Lightning Lane Single Pass is Selling Out Faster

We recently looked at What’s Up with Lightning Lane Multi Pass Availability at Walt Disney World? Or rather, why there’s a lack of ride reservations, with attraction time slots filling up faster than ever. Now, we’re going to do the same thing with Lightning Lane Single Pass, which is selling out faster than before.
As quick background since we don’t focus on it nearly as much, Lightning Lane Single Pass (LLSP) is the replacement for Individual Lightning Lanes (ILL). This is the a la carte line-skipping for TRON Lightcycle Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios, and Avatar Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom.
The changes to Lightning Lane Single Pass are more or less the same as those to Lightning Lane Multi-Pass (LLMP). Guests can now book in advance, with 3-day or 7-day (plus) windows depending upon the status of guests. That’s the biggest change for both systems, and the impact of that alone is more than anything else. But my personal perspective is that LLMP changed more than LLSP due to differences in the attraction roster, removal of stacking rules, etc. So rightly or wrongly, I was expecting much less of an impact to LLSP than LLMP.
That’s not what we’ve seen so far. On most days since the new services launched, many/most of the Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions have been selling out in advance. In searching availability 3 to 7 days out, I’ve generally had better success in being able to book all of the aforementioned LLSP attractions, but the full range of return times weren’t available.
Honestly, this caught me by surprise and wasn’t even on my radar until receiving reactions to the ‘What’s Up with LLMP Availability?” article. I have never paid as much attention to the a la carte line-skipping option because, frankly, it’s not something I ever buy. There was no reason to do field testing with Individual Lightning Lanes–they were either available or not. Not something you could really hack or maximize.
My sentiment is similar with LLSP, and I’m also not a huge fan of upcharges. I’d rather work around line-skipping services than buy them, and that’s fairly easy with Lightning Lane Single Pass thanks to Early Entry, rope drop, and late nights. Similarly, we will seldom purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass “for fun.” (It’s also worth acknowledging that we’re bloggers, not the average guests, so the advice here is seldom what we would do, but what you should do.) But I digress.
Now that I’ve spent several days testing out Lightning Lane Single Pass availability, I see that it’s not-so-hot. In fact, let’s just start our analysis with availability graphs from all of the LLSP attractions courtesy of thrill-data.com:





What these heat maps show is that most of the a la carte Lightning Lanes went from abundant same-day availability under ILL to very little under LLSP. There’s a marked shift on July 24. Before that, you could routinely purchase a Lightning Lane for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, for example, right up until park closing with a near-immediate return time.
That all changed on July 24. As we’ve previously discussed, almost every Lightning Lane Multi-Pass and Single Pass filled up faster on launch day than on the last day of Genie+ despite comparable crowds. That second part is particularly relevant because, when it comes to launch day itself, nothing changed about Single Pass aside from the name.
What I mean by this is that, if you look at July 24 in a vacuum, it was exactly the same for Lightning Lane Single Pass as Individual Lightning Lane was the previous day. There was no advance booking on July 23, so it should stand to reason that LLSP would sell on a similar trajectory to ILL the day before. All subsequent days are a completely different story due to the impact of advance booking, but not that day. July 24 should’ve been roughly the same as July 23.

And yet, that’s not what happened. Lightning Lane Single Pass availability was incredibly limited–consistent with what we’d see in the week that followed. (Before you attribute that to vloggers, bloggers, and thirst-for-first Floridians…there aren’t that many of us. There’s literally no way these demographics had a meaningful impact on Avatar Flight of Passage availability, for example; maybe like 10 people were testing in DAK on day one.)
The more obvious and likely explanation is that Walt Disney World is throttling Lightning Lane availability because it’s brand new and they themselves aren’t sure of what to expect. That they’ll slowly open the valve, so to speak, in the weeks to come. We should start seeing more upfront availability and ride reservation refills as the months go on. This is something we’ve already discussed in other posts about LLMP, so I’m not going to rehash that.
It surprises me a little bit that Walt Disney World would throttle Lightning Lane Single Pass availability, as it doesn’t have the other “moving parts” that they need to account for with LLMP. So I assumed it wouldn’t happen. Nevertheless, there’s no clearer sign than July 24 availability for LLSP that it was happening. So it’s safe to say that it was, despite there being less of a “need” for it.
Going forward, there are other explanations as to why Lightning Lane Single Pass is selling out faster than Individual Lightning Lanes…

