Disney World News: Trams Returning, Holiday Zombie Show, More Mobile Checkout
It’s time for another Walt Disney World news roundup! This one covers the latest changes to park hours, the overdue return of parking lot trams, more zombies for Christmas (finally), an official Orlando holiday celebrating WDW, and more.
As usual, we’ll start with the latest release of new and modified operating schedules. All four theme parks have had hours for another week added to DisneyWorld.com’s park hours. The current calendar now runs through February 12, 2022. Here are the hours for most dates that are newly-added through the end of this year and into Winter 2022:
- Magic Kingdom: 9 am to 8 pm
- Epcot: 10 am to 9 pm
- Hollywood Studios: 9 am to 9 pm
- Animal Kingdom: 9 am to 7 pm
- Disney Springs: 10 am to 11 pm (11:30 pm on Fridays & Saturdays)
The only noteworthy thing to report with the new hours is that Magic Kingdom has added a second 4:30 pm closing to the calendar on February 8, 2022. As you may recall, the park is also closing at that time on January 25, 2022. Both dates are to honor Cast Member service milestones, with the second night added due to a ‘backlog’ of recognition to be bestowed since an evening was missed during the phased reopening. This is the best possible reason for an early closure of Magic Kingdom and Cast Members deserve it after the last year-plus. (Even if you have an entirely selfish outlook, this is great for morale, which benefits guests.)
There are also some extensions to park hours. Magic Kingdom will now close at 1 am on December 30 and 31, with both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios still closing at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Additionally, Epcot’s opening time has moved forward from 11 am to 10 am December 4-6, 10-12, 18-31, and January 1, 2022. Animal Kingdom now has longer hours several dates in December, with a bunch of new 8 am openings and 8 pm closing times. (We highly recommend evenings in Animal Kingdom during the Christmas season!)
Let’s start the substantive news with a brand new holiday: Happy Walt Disney World Day to those who celebrate!!!
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will be joined by city commissioners, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and other elected officials to present an official proclamation to Walt Disney World, honoring the 50th Anniversary and declaring December 3, 2021 as Walt Disney World Day. Dyer will also participate in a service project alongside Disney VoluntEARS to support Second Harvest’s mission to help feed those in need in the community.
“For 50 years, Walt Disney World Resort has served as a beacon of hope and happiness in the Central Florida area, bringing the beloved magic found across the resort to children and families in our neighboring communities,” a press release states.
“After kicking off the 50th Anniversary celebration with $3 million in grants, Walt Disney World Resort is continuing the celebration with the community and is being recognized by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings with a special proclamation as December 3, 2021, will now be known as Walt Disney World Day.”
In other important news, “Disney’s Holiday Magic Quest” is returning for a second year with ZOMBIES stars Milo Manheim, Kylee Russell, Meg Donnelly and Trevor Tordjman competing in a high-stakes holiday adventure featuring new epic challenges. The quest will take place inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World after dark, as part of The World’s Most Magical Celebration that honors the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World.
Actress and comedian Yvette Nicole Brown will host as the stars navigate a series of new challenges and obstacles through a variety of Walt Disney World attractions. “Disney’s Holiday Magic Quest” airs Friday, Dember 3, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. EST/PST on Disney Channel and will be available to stream on Disney+ starting December 10, 2021.
In this year’s “Disney’s Holiday Magic Quest” Maleficent has stolen the holiday star from atop the Holiday Tree (Disney’s term, not mine), and its pieces have been hidden throughout Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The ZOMBIES stars are tasked with finding the missing pieces and reassembling the star to restore the magic to the theme park. They’ll complete missions in Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, at the Tower of Terror, and more.
Above is a trailer for “Disney’s Holiday Magic Quest” so you can determine whether it’ll be your cup of tea. As an avid fan of “Resident Evil” and “Walking Dead” (until that show got tedious), I’ve long felt Christmas could use more zombies. So I’ll definitely be tuning in to check out the carnage.
Since last year, Walt Disney World has been testing a new mobile checkout option at select merchandise shops throughout the parks & resorts, available through the My Disney Experience mobile app. Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the company is expanding this feature to a few more locations.
