Extended Evening Hours Returns to Everyone’s Least Favorite Option at Disney World
Walt Disney World continues to switch up the schedule of parks hosting Extended Evening Hours, moving away from Magic Kingdom. The latest development is that ExEH is unexpectedly returning to Animal Kingdom, “everyone’s” least-favorite place for the perk, at least this time of year. This covers dates & details, plus problems with the event at DAK and when ExEH is actually great at the 4th gate!
As basic background, Extended Evening Hours (ExEH) is the nighttime counterpart to Early Theme Park Entry. There are several differences, most notably that guests staying at Value or Moderate Resorts are not eligible for Extended Evening Hours. But it’s not just the most expensive resorts–you can save money by renting DVC points or staying at the Swolphin and still be eligible if you want to hack ExEH.
Extended Evening Theme Park Hours has two types of resort eligibility, occurs two nights per week, is at two parks, and runs for two hours. When it comes to the latest updates, let’s start with the good news. Magic Kingdom is hosting Extended Evening Hours every Wednesday between now and August 19, 2026. Following that, Walt Disney World managed to squeeze one more ExEH at MK in on September 9, 2026. That’s only three more weeks at this point, but it’s not nothing–better than last year!
The bad news is that, after September 9th, it is a near certainty that Magic Kingdom won’t host Extended Evening Hours again this year. Although the calendar doesn’t reflect any dates past October, the extra hours will likely return to Magic Kingdom in the second week of January 2027. Maybe there’s another week in early November when they can squeeze in one last Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom this year, but we doubt it.
Here’s a rundown on all of the upcoming changes to Extended Evening Hours in Fall 2026…
Party Season Schedule Shift
If you’re wondering about the “why” of Magic Kingdom not hosting ExEH going forward, it’s due to Party Season. In each of the past several years, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom have taken over hosting duties once Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party kicks into high gear.
Magic Kingdom is already closing early multiple nights per week, and Disney needs to move ExEH to another park to help redistribute crowds and have the latitude to extend Magic Kingdom’s closing time for regular park guests.
Normally, Extended Evening Hours moves to Disney’s Hollywood Studios if Magic Kingdom has scheduling conflicts. Animal Kingdom is typically the backup to DHS, taking over if that park is hosting parties.
That usually happens in November and December with the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party. Now, it’s occurring due to After Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which runs most Wednesday nights through September 2, 2026. (There is a final After Hours at DHS on Saturday, September 12, 2026.)
This means that Animal Kingdom takes over as the backup to DHS on the Wednesdays with scheduling conflicts, which is precisely why ExEH is at DAK on August 26 and September 2, 2026.
Extended Evening Hours Return to DHS in Fall 2026
The good news is that Walt Disney World has added Extended Evening Hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on September 16, 2026 from 9 pm to 11 pm. Extended Evening Hours will continue at DHS on the following dates:
- September 23, 2026
- September 30, 2026
- October 7, 2026
- October 14, 2026
Extended Evening Hours is fantastic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We would argue that it’s the #2 park for the perk, behind only Magic Kingdom. EPCOT is okay, but gets dragged down by distances between headliners eating up too much event time. Animal Kingdom is…well, we’ll discuss that in a minute.
We previously predicted this would continue through late October 2026, with Animal Kingdom taking over starting on November 4, 2026 due to the Jollywood Nights Christmas Party at DHS.
From early November 2026 until early 2027, Animal Kingdom will likely host the second Extended Evening Hours of the week. That is what has happened in each of the last few years. Well, the shift might be coming even earlier in Fall 2026…
Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom, Again.
Looking forward past those two August and September dates, Animal Kingdom hosts Extended Evening Hours on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. This is currently as far out as the calendar goes, so we do not know what happens after this.
The reason WDW has DAK taking over ExEH from DHS on that date is simple (we love our acronyms here): Disney’s Hollywood Studios is closing at 5 pm on October 20th. This means Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is being used strategically. It’s a shiny object to help redistribute crowds away from Magic Kingdom and EPCOT on that date during Fall Break, which would otherwise see an influx of guests due to DHS being dead that day.
It also means that Disney’s Hollywood Studios will almost assuredly see a sharp spike in crowds on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Not wanting to exacerbate that–and wanting the option to extend normal park hours until 10 pm–Walt Disney World is electing against having Extended Evening Hours at DHS on that date. Bad news for Deluxe Resort guests, good for everyone else.
Although the calendar doesn’t officially extend to Wednesday, October 21, 2026 yet, we’re confident there won’t be Extended Evening Hours anywhere on that date. It’s possible they’ll be added Friday, October 23, 2026 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but we’d bet against that.
The better question is whether Walt Disney World bothers adding another one-off ExEH at DHS the following Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Or maybe even that date plus another squeeze in on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
We think the first date is highly likely, whereas the second is about 60/40 against. Last year, DAK took over ExEH for the balance of the year on November 5th. We’re not sure that was strictly necessary, so November 4, 2026 might fly in the face of precedent.
It’s our understanding that Disney receives a lot of guest complaints about Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom, and it’s clearly the 4th place park for the perk this time of year…and for good reason!
Rides Open for Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom
Here’s the eligible attraction roster for Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom:
- Avatar Flight of Passage
- Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
- Na’vi River Journey
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
That’s it. Four attractions. Maybe they’ll add Kali River Rapids this year? Probably not.
