Disney Teases Luke Skywalker Coming to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge!

Luke Skywalker will begin making appearances in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2025. This shares the official news about the meet & greet character coming to Disneyland and (hopefully) Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, plus other commentary about the evolution of Star Wars land and why this is a much more significant change than it might appear on its face.

Let’s start by discussing the gradual ‘erosion’ of the stringent story standards for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This was first broached back in 2022, when Imagineer Scott Trowbridge explained how storytelling would evolve in the land with the introduction of new characters: “While we as visitors may be able to experience different stories throughout Star Wars history, the characters on Batuu can not. They will remain in their specific story and timeline and won’t intersect with other characters or stories that would not be appropriate for them.”

Since then, there’s been a steady stream of new characters into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, including Mandalorian and Baby Yoda at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, as well as Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, Sabine Wren, and Ahsoka at Disneyland. There also have been a handful of characters out exclusively during special events. I spotted General Hera Syndulla during DVC Moonlight Magic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and it’s my understanding that others have appeared during Star Wars Nite at Disneyland.

As a general rule, Disneyland has seen many more characters in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge than Walt Disney World. In addition to the above discrepancies, the BDX “Duckling Droids” appeared last year during Season of the Force, and there have been a multitude of little ways the land has been plussed and made to feel more alive in California.

There have been a lot of excuses/explanations for this over the years, starting with Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser imposing stringent story rules at Walt Disney World. But that’s been closed for over a year, so I’m slightly skeptical that a bunch of offices in space are dictating anything in terms of characters within the adjacent land.

A more plausible explanation is that the Imagineering and Lucasfilm teams that are continuing to develop new creative concepts for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge are California-based. It’s easier for them to test characters or have the appropriate support technical staff for the BDX Droids, for example, at Disneyland. It’s a short drive rather than a cross-country flight.

Along with that, Walt Disney World leadership is notoriously-averse to limited time entertainment and characters, even when funded by the studio or streaming marketing budgets. There are several reasons for this, some of which actually are reasonable. We’ve been down that road before, though, so let’s cut to the chase with the debut of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge:

Disney Parks teased Luke Skywalker’s arrival in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with a video on Twitter of the character and R2-D2 in front of the Millennium Falcon at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The post was simply captioned: “A Jedi… like his father before him.”

Even with just that, we could conclude that Luke Skywalker is coming to at least one of the Star Wars lands. Disney knows even this short and sweet video will draw endless speculation, and they aren’t so cruel as to tease us like that.

However, Disney’s reply makes this clearer: “Incoming transmission with more details expected 2.10.25 #SeasonOfTheForce #Disneyland.”

This suggests full details will be announced February 10, 2025 and that the Luke character appearances will only be in California, as opposed to Walt Disney World. At least at first.

Season of the Force is the Star Wars celebration at Disneyland, running this year from March 28 through May 11, 2025. It starts during Spring Break and before DCA Food & Wine Festival concludes, running for May the Fourth, before coming to a conclusion during shoulder season. The following week–May 16, 2025–is the start of Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration.

Basically, Season of the Force is Disneyland’s springtime event that’s meant to serve as a stopgap to get fans to the park before the kickoff of the 70th. Although Spring Break will be busy as always, there are weeks in April and May that are expected to be slower. This Star Wars event should help draw locals and fans to the parks during the downtime.

It’s worth noting that Luke Skywalker has never appeared in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The video depicts the character in his black Jedi garb with a black glove. It suggests a young version of the character from the time period as “The Mandalorian,” as opposed to an older Luke.

If this is a young Luke Skywalker, it would be the biggest breaking of the sacred timeline of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to date. The land is supposedly set between Episodes 8 and 9 of the sequel trilogy, when Luke is an old man. “The Mandalorian” is set after the events of Episode 6. Although Din Djarin and Baby Yoda have appeared in the land already, it’s plausible for them to be consistent with the timeline. Mando wears a helmet to conceal his face; Grogu is a baby of the yoda species, and they age oddly (scientifically speaking, of course).

There’s no plausible way young Luke appears in Batuu. That alone makes this hugely significant, much more so than the other characters who have appeared in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. It opens the door for Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo, OG Yoda, and every other character guests have been clamoring for since the land debuted.

Suffice to say, there’s likely more erosion of the sacred timeline to come. Disney announcing the New Mission featuring Mandalorian & Baby Yoda for Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run already increased the odds of storytelling inconsistencies at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland by 2026. The appearance of Luke Skywalker just accelerates this, albeit on a seasonal basis.