The obvious explanation is that instead of everyone booking same-day, and thus it taking longer for Lightning Lanes to sell out, these Single Passes can now be booked as many as 21 days in advance. As such, this could mostly be viewed as a straightforward story of pulling forward demand. Instead of booking up over the course of hours on the day-of, they’re booking up over the course of days ahead of time.
This is undoubtedly the biggest factor at play, and we’d expect this to be true going forward as a result. Lightning Lane Single Pass is selling out ahead of time because you can book it ahead of time. No big mystery and probably no further explanation needed–this angle is fairly self-explanatory and simple stuff.
However, this cannot completely explain-away the discrepancy between Individual Lightning Lanes and Lightning Lane Single Pass. Especially given that there were plenty of dates during slower times of the year–like right now–when ILLs were not selling out at all. No amount of pulling forward demand would matter if there wasn’t enough demand for a sell out.

One contributing factor is, as silly as this might sound, the streamlined purchase process. One underappreciated enhancement to the new Lightning Lane system is the user interface and order flow. Over the years, we’ve criticized Disney IT for the amount of unnecessary friction and confusion introduced, and how this was the exact opposite of what companies like Amazon do, spending billions to improve the user experience to boost sales.
Well, Walt Disney World finally pulled a page from that playbook, and the ability to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass in one transaction has likely boosted sales. It’s as simple as checking a box, selecting times, and completing the checkout, rather than separate transactions for Multiple Pass and Single Pass in each park. I’d hazard a guess this has increased sales, even if only slightly. It all adds up.
Switching to a pre-arrival system likely resulted in a major boost to Lightning Lane Single Pass bookings for a few reasons…

First, FOMO and FUD–two of my favorite “facronyms.” We’ve ranted at length in the commentaries to posts about fireworks dessert parties and other upcharges about the WDW FOMO Machine. In a nutshell, it’s easy to fall into the FOMO trap, and you could drop an extra $5,000 or more on extras and upcharges to “guarantee” a great trip to Walt Disney World. You don’t want to miss out on something that’s “essential” to a great trip, so you err on the side of caution and buy a bunch of pointless upcharges that don’t actually guarantee that at all.
When shifting from same-day to pre-arrival ride reservations, there’s more of this FOMO. You haven’t started experiencing the parks, so you don’t know what wait times will be like, and might be more inclined to worry about ride reservations selling out. Horror stories about colossal crowds might be front of mind.
And then there are the attractions with virtual queues, which is where FUD comes into play. With the same-day booking, you can try your hand at the morning virtual queue and still buy a Lightning Lane later if you fail. With advance booking, you haven’t tried your hand at the virtual queue sweepstakes, so you don’t know the outcome–you’re basically buying blind.
If you wait to try for the free virtual queue, you might not be able to purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass, which means potentially not being able to ride at all. If you’ve booked a Walt Disney World trip specifically to experience newer rides, this is probably not a risk you’re willing to take! (This minor-but-meaningful change to consumer psychology is yet another reason why virtual queues should be retired for Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle Run. They were guest unfriendly before, but now they’re really bad.)

