Saratoga Springs Resort Review
Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is a DVC deluxe villa hotel at Walt Disney World. In this review, we’ll share room photos, dining & amenities info, how Saratoga Springs Resort (SSR) stacks up to other Disney Vacation Club accommodations, and whether we recommend staying here. (Updated June 5, 2022.)
We’ll start with several updates. First, the good news. Walt Disney World has finished the guest room and building component of the multi-year enhancement project at Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. This means that every single room at the resort is now new and has a number of functional and aesthetic improvements. We’ve stayed in these overhauled accommodations at SSR, and share the experience in our Photos & Video: New Rooms at Saratoga Springs Resort post.
Along with the new rooms, a number of upgrades have been made around Saratoga Springs Resort in the last couple of years. The lobby was renovated and modernized, with seating added in this area and elsewhere in the main building. In addition to that, the Paddock pool and its slide were refurbishment. More of that is on the horizon…
Beginning October 3, 2022 and continuing through mid-December, the Congress Park leisure pool and the Treehouse Villa pools will be closed for refurbishment. During this time, the High Rock Spring Pool, Grandstand Pool and Paddock Pool will remain open during usual operating hours. Shuttle transportation between the Treehouse Villas and the High Rock Springs Pool will be available from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.
Following that from early January 2023 through late-March 2023, High Rock Spring Pool and On the Rocks Pool Bar will be closed while the pool undergoes refurbishment. The Grandstand Pool, The Paddock Pool, and Congress Park Pool will remain open.
Those are the only closures on the horizon at Saratoga Springs Resort. Here’s hoping those projects give the property more personality and character, as has been the case with several recent refurbishments at SSR. Unlike many Walt Disney World resorts that have had their themed design and details diluted over time, Saratoga Springs has aged like a fine wine–getting less generic and more charming over time.
To that point, we feel like a “reassessment” of Saratoga Springs Resort is in order. In the past, SSR was pretty far from our favorite Disney Vacation Club property, despite it being our home resort.
We discuss the reasons for that later in this post, but our view on it has changed for the foreseeable future. Suffice to say, Saratoga Springs stock is rising! Here’s why…
First, the new rooms are really nice–an unequivocal upgrade over the drab and dated styles they replaced. While they’re not the pinnacle of themed design, neither were the previous rooms.
These are stylistically and thematically superior to the old rooms, sporting functional improvements and smart design choices. There’s also no shortage of fun Disney details, including vibrant character art and other clever touches that make SSR’s rooms “distinctly Disney.”
Speaking of Disney Springs, having that within walking distance is another huge reason that Saratoga Springs Resort’s stock is on the rise. In general, we’re big fans of the dining scene at Disney Springs–as locals, we eat a lot of meals there, and think the quality and value proposition is generally superior to many/most in-park restaurants.
In the past, guests on vacation have understandably been less inclined to leave the parks to do lunch or dinner at Disney Springs, instead only opting to dine there on their non-park day–if at all. However, there are plenty of times when the parks close several hours before Disney Springs, and it can be nice to do a late dinner or evening nightcap after a day in the parks.
Basically, that’s our “sales pitch” for Saratoga Springs Resort for those who have stayed or visited in the past and written it off for whatever reason. It’s still not our favorite resort, but it’s a better-than-expected option.
With that out of the way, here’s everything else you should know about Saratoga Springs Resort…
Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is themed to an idealized version area of upstate New York that is known for horse racing. The theme has been derided by some as being bland, but it’s also fairly accurate; the resort is surrounded by golf courses, winding waterways, and features cookie-cutter buildings all in an inviting pastel color palette. It’s like the perfectly planned community.
Depending upon your perspective, this theming could be the perfect vacation resort for you, or it could feel like a experiment in city planning taken too far. If you’ve read our Disney Vacation Club Resort Rankings and have seen that we placed Saratoga Springs Resort dead last, you might assume that our take is the latter. It’s not.
We’re actually somewhere in the middle. We agree with the criticism of Saratoga Springs Resort’s theme–it’s very generic, and feels to us like a nice timeshare resort that you might find anywhere. The equestrian layer seems tacked on as a random layer of artifice.
