a tad bit of hubris there… ;) ) Although it’s due for an update now that Cars Land is open, much research was undertaken to assemble this guide for drinking around Disneyland Resort. It’s field-tested, and it’s a lot of fun!

6. In Defense of Starbucks on Main Street – The posts where I share my strongly-held opinions are my favorite ones to write, and I had a lot of fun with this one and the comments that ensued (at least, the ones that presented reasoned counterpoints). Too bad I forgot to finish that “In Defense of Alcohol in the Magic Kingdom” post that I started, but is still sitting in my “Drafts” folder in WordPress (along with one complaining about EPCOT’s 30th anniversary…).

5. One More Disney Day Recap Photo – In terms of memorable posts, this might be #1. I wrote this several times in my head the morning after One More Disney Day as I sat in bed trying to sleep. In retrospect, I wish I would have typed out my thoughts in the heat of the moment, even if they would have been inarticulate gibberish due to my sleep deprived state. The only thing that kept this post succinct (a rare quality in my posts) is that our plane started to board, so I had to wrap it up.

4. Plaza Inn Restaurant Review – Definitely my most-off-the-wall restaurant review of the year. (I quoted “Audio-Animatronics” Lincoln (as opposed to real Lincoln) in this article and basically accused Sarah of treason. I love posts like this where I get going on goofy tangents, but people reading this blog for serious advice probably think to themselves, “don’t quit your day job, idiot.”

3. Tear Down That Sorcerer’s Hat! – I’ve been complaining about the Big Sorcerer’s Hat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for years; I finally put those complaints into a blog post this year, as I tore apart some of the myths surrounding the BAH. The Sorcerer Hat is still up (I expected it to come down with 2 days of the article being posted ;) ), so I guess it was a failure overall.

2. Disney World on a Budget Tips – One day while sitting around watching my Twitter updates pour in, I saw two tweets in a row for different articles on saving money at Disney. Neither one of the articles contained any information of value…they just contained tips like “use Disney transportation so you don’t have to rent a car.” This article was my “response” to articles like that, and I tried to include simple tips for the first timer, but also more specific tips, like building your own (large) Dole Whip at Captain Cook’s instead of ordering a smaller Dole Whip at Aloha Isle.

1. Big Savings on the Deluxe Dining Plan? – We don’t generally do things because they’re “bloggable,” but we tried the Deluxe Dining Plan in 2012 as an experiment to write about how much we could save on the plan. Yep, we did it all for you readers, and were not at all motivated by the prospect of eating delicious meals at nice restaurants. The sacrifices we make for you people!!! ;) (more…)

10 Best Posts of 2012 That You Didn’t Read

Pretty much everyone who has a blog is taking the opportunity to share their “Top 10″ posts of 2012. It’s a brilliant move, really. Not only does it spare the author from having to write new content, but it allows them to remind readers of some good posts they might have missed.

Since I’m incredibly lazy, this new holiday blogging practice is scratching me right where I itch! Of course, I don’t want to follow blindly along doing what everyone else is doing, so I’m adding my own twist to the Top 10. I’m going to share my 10 best “under-appreciated” blog posts. I got the idea from TV Guide, which used to run an annual issue on the “Best Show You’re Not Watching.” This is how I discovered one of my favorite television shows of all-time, Sports Night, so I figure it will be how you discover some of the greatest blog posts of all time. At least some of the greatest on this blog…which is basically the bowels of the internet, so that’s not really saying much.

Anyway, here we go. The top 10 posts you (maybe) didn’t read:

10. One More Disney Day Trip Report – With over 24 consecutive hours in the park, plus a trip to the rarely-seen Walt Disney Studios, this is probably one of our best-ever trip reports. It was not nearly as popular as our relatively mundane February 2012 Walt Disney World Trip Report, though!

9. Tips for Traveling on a Budget – A lot of you question how we can afford to travel so much. I set out our strategy for frugal travel, but not many people gave it a read. I guess most readers just like to overpay for travel…or already know it all? ;)

8. Top 10 Disney Dining Tips – Admittedly, this one has a few generic ones that will have you thinking “duh” if you’re a Disney vet. I assume that’s why this post wasn’t too popular. That said, there is some good stuff here for guests of all experience levels.

7. Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 Lens Review – I started out the review with these sentences: “The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens is the Chuck Norris of wide angle lenses. Actually, that’s an understatement. It’s the Chuck Norris+Jack Bauer+James Bond+whatever other badass you can think of, all rolled into one, in lens form.” Even if you don’t like photography, how could you not read that post?!

6. Gardens of Walt Disney World Review – I praised this book as my third favorite Walt Disney World book ever, but I think many people didn’t care because they’re not interested in gardening. Neither am I. This book is a top-notch title and should be owned by anyone who is a Walt Disney World fan.

5. Citricos Review – I didn’t do nearly as many dining reviews this year as I should have, but the Walt Disney World ones I did write were generally well-received. The exception was this Citricos review, which offers a contrast to most reviews I’ve read of Citricos.