Second, the unknown of crowds. This is somewhat of an outgrowth of the first point, but it’s especially true right now. As we’ve discussed at length, Walt Disney World is not busy right now. It’s been a slow summer at Orlando’s theme parks, as covered Summer (Still) Is NOT High Crowds Season at Walt Disney World. Since Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass launched, crowd levels have been 1/10 to 3/10 with WDW-wide average wait times of 26-34 minutes.
If you were buying Lightning Lanes same-day, you’d already be at the parks and able to feel this firsthand. Maybe you’d buy Lightning Lanes for one day, decide they weren’t necessary, and skip the rest. However, if you’re buying Lightning Lanes and making ride reservations ahead of time, you haven’t yet experienced crowds (or lack thereof) and might be inclined to overestimate them, err on the side of caution, etc.
In fairness, this cuts both ways. Walt Disney World is not as busy right now as many vacation planners might expect; conversely, there are a lot of dates in October through December where crowd levels will probably exceed expectations for the average guest. The key difference is that anyone visiting then who opted against purchasing Lightning Lanes pre-arrival can simply buy upon arrival. You cannot undo an “unnecessary” purchase. There are no refunds.

Finally, another big and underrated variable is that pre-arrival Lightning Lanes shift spending to before the trip. If you’re buying before you arrive, you don’t know what your ongoing daily costs have been or will be, just what the vacation package itself cost (which is obviously the biggest component of the trip, but it’s not everything).
One of the biggest complaints we’ve heard from recent Walt Disney World visitors is about all of the nickel and diming and unanticipated expenses incurred while on vacation, which surprised them and added up to a lot of money. This often came up in the context of Genie, with guests being annoyed that the paid FastPass service busted their budget and resulted in much more expensive vacation than anticipated.
This undoubtedly happened a lot. What also undoubtedly happened was guests going over budget while on vacation and simply not buying Lightning Lanes for later days during their trip because they could no longer afford it. I would hazard a guess that Walt Disney World saw this happening–even among guests with reasonably high satisfaction scores–and it was one major motivating factor for the switch to pre-arrival Lightning Lanes. It’s another way to increase adoption rates and sales.
This might seem like a far-fetched assumption, like we’re grasping at straws for explanations about increased uptake for Lightning Lane Single Pass. However, this is exactly what has happened with the Disney Dining Plan; that prepaid meal service exists not so guests can save money, but to shift spending before the trip and increase how much the average guests spends on food. Yes, you can save money with the DDP if you hack it–but the average guest is not. It was created as a way to keep people on-site and increase per guest spending.
(The flip side to Lightning Lanes, whether pre-arrival or same-day, is that it results in a shifting of spending for many guests, not an increase. Paying for FastPass might mean reducing spending on souvenirs, impulse snack purchases, etc. Even if this wasn’t the case during the free-spending days of pent-up demand, it’s likely to occur now and in the future as consumers engage in belt-tightening in a tougher economic environment.)

Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that demand has increased for Lightning Lane Single Pass for all of the above reasons. Given what we’ve seen since launch with both sides of the new-look paid FastPass service, it’s also safe to assume that supply is being throttled. It’s impossible to say how much of the dynamic we’re seeing now with reduced LLSP availability is due to demand versus supply.
I’m not willing to make any assumptions about how this will change going forward because of the third factor in the equation: crowds. Again, it’s not busy at all right now and won’t be for the next month-plus. So if we’re already seeing scarcity in a low crowd environment (including a tropical storm scare that has dumped tons of rain on Walt Disney World, further reducing crowds/demand), who knows what we’ll see once October through December roll around and attendance invariably increases.
Even assuming that some degree of throttling is taking place, I’d be inclined to bet that this gets worse–not better–in the final three months of the year and early 2025. That’s also a safe bet because it’s the dynamic that could be observed with Individual Lightning Lanes. Those went from having all-day availability from August through September to sometimes selling out before park opening during the ‘on-site advantage’ window during peak season.
About the only thing I can add is not to fall prey to the WDW FOMO Machine. You don’t need to buy Lightning Lanes, especially not the Single Passes. Every single ride on that list–even the ones with virtual queues (which are staying open for hours in the afternoon when the parks are slower)–is “beatable” without line-skipping. Both Avatar Flight of Passage and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance are easy during Early Entry or at the end of the night. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is miserable for Early Entry (IMO), but is also easy at the end of the night. Lightning Lane Single Pass can be nice to have–especially if you’d rather arrive late or leave early–but they’re not strictly necessary for most guests. As someone who is skeptical of spending on upcharges, I’d much sooner purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass in most scenarios, for whatever that’s worth!

