San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6 Coming to California Adventure
Disney has announced that Pacific Wharf will be reimagined as San Fransokyo from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film “Big Hero 6.” The newly reimagined land at Disney California Adventure will feature a place to meet Baymax as well as new spots to eat and shop.
This announcement was made during the “A Boundless Future: Disney Parks, Experiences and Products” presentation at D23 Expo 2022. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro shared the news and concept art, while providing no other details at this time.
In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Pacific Wharf is essentially the food court at DCA. There isn’t really any space for it to expand, as it’s abutted by Cars Land on one side, the parade route on the other, and the bridge to Pixar Pier. Our expectation is thus that this is a relatively small-scale addition.
Still, Pacific Wharf is nothing special, and any changes to this area will likely be enhancements. We doubt this will be a Pixar Pier situation where the end result is a lateral move–or worse. Making this only one IP will likely make the end result more focused and better.

I would leave the Ghirardelli ice place opened instead of shutting it down to a new place for the movie theme. Please keep the ghiradelli and the old pacific wharf restaurants there.
This mini-land has been about half San Francisco and half Monterrey, at least since Ghirardelli opened, right? As long as they keep the Pacific Wharf traditional theme of Free Sample Land going, this isn’t going to mess things up and may keep the area from going the way of the Mission Tortilla Factory.
I will be very excited for San Fransokyo if Disney goes all in (not “let’s throw around some red and some lanterns and gates and stuff like that” sad concept art, above). The animators did a great job in Big Hero 6 of designing this city. Let’s really see a slice of that brought to life by the imagineers.
I was imagining New Asgard there
Dude, that’s freaking brilliant.
Very excited to see Baymax come to California. One of my favorite meet and greets at Epcot years ago!
And I do agree keep the bread bowls, Aunt Cass’ Lucky Cat Cafe can definitely serve clam chowder!
Tom- love your blog!
Any update on magic bands at DL and DCA?
More dilution of the theme. I felt Pacific Wharf was perfect. This does not excite me (and I am a Big Hero 6 fan)
As long as they keep the bread bowls going at the current Pacific Wharf Cafe location, they can do whatever else they want.
Don’t make me chain myself to the front door.
I was thinking the same thing… I dream of Boudin.
