Disney World Has Finally Found Its Replacement for Pop Warner, and It’s…John Cena?!

Walt Disney World crowds are most impacted by school breaks. This is hardly stop-the-presses news. It’s patently obvious given the core demographic for Magic Kingdom, which is families with kids. There’s a reason why the weeks of Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and other breaks are among the busiest weeks of the year.

Less obvious are the “sneaky” weeks when regional school breaks or events spike in attendance. The two we’ve discussed at length on this blog are Ski Week and Jersey Week. Other examples include the massive youth sporting events hosted at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in the late winter and spring, and again in November and December.

Up until the last few years, the biggest of these used to be Pop Warner. Those two words no doubt sent chills down the spine of longtime Walt Disney World vacation planners. For the longest time, this was the big red flag during our favorite week of the year at Walt Disney World, especially at the Value Resorts.

Pop Warner was so infamous among Walt Disney World fans and we got so many complaints from first-timers that we included warnings about it in countless posts, and actively recommended avoiding the All Stars during Pop Warner. Then a few years ago, Pop Warner departed Disney for Universal.

Last year, the Pop Warner Super Bowl and Cheer & Dance Nationals left Central Florida completely, moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, where the events will once again be hosted December 5-13, 2026. It was the end of an era, as up until last year, Pop Warner had been held in Orlando every year since 1995.

It would seem that Walt Disney World has finally found its ‘replacement’ sporting event for Pop Warner at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in mid-December 2026. And that answer is, checks notes, John Cena?! Here’s the official announcement…

John Cena Classic Comes to Walt Disney World

WWE and the Walt Disney Company have announced an expansion of their partnership with a special two-day takeover of ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on December 14-15, 2026. Headlined by two massive events, The John Cena Classic and a Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday-themed Worlds Collide, the collaboration will bring together the companies’ renowned storytelling to create a landmark crossover moment for Disney and WWE fans alike.

The first-ever edition of The John Cena Classic will feature WWE’s biggest names across Raw and SmackDown against the brightest future Superstars from NXT, on Monday, December 14, 2026. The event will culminate by announcing the top Superstar of the night as decided by the WWE Universe.

Members of Club WWE, WWE’s recently launched exclusive fan membership program, will vote in real time for their favorite Superstar performance and award the night’s top honor. Fans can participate in the voting by registering for Club WWE at WWE.com/ClubWWE. The John Cena Classic will stream live on Netflix on December 14, 2026 as a special edition of Monday Night Raw.

Additionally, the WWE will produce an Avengers: Doomsday edition of Worlds Collide, featuring the biggest Superstars from WWE, NXT and AAA, on Tuesday, December 15, 2026. This comes ahead of the theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026.

Surrounding the events, WWE and Fanatics will stage WWE World, a two-day immersive fan event, located at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, giving fans access to exclusive merchandise and photo and autograph opportunities with WWE Superstars. WWE will also sell Avengers: Doomsday co-branded products that include title belts at WWE World, WWEShop.com, and across select Disney retail stores.

Two-day combo tickets will go on sale starting Friday, November 13, 2026 at 10am ET via Ticketmaster.com. General presale for combo tickets will begin Thursday, November 12, 2026 at 10am ET. Fans can register now to be the first to receive general event information by visiting: https://www.wwe.com/CenaClassic. Additional event and fan experience details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Our Commentary

I’ll be honest with you. The six paragraphs above are practically gibberish to me. I mean, I can comprehend that there are two WWE special events coming to Walt Disney World on December 14-15, 2026, that tickets go on sale soon, one somehow relates to Avengers: Doomsday, and other pertinent details. But it’s also very heavy on WWE jargon, and that’s all lost on me. Now I know how normies must feel when Disney fans bust out the acronyms!

I’m just sharing this for a couple of reasons. For one, because I think this partnership between Disney and the WWE is fascinating. Despite not being one of them, I’m aware that there are a lot of Disney fans who are also WWE fans. It’s kind of like Taylor Swift and Disney, or Spirit Jerseys and Disney…but with shirtless dudes.

The overlap makes perfect sense! Both involve a lot of theatrics, suspension of disbelief, showmanship, and dedicated fandoms more broadly. I get the appeal of the WWE, even if it’s not for me. No judgment whatsoever–I’ve just already reached my personal quota of dorky hobbies.

I also think it’s interesting that Disney seemingly wants to be in the John Cena business. Although I’m only aware of him via his Hollywood exploits, I actually like John Cena a lot. He’s funny, charismatic, and not overly self-serious.

Cena seems to have replaced the Rock as the “it” wrestler turned actor, and it’s fairly easy to see why. Maybe Cena will be in the next animated movie turned live action remake, he’ll keep his nipples, and it won’t bomb. (I’m not familiar with his full filmography, but we really enjoyed Blockers. He’s been in a couple of other silly movies that have demonstrated his comedic chops, too.)

Then there’s how aggressive Disney has been in seeking out alternative sports. Within the span of less than a month, there have been major announcements for Banana Ball and now the John Cena Classic. I would hazard a guess that the Walt Disney World connection to both is less consequential than the strategic partnerships, as sports are incredibly valuable to streaming services.

More importantly, because Pop Warner did have an outsized impact on Walt Disney World and, although fundamentally different in nature, this is a seemingly major event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, and thus has the potential to do the same.

Although I’m stepping outside my comfort zone a bit on this, I’m skeptical that’ll be the case. The fact that Disney just announced tickets will go on sale with about a one-week notice for an event that’s a little over a month away strongly suggests to me that they’re not expecting it to draw tourists. Of course, WWE might’ve dictated the timing on this, or it’s possible that the two parties just agreed to terms on a partnership, and threw this onto the schedule as quickly as possible.

Regardless of the underlying reason, the John Cena Classic is presumably targeted primarily at locals in Central Florida and other Southern states. That’s further reinforced by this occurring on two weeknights, and the announcement coming after Walt Disney World already has very limited hotel availability for these dates. If Disney were expecting this to be an attendance or bookings driver, the announcement would’ve come way earlier.

Ultimately, this post basically exists to assuage any fears that the John Cena Classic will draw massive crowds to Walt Disney World and turn what’s otherwise at the tail end of one of our 10 Best Weeks to Visit Walt Disney World in 2026-2028 into a worst week. That almost certainly won’t be the case.

We’re sharing because we’ve received a lot of questions about the Pro Bowl and other professional sporting events in the past, and none of them have moved the needle. Nevertheless, we would recommend locking in a hotel for these dates if you haven’t already, as the already-limited availability vanishing is the most likely guest-facing outcome for Walt Disney World. On the plus side, if we are wrong and the John Cena Classic results in colossal crowds at Walt Disney World, well, at least they’ll be invisible!
