Toy Story Land Opening in Summer 2018
As expected, Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will officially open in Summer 2018. This is anticipated to be the big draw at Walt Disney World next year, and it opening for the summer travel season is no surprise.
The announcement of the Summer 2018 opening is something we predicted prior to the D23 Expo, and that was exactly what Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, announced. Somewhat surprisingly, not much else was shared about Toy Story Land.
There was a cute or cheesy (depending upon one’s perspective) reconnaissance video by the toy soldiers and other Toy Story characters that gave some glimpses at Shanghai Disneyland and Walt Disney World construction on the Toy Story Lands, but that was about it…
Other than that, no real news to report beyond what was originally released with the Toy Story Land Announcement two years ago.
Personally, I would not be surprised to see Toy Story Land soft open in time for Easter/Spring Break 2018. I’m not ready to make that ‘bold’ prediction just yet, but it certainly appears that construction is quite far along.
While this Toy Story Land will differ considerably from the existing Toy Story Lands in Hong Kong and Paris, the premise remains the same: guests shrink to the size of a toy to explore the world of Andy’s backyard with favorite Toy Story characters, including Woody and Buzz.
Walt Disney World’s Toy Story Land will feature two new themed attractions. The first of those is Slinky Dog Dash, which will be a family coaster attraction that zips, dodges, and dashes around the many turns and drops that Andy has created to really make Slinky and his coils stretch to his limits.
Alien Swirling Saucers will also be a new attraction at Toy Story Land. It’s designed as a toy play set that Andy got from Pizza Planet, inspired by the first “Toy Story” film. Aliens are flying around in their toy flying saucers and trying to capture your rocket toy vehicle with “The Claw.”
I know a lot of Walt Disney World fans are hyped for Toy Story Land, so I won’t rain on this particular parade with a “My Reaction” section on this bit of news. 😉

Your Thoughts
Are you excited for Toy Story Land, or is this just a light appetizer until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019? 😉 Hearing your feedback about your experiences is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts or questions below in the comments!
We r really excited. My son loves toy story. He would live to see a new pizza planet to eat. He was very disappointed when it was gone last time
As a family with 3 boys under 7, this is a great addition we are all excited for! Hollywood Studios has, IMO, been the park offering the least for little kids (at least for my kids). And obviously the last couple years have made it even worse. Right now you got the Disney Junior and Star Wars stuff (all mainly character meet and great driven) and Toy Story Mania. Having Toy Story Land and the other planned additions for the kids (i.e. the Mickey ride) + Star Wars land in the same park….going to be perfect for this 30-something with young kids. Super JACKED!
What can we expect restaurant-wise in the new toy story land? Thank you.
Rather than having only one iconic theme of Toy Story at Hollywood Studios; I always felt that Pixar should have been the main theme of this addition instead. Think of what the Walt Disney Imagineering Dept. could have done by adding Finding Nemo, Cars and Wall-E to it.
When they say “family coaster” does that mean height requirement may be similar to Barnstormer’s 35″? The track under construction looked to have a steep loop. Thanks.
I am a little surprised they didn’t put at leat one more ride. – even another Dumbo or Aladdin type ride. I am holding out judgment until I see more and will absolulty want to see it, but I like HS anyway & since I don’t go more than every 2 or 3 years – I like to go to the shows & see the characters so it is still a full day park for me.
It isn’t something that would push me to make a trip just for that – but then nothing really is!
If I can afford to go to Disney – I want to go! Regardless of what is new!
Yawn. Not even my Toy Story loving 6 and 8-year olds can muster excitement for this announcement. I kind of don’t care what they do thematically in DHS anymore. There hasn’t been a true “studios” experience in ages. These rides just don’t sound exciting, and it seems odd to theme an entire park section around a couple of attractions. I feel like this park’s future moniker could be “Star Wars Land plus some other stuff no one’s as focused on.” I visited Universal Hollywood this spring and had the same experience. It felt like Harry Potter world, plus a bunch of not as well thought out, disparate IP grabs. At least DHS still has ToT, RRC and a couple of good dining experiences…for now, anyway.
Couldn’t care less. I am on the west coast, so I think we will stick to Disneyland for Star Wars Land, and avoid Hollywood Studios. I was excited for the Mickey ride, but when I saw the concept art.. I am not a fan of that style of art for the cartoon series. I was thinking it would be more.. iconic. We will still go to WDW, but probably not invest in a hopper, just spend time at Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. I still think Bugs Land at DCA is better than this, cute design, lots of rides with no height restriction (all of the rides at CarsLand have height restrictions), so if you have a baby to toddler aged child, the only ride you can take them on is Ariel. Bugs Land even has a splash park, you can easily take a lot of littles and spend an hour or more there. AND now the rumor is they are taking that out for Marvel(?!) when most of the back lot is a waste of space! And Pixar Pier seems like they will just theme some of the carnival booths to pixar and make an inside character meet and greet (Pixar characters already met there) so not really adding any rides/attractions that will increase capacity, but taking away lots of rides that were very useful for families. I wish Toy Story Land in HS would just add more, even if they were really well themed generic fair rides (like Bugs Land), super creative how they used popsicle sticks for benches, Flik’s Flyers is another favorite with “used food containers,” the barcodes, the nutritional information, it is all so detailed. They could do the same with Toy Story rides. There’s not a lot at Hollywood Studios for families with young kids, besides seeing the same shows that have been there for the past 20+ years. AND it would be a perfect opportunity to have a Pizza Planet again, or some other really creative restaurant that is kid friendly, and extremely well designed, like Flo’s at Cars Land. I hope we hear more, but I doubt it, and it will just be these two rides.
I am excited Hollywood studios will have at least another ride to add to the equation, if nothing else that is a good thing
I think the concept has a lot of promise, but I wonder if it will feel gimmicky and quickly thrown together instead of an immersive experience.
I’m disappointed they can only afford one flat ride. Why not a few extra spinning rides plus a carousel? They are not costly additions compared with Star Wars Land. DCA has 9 flat rides in comparison.

LOL. You do not seem very excited. What are your reservations? I’m not particularly pumped for this land but it will most likely be an improvement over the current offerings. HS has been a train wreck for awhile now outside of Tower of Terror and the Brown Derby Cobb Salad.
He gets into a little more depth on his thoughts about the land in the land announcement story posted a couple of years ago that is linked in this story. https://www.disneytouristblog.com/toy-story-land-announced-disney-world/