Turning to commentary, I have consistently and repeatedly been advocating for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to have a soft reboot.

I’m not going to rehash all of that here, but the bottom line is that I’d like to see Batuu be freed of its stringent storytelling rules and timeline, and use the setting of the land as a jumping off point for new adventures. (See Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Needs to Break the Rules for my take on all of that.) I’m most certainly not using “sacred timeline” as a term of reverence.

A soft reboot of the Star Wars land would be an opportunity to introduce beloved characters, use the catwalks in the land for mini-shows, and make the land more lived-in thanks to droids and additional performers. They could also doing a test run of a dinner show in Starcruiser at Walt Disney World for a future purpose-built venue in the land. All of this would breathe new life into the land and help it finally realize its full potential.

As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, I do not believe the Mando mission for Smugglers Run is the only Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge enhancement in the pipeline. I’ve heard nothing credible recently, but my expectation is that Imagineering will want a marketable ‘package’ of additions, improvements, regimaginings, etc. for 2026 to go along with that. This Luke Skywalker tease further reinforces that for me.

From my perspective, the question now is when Luke Skywalker will come to Walt Disney World, not if he will. It is inevitable that the character will, just like Mandalorian and Baby Yoda before him. Guest demand will be too strong, to the point that local leadership at Walt Disney World won’t have a choice.

It’s one thing with all of the Disneyland-exclusive characters who casual guests don’t even recognize (not ashamed to admit I had to Google a couple of them when we first saw them–cool as the character looks, I had never heard of General Hera Syndulla before that DVC party). It’s another entirely with Luke Skywalker and R2-D2. It would be crazy to not bring this duo to Walt Disney World.

The better question is whether Disney will want to play that card, so to speak, in Summer 2026 as part of the aforementioned (potential) marketing package of changes and additions that breathes new life into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Or will they want to pull that lever this summer, introducing incremental changes that draw locals to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

My guess is that Walt Disney World will wait. To whatever extent locals can be drawn out to DHS this summer, that’ll already happen with the two new stage shows. And Luke Skywalker, awesome as he is, isn’t enough alone to entice a large number of tourists to plan trips to Walt Disney World that they otherwise wouldn’t have taken. There’s just far more upside to waiting and having a suite of enhancements that have cumulative drawing power.

The calculus is different for Disneyland, where Luke Skywalker will be a big draw for locals from late March through mid-May. Not only that, but it gives the entertainment, Imagineering, and Lucasfilm a chance to test the character on a limited-time basis before a further rollout (presumably) next summer on both coasts. In my view, that’s the win-win approach.

Ultimately, I’m really pleased by this. I know diehard Star Wars fans who love the strict rules of Batuu will disagree, and that’s perfectly understandable. I love that Imagineering had the opportunity to take a big swing with Galaxy’s Edge, but over 5 years later, it still hasn’t quite lived up to its promise.

Breaking the rules could fix that, making Batuu a vibrant canvas for adventures that comport more closely with guest expectations. It could make the land feel alive and exciting, even if it becomes less coherent from a storytelling perspective. It could also make the land perform better with casual visitors, who hear “Star Wars land” and expect to be able to see Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, C-3PO, and other characters they actually know and care about.

The arrival of Luke Skywalker on Batuu reassures me that the other entries on my wishlist for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge also have a realistic chance of changing within the next 2 years. It’s also reassuring that maybe Disney is listening to guest feedback about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and acting accordingly. The land has so much unrealized potential, and a soft reboot of Galaxy’s Edge could be exactly the shot in the arm that’s needed.

  1. If they could add just a fraction of the Star Wars weekend vibe to Galaxy’s Edge it would be a huge plus. I can remember seeing (and the excitement of my kids at seeing) Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Queen Amidala, but probably our best interaction was the roaming random bounty hunters one of which had a face off with my teenage daughter. Just adding some of that energy would make GE so much better. Seeing R2-D2 would be a fantastic add to the mix!

    1. I would love to see Star Wars Weekends return, including the zaniness and fun character crossovers. Those would not be appropriate for SWGE (that would be pushing it too much), but they certainly could happen elsewhere in the rest of the park.

  2. “The land is supposedly set between Episodes 8 and 9 of the sequel trilogy, when Luke is an old man.“

We’ll Luke’s more like a Force-Ghost then, if you know what I mean.

