Universal Celestial Goodnight Fireworks Spectacular Testing at Epic Universe
After over a year of rumors, speculation and launch site installation, Universal has started testing on the first true nighttime spectacular at Epic Universe. Here’s the latest, along with an expected timeline for debut.
Since Epic Universe opened, the only nighttime production has been the Cosmos Fountain Show, which performs at or around park closing. Honestly, I’m not even sure whether Cosmos Fountain Show is its proper name or if that’s more of an informal name given that it occurs in Cosmos Fountain and is a show.
I’ve seen the Cosmos Fountain Show (or whatever you want to call it) several times, both from within Epic Universe and from my room at Helios Grand Hotel. It’s fine. I would hesitate to call it a nighttime spectacular; it’s better viewed as equivalent to the Tree of Life Awakenings at Animal Kingdom or projection shows at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
What has most struck me about the production is its potential, as the Cosmos Fountain Show features great music and entrancing fountains, but lacks that something extra to elevate it into proper nighttime spectacular status. It could easily be a 10/10 nighttime spectacular if it were fleshed out in a manner similar to CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular at Universal Studios Florida.
The other thing that has struck me is guest demand and expectations for a fully-fledged nighttime spectacular at Epic Universe. I’ve been surprised by the sizable crowds that gather for the Cosmos Fountain Show given its relatively small scale.
There have been dates I’ve done Epic Universe that haven’t been particularly busy, but there’s nevertheless a large crowd camped out in Celestial Park waiting for the show. I was actually taken aback by this the first time I saw it, as the portals themselves had largely emptied out but Celestial Park was inexplicably bustling.
I took the photo above on a 1/10 crowd level Sunday, after seeing literally no other guests in Dark Universe and only a handful in Super Nintendo World (basically just the slow trickle off Mine-Cart Madness). Now I know where everyone was–sitting in Celestial Park!
The dynamic vaguely reminds me of the years after Main Street Electrical Parade left Magic Kingdom, but guests continued to line the curbs awaiting a night parade. As with that, it’s possible that guests expect a nighttime spectacular at Epic Universe despite nothing being listed in the app or times guide, and are camping out as a result. (I’ve always wondered about the expectations versus reality impact of this on guest satisfaction scores.)
It would now seem that Universal is acting accordingly to comport with guest expectations, and will soon roll out “Celestial Goodnight,” a fireworks spectacular. Here’s a video from Universally Speaking on Twitter that captured audio testing early this morning:
The volume just got cranked!

In case the audio is difficult to discern, it confirms the “Universal Celestial Goodnight” name for the upcoming nighttime spectacular, which remains officially unannounced by Universal Orlando despite several signs pointing to its existence. (Par for the course for Universal to not announce until the absolute last minute.)
Back in December, the company filed a trademark for the name Universal Celestial Goodnight. While revealing the name and logo, the application was vague and only indicated it’d be for a show. However, it was pretty safe to assume that something called “Celestial Goodnight” wouldn’t be for a morning wake-up show in Super Nintendo World.
In the months since, Universal has been busy building a permanent fireworks launch site near the Helios Grand Hotel lake, which has included a control center and other infrastructure. See photos below via bioreconstruct, starting with the high-level look that includes the launch site peeking out from behind the hotel:
The most telling sign of all has been that Universal posted several jobs for fireworks technicians. Well, that and the fact that aerial photos reveal fireworks mortar tubes were recently delivered to the launch site.
As you can see from some of the photos above, stacks of tubes are wrapped in plastic from shipping. Two pallets of the tubes have been unwrapped, and the individual sets of tubes are staged at far end of the site.
Then there’s been the in-park work. Universal drained the Cosmos Fountain for various upgrades. On top of that, there have been a plethora of spotlights and other show support infrastructure installed around Epic Universe and outside the park, presumably for the Celestial Goodnight lighting package.
Officially, Universal still has not provided any announcements or updates regarding this future fireworks show, though it is clearly being developed and likely to debut within the next couple of months.
Early concept art for Epic Universe featured fireworks, a nighttime spectacular was tested at the park before opening, and leadership teased such an addition. But much like the dragons flying over Isle of Berk (remember those?!) there has not been much on this nighttime spectacular in the last year or so.
Our expectation is that will soon change. After first seeing video of the audio testing, we actually waited to write this article until Friday afternoon, giving Universal a chance to share a press release with official details. That has not happened as of publication.
Surely their PR team knew this was happening and word would get out–a sign was spotted yesterday afternoon in Helios Grand Hotel alerting guests as to the testing. I’m slightly surprised that announcement has not yet been made. It’ll presumably come next week.
Normally, we’d expect to see and hear fireworks and fountains testing, followed by the audio. It’s interesting the latter is happening first here, and could suggest that the show is closer to debuting than we’d otherwise guess.
We’d note that nighttime spectaculars are somewhat seasonal at Universal, with CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular not showing for much of the year. Also worth mentioning that it debuted almost exactly two years ago, on June 14, 2024.
With zero inside information whatsoever, my bet would be that Universal wants “Celestial Goodnight” will debut shortly before Independence Day. That’s a really tight timeline for a nighttime spectacular that’s yet to even be announced, perhaps unrealistically so. If this were Walt Disney World, our guess would be an October debut. But Universal does things differently and is often quick from testing to announcement to roll out. We’ll keep you posted!

I’m a big fan of nighttime spectaculars in general. I’m glad to hear that Epic Universe is adding one. We haev talked about perhaps doing a visit, and this strengthens the desire to go there.
