Disney World’s Fast-Selling $5 Character Cup Charms Could Be the Next Big Merchandise Craze

Walt Disney World’s hottest merchandise line right now is the customizable character charms for refillable mugs. These new accessories wedge into the handle of cups, and solve a problem for larger families or offer a bit of fun personality. Here are full details, along with why you might have difficulty finding these popular, sometimes sold out add-ons.

As basic background, Walt Disney World sells refillable mugs at resort hotel food courts that offer unlimited refills. The refillable mug system is pretty simple: you buy the mug or have it provided to you via the Disney Dining Plan and then are entitled to unlimited refills at the Walt Disney World hotels for the duration of your stay.

Self-serve beverage stations are available at select quick-service restaurants located in Walt Disney World theme parks and resort hotels. Refillable mugs at Walt Disney World currently cost $22.99 for the length of stay. I know what you’re thinking: “that’s just too darned cheap, how can I spend more money on my Diet Coke addiction?!” In response, Walt Disney World said, “hold my soda” and launched a new accessory for Cool Kids’ Summer.

These new character handle accessories clip onto your cup’s handle, adding a small character touch to your refillable mug. They cost $4.99 per two-sided set, and are available at select resorts and in limited quantities (more on this in a minute).

Each accessory is a surfboard-shaped charm that slides onto the mug’s handle. The current lineup features the following Pixar characters:

  • Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc.
  • Sulley from Monsters, Inc.
  • Joy from Inside Out
  • Jessie from Toy Story
  • Woody from Toy Story

The charms are sold separately from the mug itself, so you can mix and match colors and characters to build a mug that fits your style. The logic, as we understand it, is so that guests can use their handle character charms to differentiate between their mug and those of others in their family or party.

According to Walt Disney World, these character handles are currently only available at the following hotels:

  • Landscape of Flavors and Ink & Paint (Disney’s Art of Animation Resort)
  • Riverside Mill Food Court (Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside)
  • Centertown Market (Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort)
  • Everything POP Shopping & Dining (Disney’s Pop Century Resort)
  • Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory (Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter)

Walt Disney World indicates that these character handles are only available “while supplies last.” Here are official photos they released of the handles:

The limited availability is really worth underscoring.

These rolled out at the start of Cool Kids’ Summer (I actually first saw them shortly before the event began over Memorial Day weekend), which is why they’re only being sold at the list of resorts above and not the All Stars, Coronado Springs, or any Deluxe Resorts. The above list is the same as the Cool Kids’ Summer resorts, plus French Quarter (which I assume is just a proximity thing).

I have stayed at 3 of these resorts since the start of Cool Kids’ Summer, and visited another. It has been my experience that these things are, somehow, flying off the shelves. I’ve been waiting to cover this until I was able to capture a photo of all of the styles in a single image, which I didn’t anticipate being a challenge at the beginning of the summer. Admittedly, I also did not anticipate these character charms becoming “a thing.” I just figured they were a cute accessory that would get lost in an endless ocean of Walt Disney World merchandise.

Fast-forward to about a week and a half ago at Caribbean Beach Resort.

Finally, I see them all at Centertown Market! Unfortunately, I don’t have my real camera with me, but knowing what a challenge this has been already, I snap a few quick pics with my phone. The next day, I return and half of the designs are sold out.

By the time I checked out last week, they were once again completely sold out. Cast Members advised that they keep coming in and out of stock, so continue checking back. Here are close-up photos I did manage to snap:

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this high demand and/or limited inventory is the real reason why only a handful of resorts are stocking the character handle inserts. It’s also likely why Walt Disney World is saying they’re available while supplies last.

There’s no way they’re going to just stop selling these once Cool Kids’ Summer ends. This is a license to print money, so it’ll only expand. The handles will increase in price and more designs will become available.

My best guess is that Walt Disney World rolled these handles out as a test product, under-anticipating the degree of demand. They’re assuredly aware of the popularity of this product by now, and likely have ordered many, many more. I’d fully expect these to be well-stocked at every single resort food court before Christmas.

Frankly, I’m inclined to take that a step or three further. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this is the next big merchandise line for Walt Disney World, with a product strategy that mirrors MagicBands. I could see limited edition inserts, rare characters, resort-exclusives, seasonal offerings, and more.

Like MagicBands, there’s the potential for people to collect these, purchasing not just one for their favorite character, but many. The market is probably more limited by virtue of fewer off-site guests, locals or Annual Passholders purchasing these, since fewer of those demographics purchase refillable mugs in the first place. But maybe this changes that to some degree. Disney fans really love unique, customizable product lines. It’s catnip for collectors, of which there are many.

Of course, Disney has tried to create a little t of merchandise lines like that over the years, and few have found the success of MagicBands. I won’t pretend to understand what makes the character charms different, or uniquely appealing. Perhaps it’s because they’re “only” $5 and make for a cheap souvenir? Maybe there’s a viral TikTok I don’t know about? It’s possible people just really love personalizing things? Whatever the explanation, these seem to be a surprisingly huge hit.

