Toy Story Land Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant Opening Info & Construction Progress
Walt Disney World announced a new table service dining option coming to Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios named Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant. This offers details, construction progress, work permits, and when this WDW eatery will likely open. (Updated December 8, 2022.)
Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant will be themed to a backyard barbecue with Andy and his toys inviting guests to participate in fun. By toys, we do not mean the walk-around variety; Walt Disney World has indicated this will not be a character dining experience. As you can see in the above image, the art style is similar to that of both Toy Story Mania and Slinky Dog Dash.
The premise for Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant is that Andy has cut and taped three cardboard boxes together to create a new rodeo arena using some of his favorite toys, games, and play sets. While some pieces are definitely western-themed, what makes this rodeo special is the broad assortment of toys that have been brought together to create a fun, colorful mashup-atmosphere.
Once inside, you’ll be surrounded by all of the rodeo festivities in-action as well as western town and train station play sets. And you just might spot some of your favorite Pixar characters scattered around the restaurant in the form of toys and game pieces including a toy version of Jessie riding on the back of a Trixie pull-toy and unique toy versions of Bo Peep and her sheep, all who appear to be performing in the rodeo together.
This new dining option will be located to the right of what’s currently the entrance of Toy Story Land, behind the giant Woody figure and land’s marquee (you can see construction walls in the photo below). Previously, this area was home to two backstage production bungalows. These facilities were relocated with a new structure built to house Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant.
December 8, 2022 Update: Walt Disney Imagineering has started working on the exterior facade of the restaurant. We’re starting to see visible signs of this, as the restaurant marquee and other details have been installed of the exterior of the building, which is now behind construction scrims.
Before you get too excited, the ‘process’ of working on the entry courtyard actually began at the end of summer and only now are finishing details starting to appear on the outside of the restaurant. Like everything else about Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, it has been a drawn out process–which is likely by design.
Consequently, it is highly unlikely that Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant will open for Christmas 2022, as previously indicated by Walt Disney World. The announcement that the restaurant was coming this year was made early in the year, and to my knowledge, Walt Disney World has not reiterated that Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant will debut this year since then.
A last minute Christmas or Festivus miracle (for those who celebrate) is always a possibility, but we highly doubt it. Accordingly, we’ve also updated the section below with predicted opening dates for Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant.
Prior to this exterior work beginning, Walt Disney Imagineering filed two new permits for Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. To our recollection, these are the first permits in at least a year, as work has progressed at a snail’s pace on this project.
The first permit is for “Project T – Themed Facades,” which almost certainly refers to the exterior of the building. It doesn’t yet look like a themed playset, unless kids are playing with concrete boxes these days. The contractor on this permit is Brilliant Creative Fabrication, which has worked with Walt Disney World in the past on a range of projects involving everything from “dinosaurs to outer space” and “fairy tales to virtual reality.”
The second permit is for fabrication and installation of set pieces, which likely refers to all of the simulated cardboard cutouts inside and outside the restaurant.
These permits expire in August 2023, giving the contractors and Imagineering another year to finish up this component of the project, in theory. However, that’s the default duration for permit work and unlikely has any bearing on the opening date of Toy Story Land’s Roundup Rodeo BBQ.
When announcing the now-open Jessie’s Trading Post gift shop earlier this year, Walt Disney World provided an update on the restaurant: “Also coming in 2022 to Andy’s backyard is the previously announced Roundup Rodeo BBQ restaurant! In this unique, fun, family-friendly dining experience, guests will enjoy delicious barbecue fare while surrounded by a kaleidoscope of toys, games, and playsets that Andy has brought together to create his one-of-a-kind rodeo.
“Stepping into the lobby and waiting area, guests experience first-hand what it feels like to be one of Andy’s honorary toys, before progressing into two larger dining room spaces where Andy’s rodeo takes place. Here, the rodeo will be in full swing, with western town and train station playsets mixing with surprising, playful details, like some fan-favorite Pixar characters as they’ve never been seen before!”
Again, we no longer believe this is accurate. Walt Disney World has offered next-to-no official updates on Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant in the last 6 months, and it would come out of left field at this point for the restaurant to open before Winter 2023.
You may recall that Walt Disney World first announced the Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant would open in 2020. That announcement was made before the closure of the parks, and even then didn’t have an opening month or season attached to it. Our expectation at the time was thus that it would open close to Christmas 2020.
Then the multi-month closure happened, and all construction was paused. Even after Walt Disney World reopened, it took many major projects several more months to regain momentum. Toy Story Land’s Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant was one such project.
