When to Visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios & Worst ‘Red Flag’ Crowds Days to Avoid in 2026-2027
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has good & bad days to visit, including some ‘red flag’ dates to avoid and others to target for lower crowds in late 2026 & 2027. This explains why there are big differences in wait times, with lists of the least & most crowded dates in October and beyond to assist in planning your Halloween or Christmas trip to Walt Disney World.
As with the Best Days to Do Magic Kingdom & Worst ‘Red Flag’ Crowds to Avoid During Halloween to Christmas 2026, this largely comes down to special events. Party Season disrupts attendance dynamics and creates a “porcupine pattern” of wait times and crowd levels. Both Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party push attendance at Magic Kingdom much higher on the dates they’re not occurring and lower on days of the events.
When it comes to Magic Kingdom, this dynamic is well-documented a key discussion points of our August through December crowd calendars. However, this is NOT simply a ‘copy+paste’ of those recommendations, but with park names changed. To the contrary, our advice for Disney’s Hollywood Studios is almost the opposite of what it is for Magic Kingdom!
We strongly recommend that readers visit Magic Kingdom during the daytime hours on MNSSHP and MVMCP dates, and in an ideal world, you’d have Park Hopper tickets and bounce to another park at around 4 pm. This is because most guests do not have Park Hopper tickets, so they make the logical decision to avoid Magic Kingdom on dates when it closes 4-5 hours early. This results in significantly lighter crowds on party days.
In theory, the dynamic should be very similar with Disney’s Hollywood Studios during its special events, which is largely just the Disney Jollywood Nights Christmas Party. However, that is not the case; there are several key differences.
First, guests who attend Disney’s Hollywood Studios on party nights aren’t going to lose as many hours as those doing the same at Magic Kingdom. The castle park closes at 10 pm or 11 pm on non-party nights. That’s an extra 4-5 hours, plus seeing the night parade & fireworks, and getting to enjoy the cooler evening hours in the park.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios closes at 9 or 9:30 pm most normal nights and closes to regular guests at 7 pm on party nights, meaning that the amount of lost time on a party vs. non-party night is ~2 hours.
That’s still a good chunk of time, but it’s not as make or break. This is doubly true for guests with small children, many of whom realistically realize they won’t be spending a full day at DHS, anyway. Perhaps most critically, day guests still have the opportunity to watch Fantasmic, so they’re not missing out on any nighttime spectaculars.
For all of these reasons, crowd levels are typically not materially lower on party-shortened days at Disney’s Hollywood Studios like they are at Magic Kingdom. There’s no attendance distortion, so they’re also not materially higher on other days, either. If you’re only doing DHS from park opening until early evening, this is really all you need to know. If you plan on staying until park closing (or close to it), there’s more to take into account.
On a normal night, Disney’s Hollywood Studios clears out in the final few hours of the day. That is not the case on event dates.
Instead, there’s an influx of guests during those final few hours for mix-in. For those unfamiliar with it, mix-in is the informal term for the overlap between the regular operating day and time when guests with tickets to the special event are allowed to enter the park early.
This doesn’t just impact attractions. It also means heavier crowds for Fantasmic, as both day guests and party guests try to see the show. It also virtually guarantees that there won’t be a second showing of the nighttime spectacular at or after park closing. This alone is a big deal, as Fantasmic frequently gets second performances on non-event nights from October through December, and even on busier days, that second showtime seldom is more than half-full.
This essentially amounts to a negative double-whammy. Daytime crowds aren’t that much lower on party days because most regular guests won’t avoid DHS due to a 7 pm closure, so you’re not saving much time in line throughout the day. Then, when wait times would normally be falling at the end of the night, party guests arrive and keep those lines longer.
There are also far fewer party dates at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Whereas MNSSHP and MVMCP are held 3-4 nights per week from October through December, there are a grand total of 15 dates for Disney Jollywood Nights between November 7, 2026 and January 5, 2027. Jollywood Nights starts earlier and ends later in the year (technically, new year) than MVMCP, and it’s never held on more than two evenings per week. There are several weeks during that stretch when it only occurs once.