    1. I was thinking the same thing, but per my long post below, “force ghost” would be my preference if Luke appears. Because they could probably figure out a cool way to do an holographic Mark Hamill who actually interacted with you (vs. the scenes /dialogue Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Frank Oz, etc., recorded for other attractions). And why couldn’t a force ghost appear anywhere, at any TIME? Solves sacred timeline issues regardless of when Galaxy’s edge is “set”.

  3. I find it interesting that despite picking lands that were well established in canon, both WWoHP sections at Universal do not have any truly ‘recognizable’ characters in their meet and greets (for copyright and character image reasons). But regardless, they continue to still feel more “alive” than SWGE to me. It honestly doesn’t feel like Star Wars to me with the lack of John Williams’ score and movement in the land. There need to be more action, and more characters could add to the live feeling that is still missing from making it distinctly Star Wars. It feels too easy to rebrand the land into a different science fiction-esque land.

  4. I could see a best of both worlds approach where only characters from the same time period are out in the land at the same time. This would avoid the jarring possibility of characters from completely different eras being forced to interact. For example, in the morning the current between Episode 8 and 9 characters like Rey, Kylo and Chewbacca can be out. In the afternoon, The Mandalorian, Boba Fett and Ashoka characters, which all take place in the same part of the timeline after Return of the Jedi, could be the ones out and about. This would also allow introducing the “classic era” characters as well out together at some point. This would allow stories from multiple eras without an awkward breaking of immersion.

  5. The current GE is a soulless, characterless void. Any improvement would be great. I would love to see a permanent Hyperspace Mountain style of coaster in the land.

  6. So, I am of the age of the original Star Wars trilogy. Grew up with the movies. I remember waiting for the weekend so I could see The Empire Strikes Back when it opened at the movies. Loved the three films. Then comes the next movies and I was so excited because my children were going to be the same age as I enjoyed the first three. Well, our family is not a fan. And that is fine. Many other people are. Then the next set of movies came out within the last 10 years. We enjoyed them. Some we do and some we don’t. I am sure other people feel similar. What I never understood was why would Disney not want to capitalize on ALL the Star Wars fans by including all the characters from all the movies? There is not an age demographic. Young and old love the old and new movies. Disney saying it’s wants to stay in a certain time period is too purist and to what point? The reason can’t be the Starcruiser experience. There wasn’t one in Disneyland. Not everyone could pay to experience it in Disney World either. Very confused to that reasoning. I am glad Disney is finally thinking things through for the fans of the movies. Most fans want all characters. Honestly, how cool would it be to see Luke and hopefully Darth Vader?

  7. I’m really surprised R2-D2 and C-3PO haven’t been doing regular appearances in Galaxy’s Edge this whole time! No idea why they only bring out C-3PO for Star Wars Nite, except maybe it’s too hard to get around in that costume.

  8. From a Mom perspective, I would love if you could meet Luke Skywalker and R2D2. I have 6 year old twin boys that just love Star Wars due to all of the spinoff Lego shows on Disney plus. We were in the parks last week and my son asked if R2D2 was there. A character meal with all the Star Wars favorites would be the ultimate dream for our family.

  9. Big Star Wars fan here I’m NOT a fan of Luke in Galaxy’s Edge, but not necessarily because of the sacred timeline. I do think it’d be weird to have, like, young Anakin and Darth Vader hanging out together, or Cassian Andor teaming up with Rey.

I could probably write 20 paragraphs on this, but fact that the land is not as vibrant/dynamic/ALIVE as it should be is not because of the lack of classic characters, but because the so many of the immersive and narrative elements were left out of the original vision. Rooftop battles (based on compelling stories that play out throughout the day), roaming droids, more LARPing options. Lots of stuff that ended up being realized in Galactic Starcruiser, and really the kind of things that make a Renaissance fair feel like a real “Olde English” town when executed to perfection.

And since both Smuggler’s Run and RotR are both buried deep inside show buildings, the land is missing some of the kinetic energy you get in most lands, like the sounds/screams from Slinky Dog Dash in Toy Story Land — or more notably something like the Astro Orbiter in Tomorrowland (which is an okay ride but pulls more than its weight in color/light/movement). That’s what the scrapped “Bantha ride” may have provided to some extent. I could also go on and on about about Jedi Training Academy, which is one of the best and most underrated attractions in Disney Parks history. It was amazing for the kid participants but also energizing for passerby. But what’s my point in all this? Introducing characters alone is not going to make this land what it should have been and still could be!

