Avengers Campus at Disneyland Paris Opening Date & Details

Disney has shared new details & info about Avengers Campus, including an official opening date for the Marvel land at the Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland Paris, how it compares and contrasts with its counterpart in California, and brief commentary about our anticipation for this addition.

Avengers Campus will showcase live-action stunts, encounters with super heroes, two action-packed attractions, themed restaurants, and retail. This first-ever Marvel land in Europe comes as part of Disneyland Paris’ most ambitious transformation and expansion of Walt Disney Studios Park since its opening, with more to come in phases between now and the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Characters appearing in Avengers Campus will include Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Black Widow, Thor and Loki. Plus, Sam Wilson as Captain America, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Okoye and the Dora Milaje from Wakanda, will make their first appearances at Disneyland Paris. While this might sound similar to the Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, there are also plenty of differences.

For example, one exclusive addition to Avengers Campus at WDSP is “F.R.I.D.A.Y.” the famous Artificial Intelligence designed by Tony Stark. F.R.I.D.A.Y will be watching out and interacting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe super heroes.

Uploaded to the building façade of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: FLIGHT FORCE building, which is the Avengers Headquarters, she will also welcome recruits to the Campus, monitor it for threats, and signal the arrivals and departures of Avengers.

Additionally, guests will be able to meet Spider-Man, Iron Man or Captain Marvel in a new dedicated building unique to Avengers Campus in Disneyland Paris, called the Training Center.

For this unique character meet & greet, a dynamic “freeze frame” video sequence–created by PhotoPass with 27 cameras all around the room–can capture encounters with Captain Marvel or Iron Man and turn them into unforgettable moments.

In another somewhat unique twist, a sleek new high-tech vehicle will patrol Avengers Campus throughout the day dispatching the heroes in style. DCA has had something similar, but this is a different and more ambitious twist on that.

Also like DCA is the presence of the Quinjet, which will be the focal point of special missions. This will still be elevated above guests, but will have a lower location to give it a more prominent presence in Avengers Campus.

As with Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort, there will be interactive entertainment in the Marvel land at Disneyland Paris. Guests will be able to train with Black Panther’s loyal protectors, the Dora Milaje, and learn from the warriors of Wakanda on what it’s like to be a member of this elite royal guard.

There will also be a goofy, fun-filled dance-off with Star Lord and Gamora from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, the Gateway Portal will give guests the chance to capture the moment when they meet one of the many Marvel heroes of Avengers Campus.

Next, we’ll turn to the attractions of the land. First up, the brand new Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure. This is a clone from California–an interactive, family-friendly dark ride in which guests help Spider-Man capture out-of-control Spider-Bots, Peter Parker’s robot sidekicks, before they wreak havoc on Avengers Campus.

Through technology that recognizes body movements and gestures, guests will reach out their hands and sling webs from their wrists, just like Spider-Man. As the WEB Slinger vehicles progress and the mission continues, Spider-Bots will become harder and harder to beat as they continue to multiply. After helping Spider-Man trap the rogue Spider-Bots, recruits will be able to see how many Spider-Bots they caught, with individual and team scores.

If Toy Story Mania is like a Wii game on wheels, Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure is like an Xbox Kinect game on wheels. It’s fun, chaotic, and a bit of a workout. Definitely nothing revolutionary or worth planning a trip around, but a good time nonetheless.

There’s arguably a bit too much going on, but the narrative framing is a nice touch and something missing from too many shooter rides like this. However, most of the themed design that sets the stage for the ride itself are random junk in the California version. Hopefully some of this is refined a bit in the Disneyland Paris incarnation of the attraction.

The second attraction is AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: FLIGHT FORCE, which is as a replacement for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. Exclusive to Disneyland Paris, AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: FLIGHT FORCE is a high-speed roller coaster, guests will team up with none other than Captain Marvel herself, with Brie Larson reprising her role as Carol Danvers.