It feels like Disney was trying to cast a wide net with Saratoga Springs Resort’s theming so it wasn’t really off-putting to anyone, which might very well be the case since it was the largest DVC property to date when built. In the process, though, they arguably made it a bit too bland.
On the plus side, it’s more of a buyer’s market on Saratoga Springs Resort DVC points than on any other resort. As you can read in our Ultimate Disney Vacation Club Buying Guide (which we highly recommend consulting before taking the DVC plunge), Saratoga Springs is our home resort and the DVC resort we recommend buying via the resale market.
My problem is that the light layer of horse racing flourishes could be removed and replaced with some other random thing, say competitive canine frisbee, and the resort could easily be set in the quiet community of La Mirada, California (famous for its many canine frisbee World Championships), or really, Anywhere, USA.
Yes, Saratoga Springs Resort bears resemblance to Saratoga Springs, New York, but it’s such a generic look that it’s likely to bear resemblance to any number of real world places. Because of this, I feel it lacks the type of theming that Disney hotels should possess.
Sarah isn’t nearly as hard on it, finding the decor tasteful and modern. I recognize that those who are not looking for a transportive theme are likely to love Saratoga Springs. Once you get past the horse racing thing, there’s little pretense. It simply looks and feels like a nice, sprawling timeshare.
Those who are used to vacation clubs elsewhere that don’t have extensive theming and backstory may like this, as after a long day of the “Disney experience” in the theme parks, they may be looking for an escape from that in their hotel.
Once you get past the theming (or if you’re a fan of it to begin with), there’s actually a lot to like about Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.
The rooms are modern and clean. The building exteriors are pretty and colorful. Although the layout is sprawling, parking is very convenient and close to guest rooms. The pools are all nice–even the quiet pools. There’s a spa on site, and plenty of other amenities.
As far as rooms go, perhaps it’s due to the understated theming, but we’ve found Saratoga Springs Resort’s rooms to be solid. They’re not quite as large as Old Key West’s rooms, but they are laid out better, which leads to them having just about as much functional space as an Old Key West room.
Beyond that, the rooms are nice. The colors and designs work well, and the touches of theme aren’t over the top or garish.
Saratoga’s rooms aren’t exactly for me (I prefer something more “thematically rich”), but if all you’re concerned with is having a room that’s nice, Saratoga Springs Resort should not be penalized.
The rooms definitely fit the bill in that regard, and we think the quality improves once you move up into the 1-bedroom and larger units. Here’s a video tour of the new rooms at Saratoga Springs so you can better visualize the look and layout:
Another plus about Saratoga Springs Resort is that it’s one of the easier Disney Vacation Club resorts to book. Due to its size and lack of popularity, there is almost always availability at Saratoga Springs Resort only a month or so in advance when using Disney Vacation Club points.
This also makes it easy for those renting Disney Vacation Club points to book a stay at Saratoga Springs, making this Deluxe Villa Resort cost about as much as a Moderate Resort booked directly through Disney. When comparing it to a Moderate, Saratoga Springs Resort does pretty well.
As far as dining goes, Saratoga Springs has a table service restaurant, the Turf Club Bar and Grill, and a counter service restaurant/grocery market, Artist’s Palette. We love Artist’s Palette, and consider it to be one of Walt Disney World’s hidden gems of counter service dining (despite the bland decor).
Saratoga Springs Resort is also conveniently located to Disney Springs, and there’s a walkway and boat service to it. For us, this used to be a huge plus, as we used to request a room in Congress Park (the area closest to the Disney Springs walkway) and stumble home from Pleasure Island after spending some time at the Adventurers Club…or waddled home from Earl of Sandwich.
Saratoga Springs has once again become a big draw with Disney Springs having come into its own, and restaurants like The Boathouse and Morimoto Asia, which are among our favorite restaurants at Walt Disney World. (See our Disney Springs Table Service Restaurant Rankings for more recommendations.)
Then there’s the nightlife, which is highlighted by the Edison, which is one of our favorite bars at Walt Disney World, and Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, which is a fun and well-themed location. All of this gives Saratoga Springs a lot more appeal. As work continues and more is added to Disney Springs, this should only increase in the coming months.
