Extended Evening Hours Moves from Magic Kingdom Likely for Rest of 2026
Extended Evening Hours switch away from Magic Kingdom in late Summer 2026. This could be an isolated occurrence, but based on past precedent, it’s likely a multi-month change that lasts through at least early January 2027. This post shares date(s), details, and strategy for taking advantage of the on-site perk for guests staying at higher-end hotels.
For those who are new to Walt Disney World vacation planning, Extended Evening Theme Park Hours is nighttime counterpart to Early Entry. There are several differences, most notably that guests staying at Value or Moderate Resorts are not eligible for Extended Evening Hours. But it’s not just the most expensive resorts–you can save money by renting DVC points or staying at the Swolphin and still be eligible if you want to hack ExEH.
Extended Evening Theme Park Hours has two types of resort eligibility, occurs two nights per week, is at two parks, and runs for two hours. It’s usually Monday at EPCOT and Wednesday at Magic Kingdom. See our Strategy Guide for Extended Evening Hours at Walt Disney World for more ins and outs of the nighttime Deluxe benefit.
When it comes to the latest updates, let’s start with the good news. Magic Kingdom is hosting Extended Evening Hours every Wednesday between now and August 19, 2026. This is technically the default, so not exactly stop the presses news, but it is notable since this is not what happened last summer.
Instead, Animal Kingdom took over Extended Evening Hours hosting duties for most of the summer. This schedule change started ahead of Disney Starlight Night Parade’s debut, and continued for most of July through early 2026. There were a handful of Magic Kingdom dates post-July, but not many.
Extra Late Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom
Our fear was that Starlight having two performances per evening on select nights in Summer 2026 would again cause this to happen. Due to later sunset times, the second Starlight is presented at 11 pm, which means that Extended Evening Hours would run from 11 pm to 1 am on those nights. Instead of having those rare extra late hours, we worried that Walt Disney World simply shift ExEH to Animal Kingdom.
Thankfully, they are not! There are already several dates that have 11 pm to 1 am Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom already, including June 24, 2026 and July 8, 2026.
With rolling extensions of regular park hours, more dates in July will likely have that schedule going forward. This is very good news for guests visiting in the next couple of months! Given the guest complaints about Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom last summer, this isn’t completely surprising, either.
Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom
The latest development is that Walt Disney World has updated the calendar reflecting that Extended Evening Hours moves from Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
The move has not yet been announced by Walt Disney World, but you can see the change via the My Disney Experience app. August 30, 2026 is currently the latest the calendar goes, so any discussion of dates beyond then should be treated as speculative.
However, there is no reason to believe this is a one-off anomaly. To the contrary, it comports with the cadence of scheduling shifts for Extended Evening Hours in previous years. Here’s what to expect going forward in September 2026 through early January 2027 as a result…
Party Season Schedule Shift
In each of the past several years, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom have taken over hosting duties from Magic Kingdom each year during Party Season. This occurs because of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, which begins in August and kicks into high gear in September.
Normally, Extended Evening Hours moves to Disney’s Hollywood Studios if Magic Kingdom has scheduling conflicts. Animal Kingdom is typically the backup to DHS, taking over if that park is hosting parties.
That usually happens in November and December with the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party. Now, it’s occurring due to After Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which runs most Wednesday nights through September 2, 2026. (There is a final After Hours at DHS on Saturday, September 12, 2026.) This means that Animal Kingdom takes over as the backup to DHS on the Wednesdays with scheduling conflicts.
Extended Evening Hours Likely at DHS in Fall 2026
In all likelihood, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will host Extended Evening Hours on Wednesdays between September 9 or 16, 2026 and late October 2026, with Animal Kingdom taking over starting on November 4, 2026 due to the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party that’s hosted at DHS in November and December. From then until early 2027, Animal Kingdom will likely host the second Extended Evening Hours of the week.
In other words, even though the schedule is not yet published that far out, you should plan for Magic Kingdom to not host Extended Evening Hours between roughly August 26, 2026 and January 6, 2027. If it does, consider yourself lucky!
This is more or less consistent with last year. It’s also worth noting that there were some schedule quirks around Labor Day, which is also typical. Last year, Magic Kingdom hosted Extended Evening Hours one final time on September 3rd, which was the Wednesday after Labor Day. Following that, DHS took over hosting duties.