You said in this post you could book up to 21 days in advance. I thought 14 was the limit. Has that changed?
You can book 7 days prior to your check in day if staying on property for a total of a 14 day stay. Meaning 21 days out max.
I think the idea that it’s easier to spend money ahead of time is the most compelling one. On the day (or after a day of attendance), guests feel how expensive parking, snacks, merchandise etc is, and also are familiar with the lineup and less worried about missing “essential” rides as they’re distracted by other activities. That $20/pp feels like it’s coming out of pocket and people don’t spend it, whereas ahead of time it feels like a rounding error on their already exorbitant vacation expense.
This makes me think that, whatever we think of the new system, it is clearly here to stay and working well for WDW. The only question is when they increase the price of LLSP to match this new elevated demand.
Its possible the recent changes to DAS may have had some impact as well. Realistically it’s probably just another drop in the bucket for factors you spelled out, but a lot of folks who were approved for DAS in the past are now being offered alternative accomodations. One forum I’m a part of took an informal poll, which showed that the approval rate for people who had gotten DAS in the past had plummeted to a 50%. Anecdotally, a lot of those people said because they were denied they felt they had to pay for LL options, as they are unable to stay in traditional queues. And of course, people who were gaming the DAS system are being denied as well.
Again, probably not a huge pool of people impacting sales but likely just nudging sellouts.
Why is the dwarf ride still a single purchase ride? It is absolutely not worth paying extra for. Yes it’s a good short ride that appeals to many including young kids but com on! Put it in the regular category for Pete’s sake. It certainly isn’t better than big thunder or splash mountain (RIP).
Not surprising. I bought the ILL for Cosmic Rewind once, just because VQ return times are unpredictable, and I had other things to plan around. If I could have bought the ILL in advance, I would have. (Then again, if I could have gotten in a standby line, even better…)
We are headed out for a trip on Aug 11-17th. We did buy LL multipass for our day at Hollywood Studios. I was on the Disney site at 7 am booking everything. We are staying onsite, so we were able to book 7 days out. We easily got everything we wanted for our first 3 rides, return times all in the morning. I had to add one more person later in the day and they still had Slinky Dog availability, which surprised me. We are doing MK on the day of a Halloween party, so we figured there was no need for Lightening Lane. I checked later in the day and even Tiana’s still had availability so fingers crossed that day will be slow! I could not bring myself to spend $20 per person for a 90 second Tron ride, we’ll take our chances with the virtual queue.
I personally can’t drop $100 for a family of 5 to experience a 3 minute ride. I’m hoping that this sell out of LLSP will reduce wait time in the regular line.

