Disney World February 2012 Trip Report Part 9

We got to Disney’s Hollywood Studios before the sunset, but unfortunately, there wasn’t a beautiful sunset to photograph from any of the places I scoured in the park. I’ve had this issue many times at Disney’s Hollywood Studios: it appears the sunset will be gorgeous as the sky leading up to it looks great, but then…nothing. I think it’s due to elevations and perspectives within the park. About the only place I’ve ever had a great view of the sunset was from on-board the Tower of Terror. Of course, I could just be having poor luck or not know where to look.

Whatever the case may be, I wandered around like a chicken with my head cut off for a while before meeting back up with Sarah and Nick at the Hollywood Brown Derby. It turned out that the restaurant was not accepting walk-ups because it was completely booked. Luckily, Nick knew the manager; after brief chat with him we were seated in the otherwise closed-off Bamboo Room.

We had eaten at Hollywood Brown Derby for the first time the previous October, but then we only ordered Cobb Salads and desserts because we had eaten way too much at Food & Wine Festival. We knew right then that we’d have to come back, as we saw so many delicious entrees pass our table.

This visit to Hollywood Brown Derby did not disappoint.

Somehow, I forgot to order an appetizer. I must have been really tired. I had one picked out, and I even thought I ordered it, but when Sarah’s and Nick’s appetizers showed up, I did receive anything. I thought maybe mine was just coming later (at this point I still hadn’t realized that I forgot to order one), so I didn’t say anything. I did think it was a little odd that our server didn’t say “yours will be coming soon” to me, but that wasn’t a big deal.

Finally, after she passed a couple more times without saying anything, I began to wonder what was going on. Then Sarah said, “you know, I don’t remember you ordering an appetizer.” So I began to start thinking, and I couldn’t remember ordering it, either. How do you forget to order an appetizer?! So I asked our waitress whether I ordered one. She laughed, and informed me that I had not. She was really polite about it, and asked if I wanted one. I decided against it at that point, which ended up being a good thing because I could barely eat my entree and dessert.

Still, how do you forget to order an appetizer? This has to be fairly unprecedented. I can understand “forgetting” if you’ve been sitting at the bar imbibing, but all I had been drinking was Coke! Perhaps we need to start getting more sleep on “vacation.” (That, or we need to start calling it something else–“vacation” connotes relaxation. We have TONS of fun when we travel, but we rarely relax. We go a mile a minute!)

I did remember to order my entree, and that was the Duck Two Ways. It is tender and flavorful with a hint of maple and a perfect confit wrap that really adds to the taste. I actually preferred this to the Filet of Beef that Sarah ordered, which was also exceptional, tender, and well flavored, by just a bit. It’s rare for me to prefer duck to a filet, so I consider this to be high praise.

The one thing that the filet offers that I cannot resist is the White Truffle Forest Mushroom Whipped Potatoes. I love mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and anything “truffle.” These were probably the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever tasted, and when Sarah let me taste hers, I attempted to eat them all (mission: failed). Next time, I’ll likely order a side of these potatoes to accompany whatever I order. They were really that excellent.

For desserts, we had the Banana-White Chocolate Toffee Tower on Cocoa-Almond Cookie, Citrus Honey Nest filled with Candied Ginger Blueberries over a Lemon Cheesecake, and Bananas “Foster” and Chocolate Three Ways–Dark Almond-Buttermilk Cake layered with Milk Chocolate Truffle Crème and White Chocolate Chambord. These were all excellent. I could barely finish mine, and I didn’t have an appetizer, so I can only imagine how much trouble Nick and Sarah had with theirs!

After Brown Derby, we headed to One Man’s Dream, which is always a fun walk-through tribute. We really love what they’ve done with the attraction recently, although I think I speak for the entire world when I say it needs MORE FIGMENT! Figment, much like cowbell, is something you can never have too much of.

We were feeling a little sluggish following our large meal, so we decided to watch the movie at One Man’s Dream. We normally skip this, not because we don’t like it, but because it isn’t exactly anything that necessitates a cinematic presentation. It’s the kind of film you could watch on YouTube for the same effect. Now, I don’t know if it’s actually on YouTube, but you get the point.

After the movie, Sarah still wasn’t feeling well. Our original plan was to stay at Disney’s Hollywood Studios until the end of Evening Extra Magic Hours to get some photos before heading over to the Magic Kingdom, but it appeared that might not be happening. I let Sarah and Nick walk ahead while I ran back and grabbed a few snaps of the Tower of Terror. I met back up with them in our room at BoardWalk.

Sarah was already feeling better, so we decided to head to the Magic Kingdom right away. We arrived there just before 10 and the park was closing at 11, so we didn’t have much time for attractions. Buzz Lightyear’s Spaceranger Spin had a short line, so we did that a couple times and the TTA once before heading over to Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion to end the night. From there, we slowly made our way out of the Magic Kingdom, snapping a few photos along the way.