Mobile checkout is currently available or coming soon to the following gift shops at Walt Disney World:
- World of Disney at Disney Springs
- Creations Shop at Epcot
- Emporium at Magic Kingdom — New
- Mickey’s of Hollywood at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — Coming soon
- Island Mercantile at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park — Coming soon
Given that we are quick to criticize Disney IT, we want to pause here briefly to applaud the technological enhancements made during the last year-plus at Walt Disney World. Merchandise Mobile Checkout, Table Service To-Go, and Walk-up Waitlist are all solid improvements to the guest experience and they work well. (In fairness, we’ve used mobile checkout like once or twice since we don’t buy many souvenirs–but it saved us a long wait for 50th Anniversary stuff!)
I have concerns about the societal ills of over-automation and how it’ll lead to more impersonal and isolating experiences, those are more generalized. Walt Disney World is less worrying in that regard since you have so many interactions with Cast Members throughout the day. That hasn’t changed even with features like this added to My Disney Experience, and hopefully the company will exercise restraint and not take automation too far to the point that it dehumanizes the parks.
Rather, we view these app additions as unequivocal enhancements to the guest experience. Since waiting in line is such a significant component of visiting Walt Disney World (and will be regardless), the parks & resorts benefit from automation like this that eliminates added waits and friction points.
Driver you are clear…to spread a little holiday cheer! Parking trams will be returning to Magic Kingdom Park later this month and other Walt Disney World theme parks throughout 2022!✨ pic.twitter.com/KpJyBZfTBu
– Disney Parks (@DisneyParks) December 2, 2021
Speaking of friction points, Walt Disney World announced via social media that parking trams will be returning to Magic Kingdom Park in December 2021 and the other three theme parks “throughout 2022!”
On the one hand, it’s good to see the long overdue return of parking lot trams to the Transportation and Ticket Center. That walk can be brutal on busy days and weekends, and that has been the case since at least this spring when crowds started picking up. Parking trams are definitely needed at the TTC more than anywhere else at Walt Disney World, so that’s a good place to start.
On the other hand, throughout 2022 is a concerning word choice. It’s not “early 2022” or “Spring 2022.” Heck, even just an “in the new year!” might’ve been better than throughout, which suggests it could be a more drawn out process.
I don’t know what can be written here that hasn’t already been said. The bottom line is that it’s inexcusable that Walt Disney World still hasn’t brought back the trams and the company should be embarrassed by the negative media attention, and being made a punchline on late night shows.
On multiple occasions since spring, there have been credible rumors of the parking lot trams’ return, and Cast Members were training on the trams before ultimately being reassigned. I’d love to know the full story behind those abandoned plans. Was it cost cutting? Not enough drivers? A deliberate decision to pad sales of preferred parking?
We’ve been fairly forgiving of Disney’s slow restart during the phased reopening, recognizing that labor shortages and supply chain disruptions are impacting businesses around the country–not just Disney. We know that a lot of Walt Disney World’s moves (or lack thereof) are largely beyond their control and a symptom of larger, far-reaching problems.
In other situations, Disney is pretty transparent about using current circumstances as a pretext for cuts they’ve long desired to make or feel they can get away with in the short term. It’s unclear where the lack of trams falls. On its face, it sure seems like a cost-cutting situation, but I also know there’s a shortage of CDL drivers in Central Florida.
On top of that, the grueling TTC walk is an awful first and last impression, so the tram hiatus doesn’t seem like a savvy move from a guest satisfaction perspective. But that also hasn’t stopped plenty of recent cuts or decisions, many of which are focused disproportionately on the short term.
Consequently, we’re disinclined to give Walt Disney World the benefit of the doubt on things like parking lot trams being absent for so long. If there were a good justification for this, the company could’ve indicated as much in an update or one of Josh D’Amaro’s interviews with business publications (if discussing logistics and business headwinds were deemed too wonkish for a guest-facing update).
Perhaps I’m in the minority with this sentiment, but I’d love if Walt Disney World communicated with me as if I’m an adult–or at least a teenager. If you can afford a multi-thousand dollar vacation or Annual Pass, there’s about a 0% chance you’re 8 years old; it thus strikes me as odd for that to be the intended audience of the company’s communications. I’m not asking for total transparency or bluntness, but a little more of that might go a long way in setting expectations–and even having consumers be more receptive to otherwise unpopular decisions, changes, or circumstances.