At some point that fall, work resumed on Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant. Walt Disney Imagineering filed several construction permits for the interior with addresses that would match the location, and progress could be observed on the roof of the warehouse that’ll house the restaurant.
Fast-forward to 2022, and the concrete ‘warehouse’ for Toy Story Land’s Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant is finished…and has for at least 18 months. We’ve seen intermittent work on the exterior and construction crews around the project, but it’s impossible to ascertain the location’s actual progress since it’s literally a window-less warehouse. Nothing major has happened in over a year.
Unlike other projects that have been delayed indefinitely or cancelled, Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant will directly generate revenue and addresses a need–a lack of dining capacity at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It has not been and won’t be cancelled.
Like Space 220 Restaurant before it, Walt Disney World has deliberately dragged out the timeline on this project. After a lengthy delay and the project being totally finished for months, Space 220 Restaurant opened at Epcot just before Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary started.
With Space 220 Restaurant, the delay was driven by physical distancing in restaurants last year, which dramatically cut into profitability. Once that was dropped, staffing shortages became an issue. With those problems resolved, Space 220 Restaurant opened and has been booked solid since.
Walt Disney World has taken a similar approach with Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant. The company moved slower on construction because it was simply not advantageous to open the restaurant, and wouldn’t be truly needed in terms of demand and attendance until this year.
While we’ve heard that work still needs to be finished on the inside–and there’s a bit of decorating to be done on the facade of the building–the timeline here is being dragged out by design. Given its wholly unambitious concept, the Toy Story restaurant could be finished in a matter of months (maybe even weeks!) if it were deemed a high priority. However, it is not.
At this point, we’re likely looking at 2023 for the opening of Toy Story Land’s Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, despite Disney’s earlier promise that it would open this year. While late December is still a possibility, the deck is stacked against that timeframe.
There haven’t been any rumors about hiring or transfers, staffing shortages are still persisting for culinary roles, and we haven’t spotted any job postings specific to this location. Unless Disney has already quietly moved Cast Members to Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant–or does so very soon–having the location open this month will be exceedingly difficult.
With that in mind, we could debate when it makes the most sense to open Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant in 2023 from a strategic perspective. In other words, when demand will necessitate it. If this were an attraction (like TRON Lightcycle Run), this would be precisely my line of analysis…and my conclusion would be in time for Presidents’ Day Weekend. From that perspective, it would make sense for Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant to open on February 17, 2023.
However, I do not think that’s the calculus when it comes to restaurants. For one thing, there’s the aforementioned staffing shortage for culinary roles. That may preclude Walt Disney World from opening Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant when they want to open it.
For another thing, Advance Dining Reservation demand is going to be sky-high for Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant no matter when it debuts. It could open during the slowest week of 2023, and it’ll still book up in minutes. Few people are going to book vacations to see Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, so it doesn’t have tremendous marketing value.
In short, my expectation is that Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant will open as soon as it can open. Disney may be deliberately slow-rolling construction, but that’s likely due to the practical realities of staffing this venue once it debuts–not to maximize the marketing impact. As such, speculating about an opening date is a fool’s errand. I could get lucky and guess the correct date, but it’ll be purely by coincidence.
What I will reiterate is that February 17, 2023 is a key date from the perspective of it being when Disney’s Hollywood Studios will absolutely need more dining capacity. That will kick off one of the 5 busiest weeks of the year at Walt Disney World. So if the company can open Toy Story Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant by then, they definitely will. That very well might be the target date at this point, in which case it isn’t a terrible guess.
Beyond that, our first impression of Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant is generally mixed. Three of the primary criticisms of Toy Story Land have been the lack of shade, air-conditioning, and dining options.
While we’ve really enjoyed both the breakfast and lunch/dinner menus at Woody’s Lunch Box, the lack of seating and zero indoor seating definitely put a damper on it. On the plus side, a makeshift gift shop has been added to the exit of Toy Story Mania.
This new table service restaurant should help address all of those issues.
Toy Story Land is currently pretty miserable during the summer heat or daily rain showers. Giving guests even a temporary reprieve from the sun or storms in a place that isn’t the restrooms would be nice.
Otherwise, about my only thought is, “why not have an elaborately themed Pizza Planet?!” and I’m guessing the answer to that is storytelling consistency. My retort to that response would be: “who cares.” Seriously, it’s not like Toy Story Land is the pinnacle of themed design. Beyond that, it would be pretty easy to concoct a storytelling contrivance to explain away the presence of Pizza Planet in “Andy’s Backyard,” if Imagineering truly felt the need.