The pools are a strength of Saratoga Springs Resort that don’t seem to get a ton of credit, but this is one place that the resort really excels. No, they are not as awesome as the pool at the Beach Club, but with the rock-work and gurgling play area of High Rock Spring Pool, it’s a well done and fun pool.
The quiet pools each are well-themed and pretty well done, too. The Paddock also recently got a new pool (that Disney has dubbed a “feature” pool) that is among the best secondary pools at Walt Disney World.
Besides the theming, the downsides to Saratoga Springs Resort are very similar to the downsides of Old Key West Resort. It is very large, meaning long walks from most guest rooms to the main building and pool.
There’s also internal transportation that does add a bit of time to the commute time. Despite this, in our experience transportation at Saratoga Springs has been shockingly efficient over the years.
Overall, Saratoga Springs Resort is once again improving its position in terms of our preferred DVC resorts, thanks in large part to Disney Springs, but it’s still not tops for us. It’s a place we stay when there’s no availability at any other Disney Vacation Club resort and that’s about it. I feel like Saratoga Springs is a resort I could stay anywhere in the world, and I’d rather be immersed in theming at Walt Disney World.
If you remove theme from the equation (as some people might want to do), it stacks up very favorably to other resorts at Walt Disney World. It’s likely to be a top pick for adults taking a Walt Disney World vacation solely for the sake of their kids, but want a reprieve from the “magic” when returning from the parks. Conversely, Saratoga Springs is also a good option for an adults-only or honeymoon trip if you want easy access to the exceptional dining at Disney Springs.

Your Thoughts
Are you a fan of Saratoga Springs Resort…are we ‘missing’ something about its allure? Do you agree that it lacks the charm and theme of most other Walt Disney World resort-hotels? Do you think the appeal of Saratoga Springs has improved since Disney Springs added many top-notch dining options? Any questions about SSR? Share your thoughts in the comments!
We just got back from a stay at Saratoga Springs and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. We were on a 7 day cruise on the Fantasy that was derailed by hurricane Irma. We were brought back to Orlando early and our flight out Saturday was cancelled, so we spent 5 days at Saratoga Springs in a 2 bedroom suite (including “surviving” a hurricane). The accommodations were great (and the washer and dryer were much appreciated since our trip was extended by 5 days). I also thought the pools were very nice and they took great care of us during our two days of lockdown (everything was closed for the hurricane and we were on curfew from Sunday night through Monday morning). Also, those are some stout rooms. The hurricane did manage to uproot some small trees, but we could barely hear the wind in our room. Also, we stayed at Old Key West a couple of years ago and I hated the multiple bus stops to get out of the resort. I did not find the size of the resort to be as much of a factor at Saratoga Springs. The multiple bus stops didn’t seem to be nearly as much trouble as they were at Old Key West.
One of the benefits of Sagartoa Springs is the 3 bedroom Grand Villa’s. They are expensive, yes, but if you have a large family and you don’t want to stay off Disney Property or buy two hotel rooms, Sagorta Springs is pretty much your only option.
(Especially if you want everybody to have their own bed)
Butt ugly olive plaid carpet.
Defiantly been my least favorite of all my stats. There’s not much to do at the resort and we were placed in the last room on the top floor of Carrousel building which is the furthest away from everything. If I start walking from La Nouba it’s a 1.7 mile walk back to the room. I clocked it. Even the main building is .4 miles away. The pool was fine as they always are but I can honestly say I won’t ever stay here again. My home resort is Old Key West which is fine but my favs are Bay Lake and Boardwalk. So much to do and I easy to acccess parks and other resorts from there. We haven’t even seen another soul in our building in 4 days. Not even cars in our lot. Why put us so far and we requested to be close to Disney Springs and somehow we were the furthest away. I give it two out of five stars. Mainly because of the lack of amentities and things to do at the resort and the walking distance.
Thinking about doing dec 26th-jan 1st via Costco travel… flights and stay and park tickets (5 day tickets ) is about 15k for all 5 of us. ..
Are the pools heated? Might be thinking DVC after this
We went with DVC only 3 years ago. We first had a very poor intro to it about 10 years ago and decided against it. Boy are we sorry now. We are very glad we are part of the DVC Family now and really wish we joined at that time 10 years ago. We would have saved even more than we do now. We met a couple in Aulani that did purchase at that time 10 years prior and pay half the price we do. So don’t think about it too long before you decide. Look for the deals if you becomee a DVC member.
