Animal Kingdom Takes Over Extra Evening Hours Until 2027 Following Inconsistent Fall Schedule

Since the evening extra hours moved away from Magic Kingdom for the year, Walt Disney World’s schedule for Extended Evening Hours has been all over the place. It would appear that inconsistency is ending, as the perk appears to be returning to Animal Kingdom for the remainder of 2026. This covers dates & details, plus why ExEH at DAK is actually good going forward.

As basic background, Extended Evening Hours (ExEH) is the nighttime counterpart to Early Entry. There are several differences, most notably that guests staying at Value or Moderate Resorts are not eligible for Extended Evening Hours. But it’s not just the most expensive resorts–you can save money by renting DVC points or staying at the Swolphin and still be eligible if you want to hack ExEH.

Extended Evening Theme Park Hours has two types of resort eligibility, occurs two nights per week, is at two parks, and runs for two hours. When it comes to the latest updates, let’s start with the good news. Magic Kingdom is hosting Extended Evening Hours on September 9, 2026. The bad news is that, after September 9th, it is a near certainty that Magic Kingdom won’t host Extended Evening Hours again this year.

The calendar doesn’t reflect any dates past November 4, 2026, which is when Animal Kingdom takes over Wednesday hosting duties for what’s likely the entire holiday season. The extra hours almost certainly will not return to Magic Kingdom again until January 2027. Between now and then, the perk alternates between Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

Other tangentially related bad news is that park hours have received far fewer extensions for late August and early-to-mid September than previous weeks and months. There are only a few 8 am openings and/or 11 pm closings at Magic Kingdom over the next couple of weeks, and extensions at Animal Kingdom or Disney’s Hollywood Studios are likewise uncommon.

Here’s a rundown on all of the upcoming changes to Extended Evening Hours in Fall 2026…

Party Season Schedule Shift

Magic Kingdom does not host ExEH going forward due to Party Season. In each of the past several years, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom have taken over hosting duties once Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party kicks into high gear, which is followed almost immediately by Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

Magic Kingdom is closing early multiple nights per week, and Disney needs to move ExEH to another park to help redistribute crowds and have the latitude to extend Magic Kingdom’s closing time for regular park guests.

Normally, Extended Evening Hours moves to Disney’s Hollywood Studios if Magic Kingdom has scheduling conflicts. Animal Kingdom is typically the backup to DHS, taking over if that park is hosting parties.

That usually happens in November and December with the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party. It also occurs in the nearer-term due to After Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which runs most Wednesday nights through September 2nd, plus Saturday, September 12th.

Extended Evening Hours Return to DHS in Fall 2026

The good news is that Walt Disney World has added Extended Evening Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for select dates in September and October. Extended Evening Hours will continue at DHS on the following dates:

• September 16, 2026
• September 23, 2026
• September 30, 2026
• October 7, 2026
• October 14, 2026
• October 28, 2026

October 28, 2026 is likely the last ExEH of the year at DHS. That is consistent with past precedent, and has seemingly been confirmed by Animal Kingdom hosting the following Wednesday.

Extended Evening Hours is fantastic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s the #2 park for the perk, behind only Magic Kingdom. EPCOT is okay, but gets dragged down by distances between headliners eating up too much event time. Animal Kingdom is awesome or awful (with very little middle ground), depending on the date.

Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom, Again.

As noted above, Animal Kingdom is the “backup” park for Extended Evening Hours when there are conflicts at the others, particularly during party season.

There are several instances of that going forward, from After Hours and Jollywood Nights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to MNSSHP and MVMCP at Magic Kingdom. On top of that, there are private park buyouts at both DHS and EPCOT that shift the perk to Animal Kingdom and result in a very inconsistent ExEH schedule for late October.

The good news is that inconsistency is ending. We previously predicted that Extended Evening Hours would continue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios most dates through October 28, 2026, with Animal Kingdom taking over starting on November 4, 2026 due to the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party at DHS.

From then until early 2027, Animal Kingdom will likely host the second Extended Evening Hours of the week. That is what has happened in each of the last few years. It would seem that prediction is accurate based on Walt Disney World latest calendar update.

Here are all of the upcoming (official) dates when Animal Kingdom hosts Extended Evening Hours:

• August 26, 2026 (tonight!)
• September 2, 2026
• October 20, 2026
• October 26, 2026
• November 4, 2026

November 4, 2026 is as far out as the calendar goes, but it is highly likely that Extended Evening Hours will continue on every Wednesday between then and December 30, 2026 or maybe January 6, 2027 (that date is just far enough in the new year that ExEH could revert to Magic Kingdom). This should be the end of the inconsistency, with an EPCOT and Animal Kingdom cadence for the remainder of November and December 2026.

Rides Open for Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom

Here’s the eligible attraction roster for Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom:

• Avatar Flight of Passage
• Expedition Everest
• Na’vi River Journey
• Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

That’s it. Four attractions. Not even Kali River Rapids (too late to get soaked) or Kilimanjaro Safaris (animals are asleep).

This ride roster is one obvious issue with Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. It’s a very similar story with Early Entry at DAK. You better hope nothing has unplanned downtime, as even one attraction breaking down means 25% of the park offline.