Labor Day Anomalies
The timing of Labor Day is later this year, meaning it’s possible for Magic Kingdom to host Extended Evening Hours once or twice more, on September 2 and/or September 9, 2026. It is not necessarily our expectation that this happens given the density of MNSSHP dates, and the fact that ExEH is already switching over to DAK on August 26, 2026.
Another possibility is DHS hosting Extended Evening Hours on the Friday before Labor Day (September 4, 2026), which has also happened in the past.
Either way, we’ll find out soon about early to mid-September. Just a heads up for now that you should be prepared for no Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom starting August 26th and continuing through January 6, 2027, and be pleasantly surprised if there’s a date or two when it does happen in early September.
Extended “Evening” Hours at DAK
Currently, Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is scheduled from 6 pm to 8 pm. Meaning it will conclude before sunset. Even if regular hours are extended, ExEH will likely occur 7 pm to 9 pm, which is not so “evening” after all. On the upside, plenty of time to park hop to Magic Kingdom for Disney Starlight Night Parade!
This is not to complain about Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. To the contrary, we love DAK after dark. The problem, as noted above, is that ExEH during summer season does not happen after dark due to later sunsets. Once November rolls around, Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is fantastic because it actually occurs in the evenings. Pandora – World of Avatar looks great at night, and takes on a totally different atmosphere that’s surprisingly serene.
Animal Kingdom has another issue, which is its inability to absorb crowds. This is always true, which is why there’s a ‘tipping point’ when DAK goes from totally manageable to insanely crowded, without much of a moderately busy in-between. Such is the nature of a limited ride roster, which is down one more attraction this year due to DINOSAUR being reimagined into Indiana Jones Adventure.
Consequently, DAK has the most limited ride roster by far during ExEH: Avatar Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest, Na’vi River Journey, and Zootopia: Better Zoogether. That’s it. Four attractions. Maybe they’ll add Kali River Rapids this year?
Conquering Flight of Passage Crowds
As far as strategy goes, Avatar Flight of Passage is the main substantive draw of Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Experiencing it with a minimal wait is a huge selling point of the perk; guests recognize this, seeing ExEH as an alternative to paying for Lightning Lane Single Pass.
Due to this, Flight of Passage will be busy at the start of Extended Evening Hours. Based on our past experience during special events and evenings at Animal Kingdom, our advice would be to save Flight of Passage until the end of the night. We’ve done events during which Flight of Passage posts a 60-90 minute wait at the start and is a walk-on towards the end.
As odd as this might sound, there’s a good reason for the fall-off: Flight of Passage’s pre-show. If you’ve only experienced the attraction a handful of times, the awkward and rambling pre-show might strike you as mildly annoying. Try experiencing that same pre-show 4 consecutive times and you’ll find it interminably long and bordering on torture (talk about the ultimate first-world hyperbole!).
This is precisely why the line will drop off sharply for Avatar Flight of Passage during the course of Extended Evening Hours. People will get their fill at the beginning of the event, and not do it again either due to the long line they encountered the first time, the long pre-show, or both.
Accordingly, the best approach to Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is starting in Asia and doing Expedition Everest, potentially repeatedly. The total ride experience there is significantly shorter and it should have a minimal wait. You could probably do Expedition Everest a few times in short order if your body is up to it.
From there, doing Zootopia: Better Zoogether makes sense, I guess, before ending the night in Pandora – World of Avatar where you should be able to knock out both Na’vi River Journey and Avatar Flight of Passage.
Our rationale for this strategy is that everyone is going to head to Pandora first. It’s the main draw, and why 95% of people are going to attend Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Not only will ExEH guests flock to Pandora, but day guests will still be there at the start.
One downside to Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is that there’s only so much to do. Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: Big Blue & Beyond, and Feathered Friends in Flight all end operations in the late afternoon.
Accordingly, we’d recommend arriving a few hours early, and allocating that time to other attractions, stage shows, and atmospheric entertainment that won’t be open or performed during Extended Evening Hours. During the event, you’re necessarily going to be repeating attractions, as so few are open.
The other downside, at least during the August and potential September Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is that it’s still broad daylight out. DAK is great for ExEH in November and December. We love doing it then! After doing Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom once last summer, I was good on it. I would’ve rather (and did, on future dates) experienced regular 11 pm closing at Magic Kingdom and a few hours of actual night during the hottest days of the year.