This means there are 5-6 non-party nights per week to absorb the (theoretically) displaced crowds from Jollywood Nights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As a result, the contrast in wait times between party days and non-party days at DHS is far less extreme than at Magic Kingdom. And on top of that, this isn’t happening in a vacuum. Guests can only schedule so much, and they’re more likely to plan around MVMCP, while ignoring Jollywood Nights.
Avoiding MVMCP is already a hassle, and most guests won’t juggle plans around two different parties in two parks–oh, and don’t forget Extended Evening Hours at EPCOT and Animal Kingdom. They’ll work their plans around Magic Kingdom being open late, and that’s it. They’ll just visit the other 3 parks whenever.
This is all corroborated by graphs of average wait times over the last few years (via thrill-data). With Magic Kingdom, it is immediately evident when MNSSHP and MVMCP were held (low daytime waits) and when they weren’t (sharp spikes). You can see the “Porcupine Pattern” above, with it being immediately clear which dates Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party was held.
With Disney’s Hollywood Studios, there’s virtually no discernible difference. Crowds rise and fall around school breaks and public holidays as opposed to events. I would hazard a guess that if I really dug deep into the data, I’d find that weather moved the needle more than parties. That’s just a guess–the point is that there’s no clear pattern in daily DHS crowd levels in November and December in any of the past 3 years.
All of this is why we do NOT recommend a zig when they zag recommendation for Disney’s Hollywood Studios like we do with Magic Kingdom. Attendance won’t be that much lower during the day before parties. Displaced crowds won’t be as big of a deal because there are fewer events. The intuitive approach is the correct one at DHS. Don’t get too clever and overthink it!
The loss of those quiet nights and ~2 hours is the difference-maker at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Since Jollywood Nights will be the only chance many event attendees have to visit DHS, they’ll arrive right at 5:30 pm when mix-in starts to cram rides in before the party starts. Instead of wait times falling in the final two hours of the evening like normal, they will increase on DJN nights from 5:30 to 7 pm.
This is unfortunate because the final few hours Disney’s Hollywood Studios is open is when we recommend knocking out Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and/or Toy Story Land. On some evenings, it’s possible to do those entire lands in the last two hours of the night. That will not be the case on DJN nights.
Consequently, we recommend doing Disney’s Hollywood Studios on non-party days if you’re spending all day in the park and don’t have Park Hopper tickets. Now that we’ve explained the why and how of this, here’s the list of dates to avoid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the remainder of the year…
When to Avoid Disney’s Hollywood Studios – October 2026
- October 14, 2026
- October 28, 2026
None of these qualify as ‘red flag’ dates. They’re all when Extended Evening Hours is held at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and there’s no mix-in for ExEH. Nevertheless, Extended Evening Hours attendees do typically show up before park closing. Many even spend all day at DHS if they don’t have Park Hopper tickets. The other big difference is that there’s no early park closing on ExEH dates. File this trio of dates under ‘good to avoid, but not worth upending your plans over.’
On the other hand, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is fantastic for Extended Evening Hours. If you’re among the guests eligible for ExEH at DHS, we highly recommend you attend. We’d gently nudge you elsewhere during the day, but if you don’t have Park Hoppers, our advice would be doing DHS all-day for the sake of attending ExEH.

- December 21, 2026
- December 23, 2026
- January 3, 2027
- January 5, 2027
All of these are Disney Jollywood Nights dates. Our advice with regard to DJN is more than the ‘gentle nudge’ that it is with ExEH since Disney’s Hollywood Studios does close early on those nights and there’s more of a mix-in with event guests.
Our recommendation is mostly not as emphatic as it is with Magic Kingdom on party vs. non-party dates. If you’d leave DHS by 7 pm, regardless, and one of the above dates works much better for your schedule, it’s not the end of the world if you ignore our advice.
However, there are a handful of ‘red flag’ dates on list above. When it comes to these, ‘gentle nudge’ turns into ‘hard (but loving!) shove.’ These are during the peak weeks at Walt Disney World, when DHS is much busier and you might find yourself needing a longer runway to get everything done, and the release valve of the second Fantasmic is more valuable.
The following should be considered red flag dates at Disney’s Hollywood Studios:
- November 23, 2026
- December 21, 2026
- December 23, 2026
- January 3, 2027
The first of these dates is the Monday of Thanksgiving week; the next two are the Monday and Wednesday of Christmas (there’s also a party the previous Saturday, meaning 3 events in 5 days); finally, the end of Christmas break. All of these dates coincide with peak weeks and will have elevated daytime crowds.