This ride roster is one obvious issue with Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. I literally just did Early Entry at DAK yesterday to check out the new procedures and (spoiler alert), it was incredibly underwhelming. Much worse than it was even a year ago, and I expect the same to be true of Extended Evening Hours. I don’t intend to find out. At least, not during any of the evenings from now through October 2026.
Other Issue with Extra “Evening” Hours at DAK
Currently, Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is scheduled from 6 pm to 8 pm on October 20, 2026. Meaning sunset will occur at the halfway point of ExEH (around 6:50 pm) and it’ll be dark right around the tail end of the event. Even if regular hours are extended, ExEH will likely occur 7 pm to 9 pm, which is barely “evening.”
That’s not quite as bad as the summer months when Animal Kingdom has hosted ExEH and the event has ended before sunset, which is presumably one of the big drivers of guest complaints about the perk being offered at Animal Kingdom. However, it’s still not great!
A big part of the appeal of Extended Evening Hours is the notion that you’re getting late nights in one of the parks, and this still won’t feel like that. Even if park hours are extended, it’s a near-certainty that Magic Kingdom will close to day guests three full hours after ExEH at DAK ends on October 20, 2026.
Animal Kingdom has another issue, which is its inability to absorb crowds. This is always true, which is why there’s a ‘tipping point’ when DAK goes from totally manageable to crowded, without much of a moderately busy middle ground.
Such is the nature of a limited ride roster, which is down one more attraction this year due to DINOSAUR being reimagined into Indiana Jones Adventure. With only 4 attractions open for Extended Evening Hours, that is not a lot of crowd-absorbing capacity. It’s entirely possible lines will be longer at the start of ExEH than they’ll be that same day at 5 pm.
This was a lesson that was reinforced for me during Early Entry at Animal Kingdom on what was otherwise not a particularly busy day. It wasn’t downright bad, just so we’re clear, but I walked away with the feeling that I could’ve slept in and had just as fruitful of a day. My suspicion is that it’ll be a similar story with ExEH for the next few months, especially if DHS closing earlier on October 20th pushes people towards DAK.
Good Time to Do ExEH at DAK
Once Animal Kingdom takes over ExEH hosting duties in November and December, the extra hours will be entirely after sunset due to Daylight Saving Time ending on November 1, 2026. At that point, the sunset time will be around 5:30 pm, as opposed to the current 8:30 pm.
We love DAK after dark. It’s something many Walt Disney World fans, even longtime ones, have never experienced. Like the other parks, Animal Kingdom is something special at night. It has the same ‘heightened senses’ vibe as the other parks, but with the added wrinkle of the animals. Well, not so much the animals being exhibited, but the insects. They add serene surround sound to the experience, which otherwise can feel empty and spooky because the park is so devoid of guests. You also might get “lucky” and see a rat scurrying around.
Once November rolls around, Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is great because it actually occurs in the evenings. Pandora – World of Avatar looks stunning at night, and takes on a totally different atmosphere that’s otherworldly.
Then there’s Christmas, highlighted by the Discovery Island luminaries and other lights. Extended Evening Hours dates after November 13, 2026 are downright fantastic because these displays look brilliant. (In all likelihood, the luminaries will be up by November 4, 2026.) We love Animal Kingdom at Christmas, and that plus Pandora after dark gives DAK a lot of appeal, even with the limited ride roster. Just be sure to arrive early enough to catch the final set of Merry Menagerie!
Conquering Crowds
As far as strategy goes, Avatar Flight of Passage is the main substantive draw of Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Experiencing it with a minimal wait is a huge selling point of the perk; guests recognize this, seeing ExEH as an alternative to paying for Lightning Lane Single Pass.
Due to this, Flight of Passage will be busy at the start of Extended Evening Hours. Based on our past experience during special events and evenings at Animal Kingdom, our advice would be to save Flight of Passage until the end of the night. We’ve done events during which Flight of Passage posts a 60-90 minute wait at the start and is a walk-on towards the end.
After waiting that long once, most guests will get their fill of Flight of Passage and move on to other areas of the park. The interminably long pre-show also discourages re-rides.
Accordingly, the best approach to Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is starting in Asia and doing Expedition Everest, potentially repeatedly. The total ride experience there is significantly shorter and it should have a minimal wait. You could probably do Expedition Everest a few times in short order if your body is up to it.
From there, doing Zootopia: Better Zoogether makes sense, I guess, before ending the night in Pandora – World of Avatar where you should be able to knock out both Na’vi River Journey and Avatar Flight of Passage.
Our rationale for this strategy is that everyone is going to head to Pandora first. It’s the main draw, and why 95% of people are going to attend Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Not only will ExEH guests flock to Pandora, but day guests will still be there at the start.
One downside to Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom is that there’s only so much to do. Kilimanjaro Safaris, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: Big Blue & Beyond, and Feathered Friends in Flight all end operations in the late afternoon.
Accordingly, we’d recommend arriving a few hours early, and allocating that time to other attractions, stage shows, and atmospheric entertainment that won’t be open or performed during Extended Evening Hours. During the event, you’re likely going to be repeating attractions, as so few are open.
Another decent option is doing Avatar Flight of Passage about an hour before park closing. Day guests will already be departing, and those Park Hopping to DAK specifically for ExEH won’t be there quite yet. It should be a sweet spot. That’ll also give you more time to just enjoy strolling around once darkness descends on the park, and that’s truly our favorite way to spend Extended Evening Hours at Animal Kingdom. Not doing anything at all, just enjoying the ambiance!