We just spent a month in the Orlando area, visiting WDW nearly every day. The lack of trams was our #1 pet peeve, so I was excited to read “Trams Returning” in your headline. But when I saw that it was just to the TTC, I got angry all over again. While the TTC certainly needs trams more than anywhere else, there’s no excuse for not bringing them back to all the parks. If I had to choose the reason for the delay, I’d say that Disney wants to milk money out of guests for preferred parking for as long as possible. By the last week of our stay, we stopped going to the Magic Kingdom altogether because we couldn’t face the long walk (and we’re too cheap to pay for preferred parking). To get to Epcot we’d park at Hollywood Studios and take the Skyliner from there; it saved us a few steps, especially if we wanted to go directly to the World Showcase.
So even during Xmas season, presumably the busiest time since the reopening we get mediocre park hours. Still paying pre-pandemic prices and not getting pre-pandemic hours. You can add that to your “inexcusable” list IMO.
Right now I think I am over the price gouging that Disney is doing at every turn.
I love your posts and will keep reading but for right now they are in it to squeeze every last nickel out of people. I am not trying to be a scrooge but when I was going to the Magical Place on Earth it was at least palatable, now if I take a vacation to Disney I will worry the whole time about how much it has cost me.
Has Mouse Gear Lite (Creations) been stocked up or does it still look like an outlet mall wasteland like it did on the 50th week? It was, in a word, horrible. I’d be generous in saying it had 5% of what MG carried.
Great news on the trams! But you know what’s much longer overdue to return? The MK RR! No, the Tron construction excuse is pathetic and weak on all counts. I can maybe see your earlier comment about it being a cost saving measure, but there’s simply not that much maintenance or operating cost there. Its running would also alleviate some of the crowding, as many of us use it to take a nice break from walking and get to the other side of the park.
@Brenda: yep, I’d still be tired and scared but I was expecting much better security at night. I also closed at a mall and the security guys would drive us to our cars after close. And not paying $25 for parking would go a bit towards ameliorating some of the insult heaped onto all of us by the ever growing Disney greed. Trams would be much more appreciated of course! But saving $250 for my 10 days at Disney could be better spent on food in the parks! Ahhh… give me back the days of free parking with trams and lower crowds! Those were the days!!
And I’m not advocating riots, but I do think anyone upset with Disney should voice their complaints with Guest Services as I did each morning after those long walks. I do warn you though that some CMs didn’t seem to care, though a few did. One snarky CM even went so far as to shrug and say that “although people complain they still keep coming to WDW”. I guess she missed my point or missed some training on customer service etiquette. So as my wisened Auntie used to say … “and there ya go…now you’ve got it…so how do you like them apples”?!? Hrumpf! As much as companies claim they want customer feedback, it usually doesn’t make things better, but I think we all should still try to make the world a better place.
I truly question the decision making abilities of some of Disney’s team. Specifically, 1) with the early park closures, there is less time to shop the stores. Why wouldn’t they add an extra hour to Disney springs to allow Guest time to do shopping?
2) we used to stay off property when I was raising my family because Disney resorts were Cost prohibitive. I would shop until I dropped in the parks, knowing the tram was awaiting to return me to our vehicle. It never made sense to take them away because families are walking in a Parking lot with their children and don’t want to
Carry extra packages. Bringing back the trams can’t be a day to soon! 3) I am a huge Disney fan, passholder, and can talk Disney to anyone who will listen, however, I personally know two dozen or so families who are boycotting Disney for various reasons, all of them seem to be over Disney’s aggressive financial mistakes, But the greatest concern is the loss of the magical express. I don’t believe Disney is doing their homework as well as they used to in an effort to spread Disney magic to all financial classes. I recently took a passholder survey and I don’t feel they asked the right questions to help them better understand How they could grow their business and recognize all financial classes.
@DJ
You had my empathy till the end. Used to work in a mall till closing. Had to park in a small dark lot & walk alone late.
Then you said ‘STOP CHARGING FOR PARKING’. Even if parking was free you’d still have to walk the same distance, in the same conditions, with the same alligator ( signs).
