30 Years of Monorails at EPCOT
Our recent trip to Walt Disney World was not all that successful from the perspective of photography, mostly because special events (Tower of Terror 10-miler, D23 Epcot Anniversary Celebration, etc.) that didn’t lend themselves to photography took up large chunks of the trip. However, we still had a lot of fun, and I did manage to grab a few keepers. This is one photo I really like, and one that I was sort of lucky to grab.
I had already missed the beautiful sunset and golden hour just minutes before this, as we opted to avoid a quickly passing storm by eating dinner during the height of sunset. However, as we all stopped to enjoy some beers before heading to find spots for IllumiNations, we noticed a monorail stopped on the beam by Journey into Imagination. Luckily, I already had my 70-200mm lens mounted, so I began firing away. After getting a few shots from this location, I headed for Journey into Imagination to see if I could get any other perspectives of the monorail, but it started moving right as I did. While I was bummed that it didn’t sit around for longer, I am relieved that I got this shot, as this perspective isn’t one I don’t think I’ve seen.
It’s a pretty fitting photo for EPCOT Center’s 30th anniversary, too. With the exception of slight variations in color schemes and foliage, this photo just as easily could have been taken on October 1st, 1982 as 2012. There aren’t many locations in EPCOT where you can accomplish that!
Technical details: shot with a Nikon D600 with a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens. See our guide for more photography equipment recommendations.

Beautiful. With all the hype (and beautiful photos) from EPCOT over the past few weeks, I have realized that I need to head out there sooner, rather than later.
(PS – check your link on the 70-300 lens)
You Disneylanders absolutely need to make it out to Walt Disney World. Most of us WDW people also head out west!
Wow, you weren’t kidding. This is great! You still managed to bring out tons of color.
What cracked me up is that we saw two consecutive monorails stop in that spot on the beam and both times, as soon as you darted for JII, they started moving. Good thing you snapped this before rushing over there the second time! Haha
It was so great to meet you and Sarah during Epcot’s 30th anniversary celebration! I hope you guys had a good trip. Oh, and awesome picture as always!
Great to meet you and hope you had a good trip, as well!