So why not Luke, for me? Mainly because he’s both 1) A live action “face” character in the films, and 2) So very iconic. I just can’t imagine someone looking/speaking enough like Mark Hamill to allow me to suspend my disbelief. Maybe a “hologram” version could work (actually voiced/played by Mark combined with AI), but I don’t need some 21-year-old theater major prancing around Batuu pretending he’s Luke freakin’ Skywalker from the original trilogy, or some 60-year-old theater instructor moonlighting as old, grizzled, bearded Luke. Character appearances / meet & greets work well with the Mandalorian, Boba Fett, Kylo Ren, Chewy, Darth Vader, R2D2/Threepio, etc. because they can appear pretty much the same as they are in the films. I’m not as sold on Rey (for the same reasons above) but her face isn’t quite as instantly memorable/iconic as Luke’s so I can get past that. But I really don’t want to see fake Luke, fake Han, fake Leia/Lando/Obi-Wan, etc. in this land. It would make it feel cheap and gimmicky to me, but maybe others disagree…

  10. If Mando and Grogu can appear on Batuu, why can’t Luke and R2? Both appear in the Mandalorian. Additionally, I assume Batuu has existed for a long time….so if Disney wanted to keep to their SW timelines, just have it so characters that belong in the same SW periods never appear along with Sequel Trilogy characters…I think they do something similar with their Disney characters…..

  11. As a DIE HARD Star Wars fan, I never took to GE. I imagine there’s more like me who walk through there feeling very ‘meh’ about the whole thing. There’s no connection, I don’t care about their new storyline because it has nothing to do with what Star Wars has already given us.

Also one thing – at least for me – that could make a HUGE difference is playing the original music. Hearing the soundtrack to the original trilogy while standing there in front of the Millenium Falcon would give me chills. I would stick around and meander through the land a lot more than I do now – which is just a quick pass-through as I make my way through the park.

    1. “Also one thing – at least for me – that could make a HUGE difference is playing the original music. Hearing the soundtrack to the original trilogy while standing there in front of the Millenium Falcon would give me chills.”

      100%.

If I were a betting man, I’d also put money on a sweeping score from John Williams by 2026. It’s a little thing that could instantly give the land more life.

    2. Hi Tom!
Thanks for posting this! As a die hard SW Fan, SWGE is always a must! I am a huge fan of this land and always look forward to eating a Ronto Wrap while enjoying watching the characters go by! Last April, we went to Disneyland the day before a scheduled Star Wars Nite. We sat eating Ronto Wraps and spotted Mando, Grogu, Boba Fett, and R2-D2 all within a 20 min snack break!! Seeing R2 live was more incredible than I imagined; to say we were pleasantly surprised was an understatement! Everyone loved R2 and everyone wanted a picture with him!! So I am glad they are bringing Luke to the land!
BTW, there is already a sweeping score by John Williams for Galaxy’s Edge! It’s called “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite” and they played it when the land opened back in Oct 2019 during a night time fire works exhibit over the Falcon when my brother and I were there…So you do not need to wait until 2026 =)

    3. Left this out of the too-long post I wrote above, but I totally agree about the music. Even if it’s just subtly or intermittently introduced at certain places (like the score swelling for 2 minutes, at regular 10-15 minute intervals). The Falcon is one such opportunity — chills, for sure!

  12. Was randomly walking in Galaxy’s Edge with my pre-teens when we turned a corner and there was the elusive Mando and Grogu right in front of us.

As always with those two, a crowd of 100+ people materialized within 60 seconds (not exaggerating), but because we were first, he started “talking” with us. Told my son that he looked like he was a good engineer, and asked my son if he wanted to go work for Mando. My kids were flabbergasted and smack in the middle of one of those Magic Disney Moments that you go there for – they will remember that one forever.

All that to say: Could not care one micron less about the Sacred Timeline. Frankly, am happy to see Disney realized the colossal error by trying to make G.E. devoid of the primo Star Wars IP that we all wanted to see anyway. They should go whoke hog: How awesome would it be to see in-person some spectacular dialogue and a lightsaber duel with Luke and Darth, no?

    1. You’re lucky!

For months, Mando and Baby Yoda were so popular that the crowd of 100+ (also no exaggeration) materialized before the duo even came out. By the time they entered the land, it was difficult to get a quality interaction. That’s improved a lot since; they’re still busy, but not totally overwhelmed. I enjoy watching the interactions from a distance because you can just tell this is the highlight of the land for so many guests.