15k that’s crazy ! Try renting DVC
What is a review of Port Orleans French Quarter doing on the Saratoga Springs Resort page??? That’s a fair question, so I will tell you. After many wonderful vacations (the past few years) spent at SSR by renting DVC points, we were locked out this year due to late planning. So at the last minute I picked POFQ due to its compact size, easy transportation, centralized location to the parks we would be visiting and boat transportation to Disney Springs. For our trip in early May, the cost at both resorts were very similar, so this would give me a good opportunity to do a comparison. While POFQ certainly has its charms and advantages, I would choose SSR in a heartbeat. With costs being the same, it came down to SSR having bigger rooms, a kitchenette w/ microwave, nicer pool / slide and not having that “hotel-ish” vibe that POFQ has. I never got that sense of Welcome Home like I get when I walk through the SSR lobby.
We are very fortunate that we get to do an annual Disney trip, but I save and make sacrifices all year for it, so I try to get the best value for my money. Don’t get me wrong.
POFQ was very nice and my family had a wonderful time. But if the same money will get me a DVC villa, I will choose Saratoga Springs every time.
We have stayed at many Disney Resorts including The Beach Club. We prefer Saratoga Springs. Disney Springs is fantastic and just a short walk. The pools are great, maybe not as great as The Beach Club, but has more choice. We stay at Congress Park and there is nothing like seeing the Disney Springs Balloon every morning. We stay in the Vacation Club Villas and they are exactly the same are the Beech Club. Going back this summer
I am having a blast here! The employees have been a great help especially Anne Marie Dorcin – she went out of her way for me, and was super kind!
Going in September first time at this Resort, stayed as the other multiple times. Any advice on location at the Resort. Plan on 1 day of Golf , 1 day at a Park relax , Disney Springs and relaxing. Purchased leftover points from a person on DVC.
Just finished our fourth consecutive Disney trip at Saratoga Springs. I will admit, it would be nice to experience the Boardwalk Villas, Wilderness lodge or maybe Bay Lake Tower, but I can’t help wonder what we would do in the evening on shorter days. During our six nights at SSR, we spent 4-5 nights at Disney Springs, taking in the ambiance, sights, sounds and tastes. If I remember correctly, the only night we weren’t there was our MK day. Being so close, either a ten minute walk or five minute boat ride, it was all to easy to take a short trip to Disney Springs and walk around for an hour or two, or even a half day when it rained. SSR has all the amenities that we need. I’m sure the other resorts are equally nice, or nicer, depending on who you talk to. But for my family, the proximity of Disney Springs is what keeps us coming back, year after year.
Jim, We’re thinking about staying at the Congress Park area of SSR, but are concerned that there will be a lot of noise from Disney Springs. Can you tell me if Disney Springs has fireworks at night? Thanks for the info.
SSR is our home resort. We unfortunately after requesting our family members be as close as possible to each other we ended up in a three block plus radius . Not even in the same section. Extremely disappointed. Our room faces the springs and is very very musty. If you have any allergies stay away from rooms 2434 and 2436. We have a two bedroom lock off and it’s the same in both rooms. This is the first year in twelve years that this is not currently my happy place
As long time DVC members we have spent time at all resorts. We now have 2 grown children that love to join us at Disney. Staying at SSR allows us to book 3 studios( less points spent vs other resorts)so everyone has their own space.
Boardwalk is our home resort and our favorite, but SSR fits our family needs at this stage. Our adult kids love being close to Disney Springs. I also want to add that SSR has a great activities at the big pool. Love their community center with craft activities, boardgames to play, shuffleboard, tennis, movies to rent as well as campfires, movies outside and surveys to rent. LOTS to do in the evening for DVC members. I also love the SPA on my day off from parks.