The problem is we had guests there last weekend and you could NOT buy the LLSP the day of, as they were simply all sold out (in August!!). Unfortunately I used to suggest that guests start the week out without Genie, see what they get done and then the last day or two of the trip (esp second visits to MK and HS), they splurge on the Genie or LLs that they need. You simply cannot afford to wait now, and you must make those decisions now; erring on the side of pre-purchase during your early booking window when you can select the time you want that works for you. Waiting to book either guarantees that 1) you get a crappy return time that screws up your plans or 2) you don’t get it at all and either don’t ride (ie, Tron or Guardians if you miss the VQ) or wait in really long lines (Seven dwarves or Rise). So… it puts guests in a conundrum. I think as soon as October rolls around guests would be remiss not to utilize every LLMP and SP available to them as crowds are going to be nuts. Sadly you can’t ‘wait and see what the crowds are like’ anymore. People complained about getting up at 7am and booking the day of, and I get it, but this is the flip side; booking in advance, things sell out. As someone who is visiting Amsterdam soon and missed out on Corrie Ten Boom house tickets and had to settle for getting up at 4am to book Anne Frank tickets and being lucky I got those…
I will say that for those with longer trips, you could still utilize the 1/2 paid passes strategy by booking the LLMP and SP for later in your trip, and going to rope drops and trying for VQs the first few day (when you have more energy)
My family is honestly just more likely to book LLMP and SP for afternoon; sleep in and ride our booked rides when we get there. In that sense, I don’t mind it… just have to pay the “sleep in tax” haha.
What I mean is how crowds influence same-day versus advance Lightning Lane sales in a theoretical sense, not when it comes to actual availability. (I probably could’ve made that clearer with regard to availability, but I hope the article as a whole does that.)
Advance purchases mean that people will “overbuy” the service in low crowds and “underbuy” in heavier crowds. However, in the latter scenario, there’s still day-of purchases…so that’ll continue to happen. By contrast, there’s no way of undoing a purchase already made in low crowds.
I think another driver is if we’re doing it from the UK likeme. I would be at the front of early entry not buying multiple lightning lanes and purchasing the single line eating lunch and leaving until the evening fro a break instead because the value proposition for me of the multiple pass isn’t there if I’m going to be discriminated against by not being allowed to book until I reach US soil when the best options are gone. if I can get an equal advantage on the big rides and zig when others zag I will take it.
For years we have gone to Walt Disney World in mid August. We have never felt the need to buy any of the paid items like Genie+. The crowd levels never warranted it. Because there was no advanced booking, you could make that gametime decision based on the crowds that morning, whether you needed to buy the paid line skipping. My fear now is the availability of advanced booking, combined with that disease called FOMO, people will just bite the bullet and spend the extra money upfront. As you have said many times capacity is what it is so the more people driven to the lightning lanes the less availability for the standby lanes. I know August is the beginning of the slow season, but I will not be shocked if I find longer standby lines next week due to the people that have been able to book rides in advance. I always like going at this time of year because it was generally quiet and we didn’t have to spend the extra to skip the lines. I know a lot of people are happy about this, but advance booking doesn’t necessarily make everyone happy, especially because you have to pay for it, when it was free of course I was happy. I’ll be curious to see your opinion as we learn more over time, the impact advance booking will have on standby times. In the future, I may be faced with either having to pay more during my August vacation or I’m going to have to wait in longer lines than in previous years. – AC
I think your fear is entirely rational and, honestly, I have the same one in the medium to long term.
With that said, I also think it’s too soon to see that fear realized this August or September. Thus far, wait times have been really low this month. There’s still time for Walt Disney World to stop throttling the LLMP/SP inventory and for a spike in wait times as a result…but I don’t see that happening this fast.
Also – I’ve been told multiple times that Disney’s goal was/is balance with the new ride reservation system, meaning that standby benefits–not just line-skipping. That’s what we’re seeing thus far, suggesting the more limited LL availability is a feature and not a bug.
Hi Tom, I would love to see you do the same sort of comparison for Disneyland because from what I am hearing and seeing they are having the exact same problems over there and they don’t have the pre selection process. I follow a couple of vloggers who have noticed that there just isn’t the availability that there used to be. Rides now have return times blown out to many many hours away, whereas before you used to be able to get return times within the hour or almost immediately for many rides. One suggested, like you, that they are throttling the amount available and seem to be releasing more time slots later in the day. I would love to see this tested somehow as it will completely change the way I had planned my upcoming visit to DL using LL’s.
It’s absolutely throttling at Disneyland. No doubt about it whatsoever.
The only question is whether that changes down the road or if this is the new normal. I’ll be using LLMP this week at Disneyland, but don’t plan on doing any serious testing/results reporting at Disneyland until October because I want things to settle down.
I’m waiting to see how this all plays out before my next trip. I know it’s a “mileage may vary” but most of the attractions under the single pass aren’t rides I’m clamoring to do. I do think it’s worth skipping the VQ for Guardians, and RotR is worth rope dropping. I didn’t think SDMT was that great, FoP almost made me sick, and I don’t care for the Tron movies and don’t have a desire to fight over that ride.
I’m also booked for a trip in September, the 19th -30th, and am planning on buying LLMPs & LLSPs. We have not been to WDW in years, have never used VQs, and definately want to ride all the new rides much much more than the older ones we’ve done dozens of times in the past. We also have a problem standing in long 60 minute plus lines- just absolutely can’t do it!! I dont think we can handle doing early entrance every day either. I’m unsure about the crowd levels when we’ll be there in September but touring plans website is predicting 4/10 – 7/10 crowd levels during our stay, and a lot of HS and Epcot levels are set at 6/10 – 7/10 most days during our trip. After reading Tom’s other articles regarding storm season and hurricanes – I’m wondering if we buy LLMPs or LLSPs in advance for each/any days of our trip if WDW will refund those purchases if the parks / rides end up closed on any of those days due to severe weather??
I think they are throttling supply because Single LL uses the same bucket of spots as multi-pass. I think they’re limiting both until they get a good understanding of purchasing patterns. Now, if I was a cynical person, I’d say they are artificially limiting supply to increase demand (FOMO). So as time goes by, they can increase supply and still sell all of them.