An evening lightsaber duel between Luke and Darth on the catwalks would instantly be the most popular atmospheric entertainment in the park. It would also keep SWGE busy once the sun goes down. All of this stuff is such an obvious win for Disney that I’m surprised it’s taking so long. Then again, the words “Disney” and “fast-moving” don’t usually go together.

    2. I would come to DHS from the Netherlands explicitly to see a Luke and Darth Vader light saber battle in GE. It would be worth a trip and ticket.

  13. If you had never heard of Hera Syndulla before, you have a lot of Star Wars to watch! Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, Ahsoka, all great shows!

  14. The truth is Galaxy’s edge in both parks has been dying for quite some time. Less and less people are going into those areas of the park. Everyone knows why but disney has been to stubborn to admit it because if they did that would mean they were wrong. . Fans want the original characters. Always have. This little gimmick is just that. A little HOPE. But it is only for DL and sounds like only for the SW nights. Hopefully they will expand!

    1. Just to clarify: Season of the Force is a daily offering that’s included with regular admission.

If this were only happening during Star Wars Nites, it’d be a lot less noteworthy. Disneyland doing this on a daily basis is much more significant, even if it’s only for a limited time (for now).

  15. Strict adherence to the Star Wars storyline only makes sense to the seven (or so) earthlings who’ve made it their overarching reason for being. The rest of us want to see characters, visit attractions, eat cool food, and have as much Star Wars(ish) fun as we possibly can.

    1. “or so” doing some heavy lifting there! 😉

But your point is correct–it’s a vocal minority that cares about this. Everyone else just wants to have fun.

  16. This would be wonderful. Like you have said, guests don’t mind the discontinuity in Avenger’s Campus (I have a picture of Black Widow even though she’s dead), and I don’t think they will mind here. Seeing characters wander around really helps bring the land to life. As an aside, that pic reminds me of one of our favorite Disney experiences ever (and definitely favorite Star Wars experience) – we we’re lucky enough to have booked a trip during Star Wars Weekends and were in the park the day the real Luke Sky Walker was there. We even got to attend the panel session with Mark Hamill. The level of excitement in the room was off the charts since he had never participated before.

  17. It makes perfect sense for Disney to keep tweaking Galaxy’s Edge until it reaches its potential. I’m a casual Star Wars fan, having seen all of the movies when they originally came out, but still unable to keep the timelines straight. At least for my family, the new Disney+ series like The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka are more entertaining than the movies.

Despite that, we love Galaxy’s Edge for its immersive feel and will just hang around enjoying being in the space. I don’t know how hardcore Star Wars fans feel, but we don’t care about sticking to the old Batuu timeline because we didn’t know about it in the first place. Anything they can do to add more characters, droids, and street entertainment from the more recent shows would be greatly appreciated, but the Luke Skywalker character just gets a “meh”. The current stormtroopers walking around are fun, but there’s a lot of space to do a lot more in the style of how Avenger’s Campus handles outdoor shows.

    1. “I don’t know how hardcore Star Wars fans feel, but we don’t care about sticking to the old Batuu timeline because we didn’t know about it in the first place.”

You hit the nail on the head with this, but lost me with Luke Skywalker being “meh.”

At one point, I was told that the most common question/complaint about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was the lack of Darth Vader. I have no reason to believe that would’ve changed since I heard it.

Hardcore Star Wars fans aren’t enough to sustain SWGE. It needs the casuals too–who have no clue about the timeline/setting/continuity rules in the first place. That means meeting guests where they are, and adding entertainment and characters they recognize. That includes Mandalorian and Baby Yoda, as well as the characters from the original trilogy.

Avengers Campus is the perfect example. Let’s be honest: the “canvas” of that land is awful–ugly and industrial. But the presence of characters, entertainment, and fun moments elevates it into something better. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge doesn’t need to be a free for all like that, but a more alive environment with the already superior setting would be fantastic.

    2. The “meh” was for the idea of just adding another meet and greet with Luke Skywalker. Instead, as you said, the land could come alive with “characters, entertainment, and fun moments elevates it into something better.” They have built an incredible world and now need to populate it with characters and their stories.

    3. Ahhh, gotcha–sorry for the confusion.

I suspect this partly-incremental approach will continue to play out at Disneyland, and then something will happen all at once at WDW in May 2026.