To the extent that it succeeds, Toy Story Land does so because it’s lighthearted and whimsical fun. Being so beholden to “story” that Imagineering ignores the very obvious, very low-hanging fruit that is Pizza Planet just seems self-defeating. But then again, so did “saving” a little bit of money by not building shade, a gift shop, or more dining capacity in the first place. So what do I know!

I love Disney World! Some of my family’s most precious memories of vacations are of Disney World. And of course, improvements can always be made, but there is not a lot to complain about when you are there and having the time of your life in beautiful, fun surroundings!
For me am okay with everything. Hope they will make few improvements. Thanks for sharing!
My only comment is that if Disney is waiting for social distancing to be relaxed, etc, then this will not open this year at all. Highly doubtful that all of the safety restrictions would be completely changed before 2022. So let’s hope they open this and let us enjoy!
I would like to see the characters visit the tables. Or a show! I would pay more money for the characters to visit. It is incredibly hard to meet buzz and woody there. The lines are too long and the heat is awful to wait in. Also how about more cars attractions!? My kid loves cars and I wish there was a bigger tribute to it in the park.
We love the idea, love the idea and design. Eating in the middle of all the toy story themed room my kids will go crazy. Also I hope to have offered character dining. This would put the final touch on it. We go to disney everyear and we look like changes and Hollywood Studios needed alme changes. Love the idea of the new tou story land and the restaurant to come and also Lightning McQueen. It helps gear towards fhe litte ones because theu arent into the star wars stuff. Great job Disney!!! We love Disney!!!
Whose brilliant idea was this? Toy Story suffers from a lack of seating (for meals) and shade. So, we get a “table” service location. You can anticipate that dining reservations will immediately make this unavailable to those looking for something to eat or a place to cool off. Why couldn’t Disney have pulled their heads out of their respective nether regions and make this a counter-service location with and much seating as possible. Flow rates would probably generate more income on a hourly basis than this botched effort.
Disney really does need a change of leadership! I’m taken aback that they would class this dismal effort a table Service! The concept art is a Joke, and it’s sad they think they can hype up such a meager offering at this price point! Hard Pass and Doomed for failure are my speculation.
Yes, they certainly don’t understand highly-themed, groundbreaking areas…like Galaxy Edge next door 😉 a change of leadership would seem to be a bit extreme to me. It’s just a restaurant, so a touch of perspective is needed I think.
One has to scratch their head as to why this wasn’t in the original design to begin with. It’s as if this was all rushed. We were there over Xmas and did the early morning experience. Got enough of the 3 rides. Saucers was underwhelming to say the least. And even with early morning paid event, the line up to see Woody and Buzz were over 30 minutes. Unacceptable. When we voiced our displeasure CM just looked at us like we were idiots.
Sucks you had to pay extra to get in to ride everything, but at least you did get to ride everything. I was there Monday of Thanksgiving week and the slinky ride line was over 2-3 hours long the entire day until the last hour, but even then, it was over an hour wait. uggh. skipped it this time.
We did have some fun character greetings tho. Buzz was just getting back to his station as we were walking by and I heard someone say ok we’re forming a line here, so I raced over and got toward the front of the line…5th or so. Woody and Jess on the other hand, we did have to wait til later at night to meet them and like you said, 30 minute wait, but it was worth it. My daughter had so much fun meeting all 3 characters.
So happy about this. There were almost two fights when we were trying to get seating at Woodys lunchbox. It wasn’t worth trying and we ended up sitting on the ground. Really not fun because there is not much shade at all.
I hear ya, my wife refused to do lunch at Woodys due to lack of seating. Rather sad as i hyped myself up to eat the bbq sandwich there. Oh well, next time…
Man this is great news! It gives me hope that they aren’t ‘done’ with this land and a play area, (dare I wish splash area???) and more could be possible!
yes ! Why isn’t there a splash/cooling station in this concrete jungle? Come on, Disney, step up ! great idea.
That is an awesome idea!!
I agree with all the previous comments about how great it would be if this was a character meal! My kids would flip! Of course by the time this is built who knows what they will be into.
Based on what Disney Parks Blog writes I don’t think it sounds like a character meal, which is disappointing. Higher prices for table service meals just to look at wall decorations are less appealing IMO.
“Once inside, you’ll be surrounded by all of the rodeo festivities in-action as well as western town and train station play sets. And you just might spot some of your favorite Disney•Pixar characters scattered throughout the restaurant in the form of toys and game pieces including a toy version of Jessie riding on the back of a Trixie pull-toy and unique toy versions of Bo Peep and her sheep, all who appear to be performing in the rodeo together”…
wonder about the opening timeframe? guessing nothing is constructed yet, so probably not until late 2020? would be very cool to offer a character meal here with no shortage of options- woody, jesse, buzz, lotso, army men, bo peep.