Issues with Extra “Evening” Hours at DAK

The bad news if you attend Extended “Evening” Hours at Animal Kingdom in the next couple of months is that it’ll be broad daylight out when the event starts. By late October, sunset is halfway through, so it’ll by dusk by the end of the event.

That’s not quite as bad as the summer months when Animal Kingdom has hosted ExEH and the event has ended before sunset, which is presumably one of the big drivers of guest complaints about the perk being offered at Animal Kingdom. However, it’s still not great!

A big part of the appeal of Extended Evening Hours is the notion that you’re getting late nights in one of the parks, and this still won’t feel like that. Even if park hours are extended, Magic Kingdom closes to day guests at least three full hours after ExEH at DAK ends!

Animal Kingdom also has an inability to absorb crowds. This is always true, which is why there’s a ‘tipping point’ when DAK goes from totally manageable to crowded, without much of a moderately busy middle ground.

Such is the nature of a limited ride roster, which is down one more attraction this year due to DINOSAUR being reimagined into Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent. With only 4 attractions open for Extended Evening Hours, that is not a lot of crowd-absorbing capacity. It’s entirely possible lines will be longer at the start of ExEH than they’ll be that same day at 5 pm.

This was a lesson that was reinforced for me during a recent Early Entry at Animal Kingdom. It wasn’t a particularly busy day, but between the limited Early Entry lineup and Zootopia: Better Zoogether breaking down, Early Entry was busier than it was two hours later. I literally could’ve slept in and come out ahead. My suspicion is that it’ll be a similar story with ExEH until the Tropical Americas headliners open in late 2027 or 2028.

Good Time to Do ExEH at DAK

Once Animal Kingdom takes over ExEH hosting duties in November and December, the extra hours will be entirely after sunset due to Daylight Saving Time ending on November 1, 2026. At that point, the sunset time will be around 5:30 pm, as opposed to the current 7:50 pm.

We love DAK after dark. It’s something many Walt Disney World fans, even longtime ones, have never experienced. Like the other parks, Animal Kingdom is something special at night. The park is an attraction unto itself, so I stop caring that only 4 rides are open. I could wander for 2 hours, doing absolutely nothing, and have a satisfying evening.

Animal Kingdom after dark has the same ‘heightened senses’ sensation as the other parks, but with the added wrinkle of the animals. Well, not so much the animals being exhibited, but the insects. They add serene ‘surround sound’ to the experience. On a slower evening, the park can feel eerily empty, with more noise from bugs than guests.

Once November rolls around, Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is great because it actually occurs in the evenings. Pandora – World of Avatar looks stunning at night, and takes on a totally different atmosphere that’s otherworldly.

Then there’s Christmas, highlighted by the Discovery Island luminaries and other lights. Extended Evening Hours dates after November 13, 2026 are downright fantastic because these displays look brilliant. (In all likelihood, the luminaries will be up by November 4, 2026.) We love Animal Kingdom at Christmas, and that plus Pandora after dark gives DAK a lot of appeal, even with the limited ride roster. Just be sure to arrive early enough to catch the final set of Merry Menagerie!

ExEH at DAK Savvy Strategy

Avatar Flight of Passage is the main draw of Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Many guests view of ExEH as an alternative to paying for Lightning Lane Single Pass, and prioritize Flight of Passage.

Due to this, Flight of Passage is busy at the start of Extended Evening Hours. Accordingly, our advice is to save Flight of Passage until the end of the night. We’ve done events during which Flight of Passage posts a 60-90 minute wait at the start and is a walk-on towards the end. At least, on the less busy nights.

After waiting that long once, most guests will get their fill of Flight of Passage and move on to other areas of the park. The interminably long pre-show also discourages re-rides.

Accordingly, the best approach to ExEH at Animal Kingdom is starting with Expedition Everest. The all-in time is short (no preshows!) and it should have a low wait time. You could probably do Expedition Everest repeatedly if your body can tolerate it. Enjoy Disco Yeti before the critically endangered species goes extinct.

From there, doing Zootopia: Better Zoogether one (1) time makes sense if your body can tolerate it. Mine cannot, so I’ll take this time to wander. Following that, end the night in Pandora – World of Avatar where you should be able to knock out both Na’vi River Journey and Avatar Flight of Passage. Wait times here will largely be dependent upon crowd levels; dates during holiday weeks might mean the lines are still lengthy.

Again, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: Big Blue & Beyond, and Feathered Friends in Flight all end operations in the late afternoon and will not be available during Extended Evening Hours.

Accordingly, we’d recommend arriving a few hours early to do other attractions, stage shows, and atmospheric entertainment that won’t be an option during Extended Evening Hours.

Another decent option is doing Avatar Flight of Passage about an hour before park closing on moderately busy days. Regular guests will already be departing, and those Park Hopping to DAK specifically for ExEH won’t be there quite yet. It should be a sweet spot.

That’ll also give you more time to just enjoy strolling around once darkness descends on the park, and that’s truly our favorite way to spend Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Not doing anything at all, just enjoying the ambiance!

This also allows you to leave DAK before ExEH is over, once you’ve gotten your fill of the serene setting. Unlike with other parks that host Extended Evening Hours, you’ll still be able to Park Hop elsewhere even at the halfway point of the perk!