That, or I’m overestimating the demand and this is really more a story of limited supply. I don’t think so–these seem pretty popular. They’re not something that interests me, so I won’t pretend to “get it.” Then again, I would’ve dropped $5 in a heartbeat if Figment were a featured character, so perhaps these are for me, and it’s just the character selection that’s not to my tastes.

What I suspect it comes down to is price, personalization, and proudly displaying “flair” of your favorite characters. When Disneyland first introduced the “wildly popular” customizable character headbands, there were long lines and they couldn’t keep them in stock. That went on for months. Same idea here, but with a lower barrier to entry thanks to the $5 price tag.

Honestly, you’ve kind of gotta hand it to Disney in finding new crazes to start and ways to upsell the upsell. The character headband is basically just attaching two tsum tsums to your head for no reason. This adds a character insert to a cup with the same characters already on it.

The purported reason for it existing–to differentiate refillable mugs–is one that’s already solved by them coming in different colors. If that’s insufficient, maybe mismatched lids? I don’t know. The new and unique ways they find to feed the merchandising machine never ceases to amaze me!

2026 WDW Character Mug

There’s also a new mug as of 2026, featuring fan-favorite Pixar characters. The mug design is by Jerrod Maruyama, who has created a variety of popular products. As you might notice, the visual style matches that of the character handle inserts.

The new mug comes with different colored handles and lids, with “Walt Disney World” in small red text against a blue background that’s punctuated by bubbles filled with characters that include Woody, Mike Wazowski, Mater, Lightning McQueen, Edna Mode, Sully, Boo, Jack-Jack, Carl, Russell, Dug, Jesse, Lotso, Nemo, Dory, Crush, Bing Bong, Sadness, Joy, Rex, Heimlich, Wall-E, and more.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of this design. Part of that is the cutesy characters style doesn’t do much for me (Mary Blair excepted). This art direction has become incredibly popular in the last decade, but just isn’t for me. To each their own. Jerrod is an incredibly talented artist, so it’s not a knock on him—just my personal preferences and tastes.

The bigger issue for me is that the Pixar design has nothing to do with Walt Disney World. If these were mugs being sold on Pixar Pier at DCA, that’d make sense. But to represent the entirety of Walt Disney World? I’m not a fan. Many of these characters aren’t represented in the parks at all, so this is really less a Walt Disney World mug and more a generic Pixar one.

As a fan of Walt Disney World as opposed to Pixar, I prefer merchandise that’s resort specific–uniquely Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, I haven’t spotted the “old” refillable mugs in the last couple of months, so it would appear those are out of production. (If you do see one and like it, I’d definitely recommend buying before it’s gone!)

The last iteration of Walt Disney World resort-specific mugs featured icons from all 4 parks, as well as several resort hotels, including the Skyliner, Spaceship Earth, Tower of Terror, Cinderella Castle, Tree of Life, Grand Floridian, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, Art of Animation, All Star Music, Port Orleans Riverside, Riviera and more.

They came in a variety of different lid and handle colors, and were not tied to any celebration or season. Walt Disney World has recently started rotating through refillable mug designs with greater frequency, so hopefully there’s another parks-specific design in 2027.

Prior to this, there was a similar style for Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary, followed by Disney100 mugs. These mugs have since been retired. It would seem like the current lifecycle for a refillable mug is about 2 years based on that, so perhaps we’ll have to wait until 2028 to get another Walt Disney World specific design.

WDW Refillable Mugs Pricing (Increase)

As noted above, refillable mugs at Walt Disney World currently cost $22.99 for the length of stay. The price last increased by $1 in October 2024, and changed at every counter service and food court menu.

The trend is a price increase on refillable mugs every other year, which would put the next increase in Fall 2026. It’s almost always mid-October, as that’s the start of Disney’s new fiscal year.

It’s also possible Walt Disney World has reached the breaking point on refillable mugs, and prices won’t go up again until 2027. I doubt that, as evidenced by the willingness of guests to pay an extra $5 to bling out their mugs. There are also more and more resorts with Coke Freestyle machines, and people seem willing to pay a premium for that. (Understandably so!)

It’s true that there’s only so much guests are willing to pay for ‘unlimited’ soda at their resorts, but it wouldn’t surprise us if that number is closer to $25 than it is $22–especially given that so many guests don’t pay for these mugs in the first place since they’re on the Disney Dining Plan. So who knows, maybe it’ll jump to $24.99 in Fall 2026! But for now, the current cost is $22.99 for refillable mugs at Walt Disney World.

  1. Oh man, that was my idea! I could be rich!
On our last big family trip my granddaughters and I made bracelets for everyone using basically croc charms for each family member that they could snap onto their cup to designate whose it was (or wear it as a bracelet.)

And I am bummed with the new style, hopefully it will have changed by our next big trip in March.
