New Lightsabers Coming to Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has no shortage of places to explore, attraction-worthy details, and cool Easter Eggs. This land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland may only have two rides, but you’ll nonetheless want to spend a ton of time exploring its 14 acres. (Updated May 28, 2022.)

High on the list of places to see is Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. On paper, this is “simply” Star Wars Land’s flagship gift shop. Located right behind Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers and adjacent to Docking Bay 7, it has a fairly prominent location in Galaxy’s Edge.

You’ll definitely pass by Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities while perusing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and it’ll definitely catch your eye given the huge props outside, so it’s not really a “hidden” gem in that sense. However, during our visits to Galaxy’s Edge, we’ve found many guests dismissing it as “just a gift shop” and skipping it entirely. That would be a mistake…

The propensity to gloss over gift shops is actually a larger problem with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and one we’ve encountered both in person within the land and via comments in response to other blog posts about Star Wars Land. That some of these spots are gift shops is actually unfortunate; they are exquisite exhibits, albeit ones that are also monetized.

In fairness, it’s understandable that people would assume shops are merely ways of getting them to part with their money. However, we’d encourage you to ignore the commercial component, and view most of these shops as walk-throughs. Again, Galaxy’s Edge is a lot like Morocco at Epcot, and this includes the retail. “Space Morocco” likewise has a lot to explore even if you’re not interested in purchasing anything.

Hidden inside the Den of Antiquities, you’ll find a rotating collection of unique items that include an eclectic variety of items: jewelry, ancient tools kyber crystals, statues, famous lightsabers, and even walking canes.

To that point, Dok-Ondar will soon be stocking a variety of new merchandise in his Den of Antiquities for Summer 2022. Here’s a look at the new stuff in this merchandise update…

First, let’s take a look at some exciting new Lightsaber hilts coming soon to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. To celebrate the premiere of the new limited-series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” streaming now on Disney+, here’s a first look at the new Obi-Wan Legacy Lightsaber Set.

Finally, fans can vote to let Dok-Ondar know which Lightsaber hilt they’d most like to be offered at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

These Legacy Lightsaber hilts are modeled after the lightsabers of heroic and legendary Jedi from across the galaxy, so make your choice and let us know below who’s hilt you’d most like to see next. Choose between the hilts of Jocasta Nu, Sifo-Dyas, Quinlan Vos, Depa Billaba, Barriss Offee, or Kanan Jarrus.

Now let’s turn our attention to the man(?), the myth, the legend: Dok-Ondar!

If you’ve been following Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at all, you’re probably familiar with Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities as the “store with the Audio Animatronics shopkeeper.” This is true; Dok-Ondar oversees everything happening in the shop from his desk near the cash registers. He checks inventory, takes calls, and barking orders at his assistants, among other things.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name Dok-Ondar, don’t feel bad. The character was first mentioned off-hand in Solo: A Star Wars Story aboard Dryden Vos’s yacht, the First Light. Aside from that throw-away reference, Dok-Ondar’s temperamental personality has been established via the Galaxy’s Edge comics series.

Dok-Ondar is an Ithorian collector who is willing to trade any treasure if the price was right. His name ripples far and wide in the Star Wars universe as the mysterious proprietor of the most notorious antiquities shop in the galaxy.

Every item of Dok-Ondar’s has a story behind it. Per official lore, some of those stories are more dangerous to listen to than others.

The Dok-Ondar Audio Animatronics figure is cool, but I think it overshadows the rest of this superlative shop, the presentation of which is arguably better than the alien shopkeeper.

The den is packed with crates, boxes, and a treasure trove of items collected from around the galaxy. Upon closer inspection, you’ll find many objects with stories to tell.

High overhead, there are all sorts of props the details of which you can barely ascertain. These include armor, droid parts, helmets, and all sorts of other things.

Among Walt Disney World fans, the most noteworthy item on display is a well-hidden Ark of the Covenant. Rumor has it that each version of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge received half of the prop from the Great Movie Ride’s Indiana Jones scene as a nod to that attraction. I have zero idea whether that’s true, but I really want it to be.

Whether it’s a reused Great Movie Ride prop or “only” a nod to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, it’s a cool Easter Egg that fits with the style of the shop.

Here’s hoping that the Disney’s Hollywood Studios version of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities also includes the iconic Baby Sinclair figure that was the guest of honor each year at the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

While I love the hidden Ark of the Covenant, my favorite thing about Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities is the wall of taxidermy.

A couple of these are a bit grotesque (and it’s sad to see the venerable Tauntaun up there); they’re also so realistic that you can’t help but stare.

My other favorite detail is the ceiling and its fascinating light fixtures.

Early concept art made it appear as if there would be a swirling alien creature skeleton, but I guess they opted for this instead. While some suspended fossils would’ve been cool, the taxidermy probably fills the ‘morbidity quotient’ of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

In terms of merchandise, the hot sellers are the wall of Kyber Crystals and Holocrons. I still don’t understand what purpose Holocrons serve, but I know they work with Kyber Crystals.

More importantly, Kyber Crystals can be used to change the blade color of lightsabers built at Savi’s Workshop.

During the haze of excitement after building our lightsaber, we wandered into Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities to check out the Kyber Crystals. At first, I was flat-out elated upon seeing that these are “only” $13.

I planned on buying several colors to show off in our Rancor-tooth lightsaber. That is, until stepping back and realizing this was basically $13 for a fake gem that just unlocks a different color. We didn’t end up buying any, but even giving it more rational thought, I still have to admit that I want a green one.

When we first visited, we played a little game of “what will end up at the Disney Character Warehouse Outlets?!”

The leading contender at that point was a $150 Emperor Palpatine Cane. A few days later, we noticed the supply of these canes was already low! (In general, a bunch of obscure Star Wars merchandise I never expected people would buy has been selling like hotcakes…so what do I know?)

Here are some other items you might find around Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities:

It’ll be interesting to see whether the inventory actually changes out with regularity.

It’d be cool if this ends up being like the Star Wars version of Sid Cahuenga’s One-Of-A-Kind Antiques and Curios Shop.

Ultimately, you will not want to miss Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. It’s an intimate space with a lot to see, which leads to guests lingering…which leads to lines to enter. Don’t let that discourage you from taking the time to step inside and explore this shop. It’s hard to draw parallels with existing things at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, but you could think of this as on par with a solid attraction pre-show. It’s yet another solid offering in Space Morocco!

If you’re planning on visiting the new land, you’ll also want to read our Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Guide. This covers a range of topics from basics about the land and its location, to strategically choosing a hotel for your stay, recommended strategy for the land, and how to beat the crowds. It’s a good primer for this huge addition. As for planning the rest of your trip, we have a comprehensive Disneyland Vacation Planning Guide as well as a thorough Walt Disney World Planning Guide.