Recruits will be briefed by Iron Man, equipped with a brand-new Mark 80 armor exclusively designed for his missions at Avengers Campus. This Iron Man is a new generation Audio-Animatronics figure exclusive to Disneyland Paris and the first-ever Avenger Audio-Animatronics figure. (The Marvel attractions in Disneyland and Walt Disney World are screen-based, with the exception of one Rocket the Raccoon in DCA.)

With no time to waste, guests have the opportunity to team up with the two Avengers on a high-speed mission. They will embark and fly up through space in a vehicle that Stark has equipped with a homing device, to lure the threat away from planet Earth. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: FLIGHT FORCE is a thrill ride that features a high-speed launch of 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds, three inversions, two rollover loops, and one corkscrew.

Even though this is technically a reimagining of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, I’m personally more excited for AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: FLIGHT FORCE. The Iron Man AA sounds awesome, and if Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind taught me anything, it’s that roller coasters can deliver storytelling. I’m cautiously optimistic about it.

Another exclusive to Avengers Campus at Disneyland Paris is Stark Factory, which is a quick-service restaurant. Formerly an assembly line for Howard Stark, it features relics of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s earlier activities.

Stark Factory also hosts many “Easter Eggs” hidden as fan tributes, including artifacts built by Tony Stark. The highlight here is the impressive HulkBuster – the armor he created with the help of Bruce Banner for the Hulk.

Then there’s Pym Kitchen is an innovative science lab where the food and drinks tell the story. Just as Ant-Man and The Wasp use “Pym Particles” to grow and shrink objects, Pym Technologies applies this same science to bring you shareable bites, inventive entrees and sweet treats.

This restaurant exists at DCA and is cute but undersized. The menu is hit or miss, but it looks like it’ll be mostly different at the Walt Disney Studios Park, anyway. (Also, the counter service scene at WDSP is so bad that “hit or miss menu” would be a big upgrade.)

In addition to these main restaurants, there are several other fast food options in Avengers Campus. The WEB – Worldwide Eating Brigade – food truck will be run by the WEB workshop’s inventors and serve a variety of Asian noodles and coconut balls.

The FAN-tastic Food Truck will be parked nearby, serving New York style hot dogs, including vegan sausages, various types of sauces and toppings; and a cheesecake on a stick for dessert.

Avengers Campus will also be home of the Super Diner, a small traditional American restaurant serving Reuben sandwiches, a signature North American recipe made with corned beef, cheese, Sauerkraut, and a savoury dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread.

Avengers Campus opens at Disneyland Paris on July 20, 2022. This new Marvel area is an entirely reimagined land in Walt Disney Studios Park that’s dedicated to discovering, recruiting, and training the next generation of heroes in Disneyland Paris. Everyone is invited to join the action, teaming up with the Avengers and their allies throughout the land to sling webs like Spider-Man, fly into space with Iron Man and Captain Marvel, and re-fuel in true super hero fashion.

Avengers Campus is the next key milestone in Walt Disney Studios Park multi-year transformation plan and opens as part of the Disneyland Paris 30th Anniversary celebration. With Avengers Campus and Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, Disneyland Paris is poised to be a popular destination for Marvel fans to live an immersive experience among their favourite Super Heroes.

Overall, we’re cautiously optimistic about the debut of Avengers Campus at Walt Disney Studios Park. Admittedly, this land is far from our favorite at Disney California Adventure…and this is a partial clone of that. However, our frustrations there largely lie with befuddling design choices–the lack of seating for the counter service restaurant, no shade anywhere, limited viewing angles for the Doctor Strange show, and overall ‘repurposed’ aesthetic of the land.

It’s entirely possible that Avengers Campus won’t have any of these issues, in which case it’ll be a more pleasant place that’s inhabited by Marvel super heroes and features a couple of fun rides. The characters roaming around are the land’s strength at DCA, and if Avengers Campus could offer that while being a superior space, it could be a winner. There’s also the practical reality that this is an addition to Walt Disney Studios Park, far and away the worst Disney theme park in the world, so literally everything is graded on a curve. It’s almost certain that Avengers Campus will be a hugely positive addition for this particular park.