In between ‘gentle nudge’ and ‘hard shove’, I’d also add November 7, 2026 (Jersey Week/Veterans Day); November 21, 2026 (just before Thanksgiving and close to the next party); December 19, 2026 (just before Christmas and close to the next two parties); and January 5, 2027 (probably fine, but borderline). None of these dates reach ‘red flag’ status, but if you have the ability to avoid them without it being massively disruptive to your schedule, that’s advisable.

All of the above dates are After Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is similar to Extended Evening Hours. Except instead of being “free” for eligible guests, this party costs ~$199 per person. I don’t want to fixate on After Hours since, like ExEH, we’d only offer the ‘gentle nudge’ advice that guests avoid DHS on these dates.
None of them are red flag dates, although any that coincide with holidays or school breaks up until April (Mid-Winter Break and Spring Break, especially) should be avoided. Summer is safe.
If you’re looking for a quasi-VIP splurge, we recommend attending After Hours at DHS. Not as forcefully as with Extended Evening Hours given the whole $0 vs. ~$189, but it’s nevertheless a good premium product offering that can help you beat the crowds. See our Guide to After Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for strategy and more.
Best Dates to Do Disney’s Hollywood Studios
As for the best days to visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the low density of parties shouldn’t really disrupt our regular Best & Worst Days of the Week to Do Every Walt Disney World Park recommendations that much.
The one thing I will point out is that Jollywood Nights November dates are mostly Saturdays and Mondays, plus a couple of Wednesdays in late December 2026 and early January 2027.
Sunday is our (subjective) favorite day to do DHS, but only if you’re staying until the bitter end. If you’re arriving in the afternoon, you can accomplish a surprising amount in that half-day at DHS. Tourists clear out early as always, and locals visiting for the day also head for the exits since Monday is a workday.
Statistically speaking, Wednesday is the objective best day to do Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With the exception of event dates (which override) this should remain accurate in November and December 2026.
Thursdays will be the second-best day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios throughout the remainder of 2026. It’s usually neck and neck between Wednesday and Thursday, but displaced crowds during Party Season at Magic Kingdom gives the edge to Wednesday.
If you want to further complicate things, the savviest strategy all of all can be starting at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Jollywood Nights dates, and then bouncing to a different around 6 or 7 pm for the rest of the night if you have Park Hopper tickets.
From a practical perspective, this might be especially attractive when paired with the zig when they zag strategy for Magic Kingdom during Party Season since Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Disney Jollywood Nights are always held on different dates. Meaning you could start at Magic Kingdom on a MVMCP day and hop to DHS that night; then do the opposite on the Jollywood Nights day.
This is especially true when Disney’s Hollywood Studios gets earlier openings. It’ll often be the case that DHS opens at 8:30 am on Jollywood Nights dates, as opposed to the normal 9 am. This means Early Entry at 8 am instead of 8:30 am, or rope drop at 8:30 am instead of 9 am, and can offer significant upside.
Ultimately, that’s how we recommend approaching a day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios when the park is hosting the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party (and to a lesser extent, Extended Evening Hours and After Hours). This is a notable departure from our Magic Kingdom zig when they zag advice.
Again, this dynamic will not be as extreme at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as it is at Magic Kingdom. If you can only follow our Party Season advice at Magic Kingdom or DHS, do so at MK. When it comes to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this mostly matters for taking advantage of slower late nights and second showings of Fantasmic. If you’d leave by early evening, regardless, this is barely relevant to you.
Hopefully this helps you make more sense of why Disney’s Hollywood Studios is different than Magic Kingdom during Party Season. This arguably overexplains the topic, but we favor the “teach a person to fish” approach so you can understand the why of Walt Disney World, so you can take the advice and apply it to your own circumstances.

Once again Tom, your advice was invaluable! We spent entire last week September, to October 3, followed your advice on best days to visit which parks, went late morning to every park, had leisurely days too, and never waited more than 35 minutes at Hollywood or any other park, most a walk on. And great dining, Pirate bar a hoot! Priceless! Now if only my planning for Tokyo goes smoothly, going early November 2027. Just perusing their website gave us the willies ach!