Have a visit in Sept, x 9 days and staying on property so will be able to book SLL 7-16 days in advance for the length of our stay. Worried with what I’m reading we may not be able to get SLL for all 5 of the key SLL rides in advance – is it realistic to anticipate getting at least all 5 once each? Is there a strategy to succeed? Should we book our last day first and work backwards, or start with our priorities even if they are on earlier dates which may have already been picked over?

You should be totally fine–especially in September.
The issues I’m seeing are typically inside 3 days. There’s typically really good availability 3+ days (only some time slots missing). I haven’t looked 7+ days out, but my guess is that you’ll have 100% of options (all rides + all time slots) if you’re booking that far in advance.
I had the same thought about the streamlined purchase process, but I still think there has to be some single pass throttling going on (as crazy as that seems from a Disney-profits standpoint).
My only evidence: my anecdotal standby/VQ wait times last week on two single pass attractions. Rise of the Resistance had a dramatically inflated wait time in the middle of the day, quoted at 80 minutes when it was actually 30-35 (perhaps due to low single pass use?). But even more dramatic: I walked on to Cosmic Rewind from the virtual queue line. That’s a marked change from what I’m used to.
I was about to write off your experience with RotR, as that happens with a shocking amount of frequency. But you’re 100% right about Cosmic Rewind–even at nights (which is when I “aim” to have a return time), the waits have gotten longer and longer in the VQ line.
Our recent July trip might have some relevance, departing July 22nd, just before the new change. When we went, there was hardly any reason to pay for the rides, as wait times were manageable, which we probably wouldn’t have known before we went. Peak times will likely be different, but I think there’s a real possibility for buyer’s remorse outside of peak time. Of course, a lot of factors go into this, including length of stay. The only ones we were tempted about were the virtual queues, which we were able to snag, making the issue moot.
I’ll forever mourn the same-day flexibility that died with Maxpass and Genie+. Multi-pass is an expensive, forced return to the spreadsheet planning of an entire week’s vacation timetable, and I’m opting out. Hypocritically, I will probably spend money on the ILLs for virtual queue rides. I experienced the shock and dismay of being closed out of the Cosmic Rewind queue last time I was in Epcot, and was deeply grateful for the ILL option. My family hasn’t experienced Tron or Tiana yet, and refuses to miss Cosmic Rewind. As annoyed as it makes me, I have to acknowledge that the price of the ILLs is a trade off we’re willing to make in an admittedly FUD-based decision logic.
It’s the not knowing if I will score a VQ that is the biggest driver for me. For my upcoming Sep trip, I’m going all in on VQ ride Single LLs because I don’t want to risk not being able to ride. I always would have bought FOP anyway and at that point, it feels like “whats the harm in one more?” to throw on 7DMT, which is usually the cheapest! Rise is where I draw the line though, haha
Biggest changes for single use is now you can chose and modify to a more preferred time and those staying off site don’t have to wait til park opens to buy at all.