I would love a Table Service meal with a character meal especially if characters like Woody, Jessie and Buzz appeared. It would be a nice alternative to all the princess meals, and a chance to get out of the sun during the warmer months.
This! I love my daughter but there are only so many female character meals we can do. I’d like the Toy Story character meal for my son. It’s no wonder he prefers Universal over Disney. Universal Studios caters more to boys with Jurassic Park, Marvel, Transformers and Minions.
I still love Disney, though.
Disney now owns Marvel so there is that.
Yes, they own Marvel but not the rights to have rides or characters without paying Universal BIG BUCKS + permission. Universal can always sell those rights, but it will take a lot of money to make them sell those. There’s limits to that Marvel ownership, especially when it comes to Marvel in Orlando. So, there’s that.
I think this is a great idea! My only other complaint about Toy Story land is that the character meet of Woody, Buzz and Jessie are all outside, uncovered. We were in line for an hour to meet Woody and Jessie with our 5 & 2 year old, praying it wasn’t going to rain (it was in the forecast and everyone was stalking their phones). Cast members said they would go inside if it rained and would return only if it stopped. Long story short….for an area that has daily rain showers, and rain threat, one would think that the main characters of the “land” would be enclosed as to not eliminate the possibility of meeting them in the event of bad weather. Just my two cents for what it’s worth 🙂
i agree. used to be across from the original entrance for TSM when you met woody and buzz. i haven’t seen it yet but sounds like things were not thought through completely for TSL regarding weather.
Definitely excited about this especially if it’s going to character meals! 🙂 There are a ton of princess character meals but not as much for boys besides Mickey and friends.
Yes, all the character meals are either princess or mickey related. As the parks grow more and more away from that, with TSL and Star Wars, itd be great to have character meals in their respective locations to allow for a greater variety. Hopefully Disney hears our cries for more options!
Not all of them. Crystal palace is Winnie the Pooh themed. 1900 park fare breakfast has Pooh, tigger, Mary poppins, Alice & mad hatter. While 1900 park fare dinner has Cinderella & Prince Charming, it also has lady tremaine, drizilla & Anastasia.
Last year, I kept wondering why they didn’t make a huge Bo-Peep with her umbrella offering shade beneath withe some benches… or perhaps a giant box (the kind a toy comes in) offering shade, tables and perhaps some retail items. children particularly need a space for some time-out seating offering shade and a view.
Those are great ideas! Those and a play area would be ideal! Kids need places to run and play.
A surprising number of online commentators have criticized Toy Story Land for not having a recreation of Pizza Planet from the film. Given that these are YouTubers and Podcasters who specialize in Disney, it’s shocking that so many of them have overlooked the obvious fact that Pizza Planet is a restaurant for HUMANS, and building it on a land where everything is on the scale of toys would be a glaring disregard for theming.
This restaurant’s concept art makes way more sense. It looks like Andy has assembled his toys to look like they’re having a barbecue.
This is true. But just because they shouldn’t build a full-scale Pizza Planet in Toy Story Land doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be built *somewhere*! If they were to really do it right, it would likely be too big and elaborate for most available spots within the theme parks themselves. However, this would have been a really interesting project for Disney Springs — certainly much more thematically appropriate than the NBA Experience, as just one example. And there’s already one “planet” themed restaurant at Disney Springs that could probably stand to be replaced….
but didn’t HS already have a pizza planet everyone hated?
Others are far more informed/opinionated than me, but from my understanding there have been several previous iterations of restaurants with the words “Pizza Planet” in their name at various parks (Disneyland, DHS, Paris, etc.) but none have been more than a half-hearted attempt at theming and food quality. (Though to be fair, the actual pizza consumed by Andy & family within the Pizza Planet of the Toy Story films would likely have been terrible if it was anything like what’s served at massive video gaming / pizza joints in real life….)
Probably too crowded by the pixar offerings in magic kingdom, but pizza planet could fit in over there. I like tbe bbq idea in andys backyard tho. Perfect!
Any speculation on whether this will be character dining? It made me think of the Woody’s Round Up BBQ that will be at the Contemporary around July 4th (which includes characters). I bet it will be insanely popular if it includes characters. Otherwise, the atmosphere doesn’t necessarily seem consistent with higher priced table service prices.
This is super exciting! When I visited Toy Story Land, I was disappointed in the menu options and lack of seating at Andy’s Lunch Box.
Personally, I’d rather see more SHADE in Toy Story Land. We were there inSeptember last year and it was “BRUTAL” with the sun beating down. Another restaurant I guess won’t hurt with the expected upcoming crowds.
