Tokyo Disney Resort Trip Report
Our Tokyo Disney Resort Trip Report covers our first visit to Tokyo Disney Resort–consisting of Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, and a variety of hotels and shopping–just outside of the city of Tokyo, Japan. We visited during the first weeks of Tokyo Disney Resort’s 30th Anniversary, called “The Happiness Year.”
This report will include hundreds of photos of these two breathtaking theme parks, including Mysterious Island, Tokyo’s Tower of Terror, Cape Cod, Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, Monster’s Inc. Ride and Go Seek, the grand opening of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, and much more! We will also have rare sunrise and nighttime photos from Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, plus photos of details and other parts of these beautiful parks that are not often seen on websites written in English.
We feel that the two Tokyo Disney Resort parks are the nicest Disney theme parks in the world, and places every Disney fan should visit once in their lifetime. We think you’ll agree with us once you read and see this trip report!
Prepare for plenty of tangents, corny jokes, and our general travel trips for visiting Japan. In addition to this trip report, stay tuned for a series of overview/trip planning articles concerning Tokyo Disney Resort.

Good luck for the next!
Although I’ve been to bot Tokyo Disneyland and Disney sea, I am going again this July (Both Parks) and I will be trying out your strategy. Going to Disney sea the day the new show opens since Table is waiting closed:(
Hi! I’m planning a trip in 2018 for both Parks. I’m tossing between mid January or early March. We would like to ski in March as it’s less busy but I’m not sure about crowd levels in March at Disney. Which week in March is the least crowded?
Thanks so much!
School finishes in Japan for 1 or 2 weeks at Japan during march so its going to be busy.
Dear Tom
I am very pleased to read your interesting journey. well done!
I am planning to visit both Disneyland and Disney Sea this coming july. We will spend two days in both parks. we are planning to have one day trip in tokyo or mount Fuji trip. However, we have no idea what would be the best option. do you think that by opting for a guided tour, i.e aviator would be the best for us? Thanks !
Hi, l’m planning to make a trip to tokyo disneyland and tokyo disney sea in January 2017. May I know when is the best time to go (light crowds)? The week after their new year week, 9-13 January or 16-20 January? Thank you 🙂
In my experience i would say late January but its too late now
I just found your trip report and I loved it. We are planning a summer 2016 trip to Tokyo Disney Resort. We would like to stay at the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel on-site, but I have some questions that I can’t seem to find the answers to.
1. I know that reservations open day by day at the 6-month mark for the Disney on-site hotels in Tokyo. I was online today (5/28) and found only spotty availability for the Disneyland Hotel exactly 6 months from today (11/28) for a 5-night stay. Do the hotel rooms sell out that fast or is the online booking not indicative of what is actually available?
2. Is 5 nights the most you can stay at a Disney hotel? That was the maximum number of nights shown in the drop down box on the website.
3. Can you book your length of stay on the day your booking window opens?
Thank you for your trip report – we can wait to go!
Hello from Tokyo! I’m Japanese and I’ve grown up visiting Tokyo Disney Resort, but Disney Sea was “the less fun of the two” for me until this trip report opened my eyes to all the things I’d never really appreciated. You and Sarah inspired me to visit twice in the last year, and noticing the careful theming and meticulous details (and taking my camera!) doubly enhanced the experience. Thank you for all the time and effort that go into your fantastic trip reports!
I currently live in Japan and have been to Disney Sea about 4 times and Tokyo Disney Land once. Despite this, I was completely unaware of the secret winery on the Mysterious Island. I’m taking my mom to Disney Sea when she visits me in December, so we will definitely be hitting that up! After reading many of your other reports, I wonder whether or not I will be disappointed to visit parks other than the Tokyo ones. They really are excellent.
Disney by the Sea is out of this world!! What I liked best were the shows and parades, most rides are different from the ones un the US, they are awesome, the staff is si nice, food prices are similar but the admission is cheaper, you get to the resort by subway, which is very convenient. I strongly recommend tokyo Disney!!
Hello.I am a Japanese high school student.
I love disney.
Your pictures are so beautiful!!!
I wanna take a picture like you.
I have a little question.
You took a pictures before opening of a park
didn’t you?
Greetings from the United States! 🙂
Yes, many of the photos here were taken before park opening or after park closing.
My fiancee and I are beginning to plan our Tokyo Disney Sea wedding. Did you ever publish your Tokyo trip planning guide? I don’t see it
That’s been delayed until late this year or early 2014. You’ll understand why soon. 🙂
Thanks for the quick reply! Looking forward to whatever news you may have!
you’ll understand why soon…. does that mean baby bricker??? yes please!
btw….lovvvvvve your trip reports/dining reviews/etc.
This site has been a top resource for me for quite a while now. Thank you so very much!
I have always considered myself somewhat of a Disney addict until I started reading your and Sarah’s blog. You two blow me away with your passion about “most” things Disney. I had never even remotely thought of going to Japan, now after reading this and seeing your absolutely amazing photos, I am in the very early stages of planning our trip, so from the bottom of my heart, Thank You
P.S. I have also purchased Understanding Exposure and have told my husband the only gift I want for Christmas is the Sony RX100!!
Glad you included the “most” things Disney and didn’t put all things Disney. There are quite a few things we don’t like (namely, Captain EO and Downtown Disney!).
Good luck on your endeavors in photography. The Sony RX100 is a GREAT camera, and maybe during the holidays there will be some special deals on it!
What camera did you use on this trip? What are your thoughts on bringing a dslr to Disneyland + DisneySea if you’re planning on going on all the ‘thrill’ rides and rollercoasters? Do you think a Point and Shoot/iPhone 5 will be enough, or would you regret it?
I used a D600, and I did every thrill ride with that camera. I would be very disappointed with just iPhone 5 photos from the trip, but photos are really important to me.
Did you just leave your camera on the between your feet on the rollercoasters? Also about how much money did you end up spending on snacks? Your photos make everything look irresistible, I think I’ll be compelled to try everything!
So when are you going to Hong Kong or are you going to wait till the Shanghai Disneyland is done?
Hello, fellow Disneyphiles. It’s nice to see there are grown people as obsessed as me over Disney parks. And I must say how jealous I am of all your visits. I’ve been to DL, WDW, and DLP, and am planning for DTS next year, so thanks for all the excellent tips.
I too had my honeymoon at Disney (Port Orleans Resort in ’93) and I have to say the best is yet to come. Experiencing Disney with your future spawn will be a ‘whole new world’ as A and J would say.
Keep the trip reports coming, and thanks for sharing.
I’m really loving your TR because I leave for Japan in 10 days! Seriously, every girl wants to know….how great is the merchandise?! I’m going to need an extra suitcase aren’t I??
Once you get to that installment, I think you’re in for a bit of disappointment…
Any sign at all of Godzilla at Tokyo Disney?
Woo! Really looking forward to this – not only for your pictures and hearing more about the resort in general, but my husband is hesitant to plan a trip to TDR because of the language/cultural barriers, so I’m hoping that you TR/planning blog posts will help him realize it’s not quite as daunting as it seems.
Well, the posts should do exactly that. None of us knew any Japanese (beyond a few token words) going in, and we never had any issues. Despite there being very few westerners there, it’s a great place to expose yourself to international travel–the people are great.