Hello,
We have recently stayed at Saratoga Springs. It was our first time staying on Disney property and we loved it. We stayed in a 1 bedroom villa and we were pleased. No it is not really a nice theme I agree. But the room was clean and roomy and really had nice decor. It felt like home and was comfortable for our party of 5. My kids loved it too! The best reason we like to stay there is you can walk to Disney springs. Our building was the closest to the walkway and our view at night was Disney Springs all light up. It was a beautiful view. The service and staff are great too. Although the food was delicious they were out of coffee almost every time i tried to get it from the quick service restaurant at night only . They always had coffee in the morning. I just like to get a cup before heading out for a late night parade or show. That is the only minor and I mean minor complaint I had. We were able to trade our timeshare points to stay on property and enjoy all of the wonderful perks like extra magic hours and early fast pass booking. Our family including my 5, 3, and 15 month old enjoyed this resort and hope to go back this year again.
I have an idea! They should design some gigantic lighted balloons and attach one bunch to the top of each building and make it look like and up themed resort. Minor changes and it would look amazing at night! I also think they should build a frozen ice castle themed hotel too! What about a Good Dinosaur themed hotel. They could have life size dinosaur models around the resort! I can’t wait to see whatever they come up with next!
Tom, although our home resort is BLT, we often stay at Saratoga Springs because unlike BLT, we can book only a month out and still get a 2BR Villa. I generally agree with all your good points and add the following. My wife and I travel with our adult children, and the spacious accommodations easily handle all eight or nine of us. Several of us play golf, and the on-site LBV course is arguably the best at Disney, with free transportation and club transfer to the Palm and Magnolia courses. The workout room and spa are also top-notch, second only to those of the new Four Seasons hotel. The Springs and Paddock pools are playful. Finally, despite the lack of really good dining options at Saratoga, it’s only a short walk or boat ride to Downtown Disney, which has plenty of fine dining, especially the new Boathouse restaurant.
Keep up the good work Tom.
I have to agree w/ pretty much all of your takes. We last stayed there because there were no other DVC properties (on our desired list) available. We were unfortunate enough to be as far from the lobby as possible. I’ll add these comments. The walk to the lobby is very far (already stated) but there was no easy walkway to the lobby. We had to walk alongside the road w/ no walkway adjacent to the golf course. The grass is thick and uneven making the trek undesirable. The doors are outside. I liken this property to a motel rather than a hotel. But the author is correct in that parking is right outside of your room (even late at night) and that the rooms themselves are roomy and nice. Even making this year’s room selections, for the busiest times, Saratoga always has rooms available to book.
Hi, Tom! I have been scouring your site as I plan my family’s first trip to WDW in Sept. 2015. You and your wife are adorable, and I love your wry take on things. I have a similar sensibility, so I feel like I can trust you 😉
My question: My husband and I are traveling with our daughters, 7 and 4 (and the in-laws, who are great). We are booked at Port Orleans Riverside in a garden view room. We were hoping to take advantage of a room discount, but all the moderate room discounts went in 15 minutes flat and none included garden view rooms at POR (as reported by my Magical Destinations agent). I can book a deluxe studio at Saratoga for a little less money than we are paying for full price garden view in POR. I don’t know what to do. Any advice? I think the grown ups will like Saratoga better and the kids will like POR and I want the kids to be happy. But am I passing up a great deal on a deluxe resort? It’s farther away from the parks than POR and we have no interest in Downtown Disney. Stick with POR??
Appreciate any advice! Thanks!
PS,This is our first family trip of this magnitude ever. Kids have never been on a plane and are going to lose their minds when we tell them we are going to Disney. This is my and my husband’s first real vacation since our honeymoon 9 years ago. We are so excited!
I think too much emphasize is placed on strength of theme when considering whether or not children will be happy with a resort. Next week will be my family’s third consecutive year at Saratoga Springs and my girls (8 and 6) love the resort! The love the pool and slide, they love Artist’s Palette, they love taking the boat to Downtown Disney. Transportation to the parks has never been a problem. The staff is superb. Bright colors and super fun theme might be great when first coming to a resort (great for the Ahhhh! factor), but that soon wears off. What do you have left? All resorts have pools, shops, places to eat… Take away the vibrant colors and characters, they all pretty much are the same. And considering we spend the majority of our time at the parks, theme is not high on our list.
Saratoga Springs gets a bad rap, and undeservedly so in my opinion, but when comparing a “B+” resort to an “A” resort, I’m pretty sure you will have a great time at either.