4. Disney California Adventure Retrospective: From Burger Invasion to Buena Vista Street – I spent more time on this blog post (writing and acquiring permission to use historic photos of Disney California Adventure) than any other blog post of the year. Much like the original DCA, not many people seemed to care. It’s worth a browse if only to see the photos and see just how bad this park used to be.

3. The Land Vintage Photos – My (still ongoing) EPCOT Center tribute posts have been reasonably popular (especially Journey into Imagination), with the exception of The Land, which is actually my second favorite post in the series. Just remember: if you dislike Kitchen Kabaret, you dislike America.

2. Cars Land Photos & Review – I thought more people would be interested in reading about and seeing more photos of the biggest addition to any Disney theme park of 2012 (sorry, New Fantasyland, you’re not even in the same league as Cars Land).  Maybe this will find more of an audience now that Cars Land rumors are swirling for Walt Disney World!

1. Disney Counter Service Renaissance – While the rest of the internet is complaining about the Disney Dining Plan destroying the quality of food at Walt Disney World, I took the position that counter service food is actually on the upswing. Given this article’s reception, I’m guessing not many of you agreed with me. Well, you’re all wrong! ;) (more…)

Disney Tourist Blog: 2012 Year in Review

I want to start this post out by thanking you all. When we first started this blog last year, it was in response to suggestions on trip reports I had written on WDWMagic, and I figured a handful of people would read the blog each day. It started as a fun experiment, basically. We were way late to the blogosphere, so I wasn’t expecting any kind of serious traction. The actual response to the website has blown us away, and we’re honored and humbled that so many people enjoy reading our thoughts, opinions, and tips, and that so many of you enjoy my photos.

2012 has been a great year for Disney Tourist Blog. Year over year traffic has more than tripled (now three people in my family read the blog instead of just my mom ;) ). We have regular readers all around the world. (We are oddly popular in Australia, and I’m not really sure why.) It still boggles my mind that people want to read the words I write–even if I know most of you are just here for the photos!

Unfortunately, the growth hasn’t been all good. You may have noticed a lot of downtime on the website this summer and fall. Traffic became so heavy that the website was down just as much as it was up, and it took me a while to come up with a viable solution. The solution involved some back-end work to make the site more lightweight, and also spending more on hosting…a lot more. Our monthly host bill is now substantially more than our bill for the entire year of 2011. The website is now more stable, but it’s still not perfect. Who knew that running a website could be so expensive and difficult?! (For this reason, we are also incredibly grateful to those of you who have made purchases through our Amazon affiliate links; they’re what keeps this blog going.)

One of the “victims” of this traffic situation has been trip reports, as the photo-heavy reports regularly cripple the site. It’s a bit ironic that what brought many of you here in the first place is also what ended up almost killing this site! I’ve tried a few solutions to ease the strain on the server, including multi-page reports. I’m still trying to find a workable solution to this, as I know many of you love the trip reports. (more…)

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family to yours! Regardless of what you celebrate during this holiday season, we hope you all have had a great holiday season filled with family, friends, fun, and…uhh…Figment? Sometimes the holidays can be hectic, fast-paced, and even stressful, but we hope you’ve had a relaxing holiday season, and if not…we hope a vacation is in the near future for you!

We’ll be back later this week with a “year in review” article as we look back and look forward, sharing some of our mundane plans for this blog in 2013. For now, we wanted to share holiday wishes with you all! Below some festive photos that our sons, Yossarian the Cat and Walter E. Dogsney, wanted to share with you. Although they don’t write articles for the blog (yet), they are actually big contributors. They typically fight for positioning on my lap as I sit down to write articles for the blog at night. Happy Holidays from Walt Disney World (Plus A Survey)

Walt Disney World ResortMagic KingdomMickey's Very Merry Christmas PartyFireworks at the conclusion of the Celebrate the Season stage show during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party! For more Disney Christmas content, check out: http://www.disneytouristblog.com/tag/christmas/

This photo is from the “finale” of the Celebrate the Season Cinderella Castle stage show that is performed during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Every year we go to the party, we end up watching this show twice. Not just because I really enjoy it, but because the first time I usually forget about the fireworks and miss that shot. This year, I remember, and got fireworks shots from both shows (one close-up, one zoomed out like this–the photo in this post is from 2011).

Survey!

That said, the real point of this post is not the photo, it’s getting some feedback from you. I just feel I’d be cheating you if I expected something of you but didn’t “give” something in return…even though I know everyone’s favorite hobby is completing surveys!

I often joke that I’m going to convert this blog to posts about dachshunds or other odd things, since I have unilateral control over the content that gets posted. The dachshund part is obviously a joke, but the unilateral control part is not. From what I can tell, this is not the norm in regularly-updated blogs. Most have a slew of writers or some sort of editorial board. A lot of readers have volunteered to write guests posts for this blog, which is very flattering, but my response has always been (and will always be) “Thanks, but no thanks. This is a ‘personal’ blog.” I firmly believe that’s the right approach for this blog, but the problem with my totalitarian regime is that sometimes I get tunnel vision. I write for myself, and miss topics about which I might enjoy writing and that might appeal to a lot of readers, but that I just don’t consider. (more…)