But if it was free it wouldn’t scare you? Or be so tiring? 😉
What gets me about Disney is they never admit they made a mistake! I was upset with the release of the candlelight processional packages which was a fiasco. I emailed and relayed my bad experience and said to them clearly you had an IT issue but they would not even admit there was an issue. I got the old “we’re sorry we didn’t meet your expectations” all I really wanted was we messed that up but they are incapable of doing that!
Disney needs to do MORE about the lack of trams! This is still UNacceptable, and just adding insult to injury after paying $25 each day! I was SO exhausted after closing down each park every evening, that the VERY LONG walk back to the car made me cry! And it was EXTREMELY insecure and frightening being by myself and walking through the dark parking lots with no other guests nor security around and particularly disturbing going past the ditches/canals in darkness and reading the posted signs warning of alligators! Constantly looking over my shoulder as I hobbled to my lonely waiting car at the far ends of the lots was almost too much to bear! Come on Disney…enough with the money grabs already! IF you can have Skyliner, boats, buses, and monorails running, then SURELY you can provide trams … or better yet, just STOP CHARGING FOR PARKING!! I can’t imagine the meltdowns of the masses this month when they realize how FAR they’ll have to walk from/to the lots!! Revolts ensue!!!
That’s good. I had to learn about “medical overflow lots” while the trams were down because I can’t walk super far to the gates but don’t have a placard.
This was after a CM had to drive me back to my car. I think there are a lot of people who fall into that “not disabled, but need the trams to run” category.
Really wish we’d give information on when the dining plan is returning.
My family is bringing me for my 60th Birthday since it is the same place I celebrated Walt Disney World’s opening and one of our favorite spots over the past 50 years as kids and a family. Would be great to have the whole experience again.
To me, the lack of trams at DLR is even worse than at WDW. Having to walk the length of the tram path from Mickey & Friends to the front gates is a real slap in the face, and contributes to a horrible arrival experience at the resort.
Totally agree on that walk being much worse.
It’s also my understanding that the circumstances there are dramatically different, with those trams sustaining millions of dollars worth of damage during the closure. Not to make excuses for Disneyland, as I’m sure there’s some foot-dragging there, but the California parks were closed a lot longer than Walt Disney World. The Florida parks have been caught flat-footed time and time again in the last year for no good reason, whereas DLR has gotten things moving in a hurry–for the most part.
There are still no dates for Blizzard Beach posted for after December 25th. Do you have any ideas why that might be. We have a trip mid January, and looks like there might be no water park open when we go?
No water park at all is one possibility, the other is that Typhoon Lagoon will reopen then and Blizzard Beach will go down for maintenance. I haven’t heard anything credible recently about those plans.
I am very disappointed to learn that ZOMBIES is not, in fact, THE Zombies. I was really looking forward to seeing elderly rock musicians trying to stop Maleficent, perhaps with the help of kids in the park who have no idea who these old guys are.
Disney really needs to put together a Christmas special in which ZOMBIES team up with The Zombies and zombies to fight Maleficent. It’s what the people want.
Let’s get to something important.. although trams is a good start!
What about tables of wonderland. We live an hour from the part. Don’t di many rides.. we Do shows and do wonderful lunches.. 1-1 1/2.. hours.. then go home! So ready to enjoy a discount off of a glass wine!
I have no inside information, but I’d imagine Tables in Wonderland will be one of the last things to return, and only after restaurant capacity is back at 100%, pent-up demand has died down, and the Disney Dining Plan is back. No reason to offer a discount if Disney is filling up tables without it.
Looks fine now Tom.
Just had to close out and restart from email.
Thanks.
Now it’s fixed!
Thought garbled print under pics, last part of article was my phone issue-nope. Did it get fixed Tom?
I’m more concerned by the fact it’s just the TTC! confirmed as returning! I don’t know why they bothered building a large new tram turning area at Epcot. I’d actually be fine if they scrapped them, but in that case they need a good walking route.
This topic appears to have media cut-through, so I have to wonder about the business savvy of this particular cut.
Tom, check this post. Last half has all the paragraphs on one line, each.
That was really weird, but it should be working properly now. (At least, I hope so!)