Once caveat to my report… We have ONLY stayed at SSR, no other places, for various reasons. Each vacation has been better than the last. But we have never walked away from a vacation thinking “boy, we really need to try someplace else”.
I honestly think you should stick with POR. Whether or not it’s a moderate resort or deluxe I have two rooms currently at SSR that are extremely musty and for a ten day trip I’m a very disappointed member.

My family and I are going to WDW and staying at Saratoga this summer and decided last minute to rent a car. Does anyone have any experience with driving to the parks from Saratoga? Are some parks more “driving friendly” than others? Should we drive at all? Should we just stick to the Disney transportation system? Are there any resources that I can get my hands on, on short notice that would familiarize me with the Disney by-ways, highways and roads? Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks so much!
Mike
The Disney transportation system is awesome !!! It’s not worth taking a car out. The other is Uber which is a very inexpensive and safe alternative.
I am looking to book here next year for our family of 6. The theming does not do it for me, but because of UK free dining and a discount on the resort it makes it affordable for us. In 2012 we stayed at OKW, we did like it, our 6 year old goes on and on about OKW, but we felt it lacked especially in the counter service department. The theming to OKW is much nicer than Saratoga, but I think the facilities may be more of a benefit to us. The pools look more fun and there seems to be more than one main pool, I may be wrong.
I am a Disney freak, and proud of it, but at this point needs must and we must look at costings and at this point the costings here make it affordable, the biggest plus for me is that I am within Disney even if it is not in your face themed Disney, I will still be getting the Disney service.
thanks
My family and I stayed in a 2 bedroom villa at Saratoga Springs in June of 2013 and it was absolutely perfect! We do not think we could have stayed in a better room. My parents had their own room and my sister and I had our own room with 2 queen beds. The bathroom in our room had a double sink which was such a necessity when it comes to two girls, 17 and 24, trying to get ready in the morning. We were able to make our own breakfast in the morning or store our leftovers from dinner at night with the kitchen in the living room. The washer and dryer was nice to have, even if you don’t necessarily want to be doing laundry on vacation. It was raining the majority of our stay and it was nice to throw our socks and stuff in to dry off before we headed back out. The room was so quiet. We never heard as much as a peep from outside our room. We were convinced we were the only ones staying in our general vicinity. The proximity to Downtown Disney was wonderful. Much of the food choices are better in Downtown Disney than in the parks and it is nice to have a nice meal, like at Fulton’s Crab House. And the market they have in the main house of Saratoga is nice for a late night Mickey Premium Bar. We never had trouble getting around to the parks and it was a very central location. My family agrees that the room was one of the best parts of our visit and we will not hesitate to book there next time we go. When you arrive back to Saratoga at the end of the day there is someone to greet you with “Welcome Home” and it surely felt like home.
What part of the park did you stay in? How far a walk to DTD? How was the bus situation? We are looking to stat here in November with four small children. I’m worried about the buses.
Saratoga Springs is located just a short walk away from Downtown Disney. The path behind the resort (lighted at night) leads you right to the entrance of Downtown Disney. It took maybe 10 minutes at the most. We found this a big help as we liked the food offerings in Downtown Disney much more than in the parks. The bus system was very efficient. There were a couple instances where you had to wait a little longer than you wanted for a bus, but it was never a ridiculous amount of time. The bus stop was just 30 feet from our room. It was very easy to walk to in the morning and a very short walk home at the end of the day. The buses are going to be a big part of your trip and they shouldn’t be something you are worried about. The bus drivers are always nice and friendly. There is plenty of room for each member of your group. When a bus approaches, check the destination listed in lights at the top of the bus. If this is your desired stop, hop on. If not, you wait until you find the one going to wherever you want. There are places to sit at the bus stop so you’re children can sit while you wait watching for your bus. At the end of the day, the buses always announce what hotel they are stopping at so you will never miss your stop. I don’t think you have anything to worry about staying at Saratoga Springs.
We are staying at Saratoga Springs for the first time this June. We have stayed at many of the resorts but this our first deluxe resort. What area of the resort should we request to be by? Are there particular names to the buildings. We are staying in a studio.
