Ultimate Disney Dining Plan Guide
Using the Disney Dining Plan for your Walt Disney World vacation or wondering, “is the meal plan worth the money?” We have a ton of resources for evaluating the pros & cons of the divisive Disney Dining Plan; if you do determine it’s right for you, there are tips & tricks here for getting the most out of it!
This collection of posts is our Ultimate Guide to the Disney Dining Plan. We’ve used the Dining Plan over a dozen times and have also opted not to use it a ton of other times (we pay out of pocket far more often than we use the DDP). We’re neither blind fans of the Disney Dining Plan nor are we opponents of it, and we bring this balanced perspective to our articles covering the Disney Dining Plan.
The Disney Dining Plan can be a good or poor value depending upon how you will use it, and these articles will give you an idea of the best and worst ways to use the Disney Dining Plan from a value perspective, so you’ll know whether it’s for you (if you’ve yet to pull the trigger), or how you should plan on using the Dining Plan if you’ve already booked your Walt Disney World vacation!

Top Disney Dining Plan Posts
Disney Dining Plan Overview and Pros & Cons – Here’s all the information you need to know about the various versions of the Disney Dining Plan, including prices and what the various plans include. We also share our review of the Disney Dining Plan, and whether we think it’s worth the money. (It certainly isn’t for everyone–not even when it’s “free.”)
Disney Dining Plan Now Includes Alcohol! – If you’ve used the Disney Dining Plan before and just want a quick post highlighting the changes for this year, this post is it. Of course there’s the annual price increase, but the biggest change is the addition of booze to the Disney Dining Plan. Read about what value this adds (or doesn’t) to the value of this year’s DDP.
Walt Disney World Restaurant Reviews – Not all Disney restaurants were created equal. While none are so bad that they have rodents in the kitchen (well…as long as you don’t count Chef Mickey’s!), some Disney restaurants are surprisingly bad…and some are surprisingly good! Read our thoughts and opinions on each restaurant, as we give you some ideas as to our favorite restaurants and least favorite restaurants, and why we like or dislike particular restaurants. Just don’t read these on an empty stomach, as there are lots of mouth-watering photos in the reviews!
Top 10 Table Service Credit Uses on the Disney Dining Plan – The alternate name for this article is “Best Value=Order STEAK!” And really, that title would be all you need. Actually, it’s a bit more nuanced than that. This article ranks the top 10 table service restaurants at Walt Disney World in terms of objective value on the Disney Dining Plan. In other words, we examined the menus of all Walt Disney World table service restaurants and listed the 10 that are the most expensive (and thereby offer the most “bang for your buck” on the Disney Dining Plan, objectively speaking).
Best Counter Service Credit Uses on the Disney Dining Plan – Thanks to some high priced combos (like the chicken and ribs combo at Cosmic Ray’s or Fairfax Fare) and restaurants that serve expensive desserts, there are a lot of ways to maximize your counter service credit on the Disney Dining Plan, too. Some of these more expensive meals are even big enough to split, meaning that you can do breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the Disney Dining Plan if you use credits effectively!
Best Uses of Snack Credit on the Disney Dining Plan – That bottle of water or that banana you might spontaneously want? Bad uses of snack credits if you care about bang for your buck. Find out what items are a good use of snack credits. (Most of them are not nearly as healthy as that water or the banana…but they sure do taste better!)
Worst Uses of Snack Credits on the Disney Dining Plan – Same idea as above, but with the tips for avoiding common pitfalls in terms of snack usage. (Seriously, it’s easy to “misuse” snack credits, scramble at the end of your vacation, and totally waste snack credits–when you could’ve been using them wisely all along!)
Best Character Meals on the Disney Dining Plan – Just like the “Maximizing” articles listed above, except for character meals. Although this list is objective, in our experience, these are some of the better quality character meals at Walt Disney World, too. It does stand to reason that restaurants costing more would serve better food, so this shouldn’t be too surprising.
Disney Dining Plan v. Paying Out of Pocket – Here we breakdown our dining costs from one trip where we paid out of pocket and compared that to what we would have paid on the Disney Dining Plan. This post also includes a comparison of paying out of pocket to Free Dining, and explains why Free Dining isn’t really “free.”
How We Saved 50% on the Deluxe Dining Plan – The Deluxe Disney Dining Plan is a huge splurge, and way more food than most people will be able to eat. Disney counts on this, and offers the Deluxe Dining Plan at a relatively reasonable price point given what you can get on it, because Disney assumes you’ll skip some meals and not be able to “maximize” the Deluxe plan. We “beat the system” with the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan, and ended up saving a lot of money. Here’s where we ate, how much we saved, and how you can do the same (YMMV).
All Things Free Dining…
“Free Dining” Dates – Not currently available for the general public to book this year, Free Dining will likely have a ‘second wave’ release in the late spring or early summer. This post tracks rumors about Free Dining’s release date and other info about this incredibly popular promotion that offers the Free Disney Dining Plan for Walt Disney World vacation packages for eligible guests.
Free Dining Bounceback Offer – Bounceback offers are only available for current hotel guests at Walt Disney World, and not the general public. For those who are eligible, the bounce-back offer is far and away the easiest and best way to book Free Dining, and we highly recommend taking advantage if you can.
Free Dining for UK Residents – Also not available to the general public, but despite the name, this is available to all residents of the European Union. We’re guessing most people reading this aren’t residents of the EU, so that doesn’t do you much good.
“Is Free Dining Worth It?” – When it comes to Free Dining, doing the math is incredibly important–and we break things down here. Other discounts (such as a room-only discount) might be better for your family. Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch; you have forfeit an alternate discount to qualify for Free Dining.
Best Walt Disney World Hotels for Free Dining – Our hotel recommendations for each resort tier that participates in Free Dining. This is based upon our preferred resorts at Walt Disney World, plus the options that will save you the most money.
Top 10 Restaurants for Free Dining – A combination of the best and most popular Walt Disney World restaurants that you’ll want to book as early as possible during Free Dining “season.”
If you need personalized help with planning any aspect of your vacation including the Disney Dining Plan, or want someone to watch for the Free Dining promotion for you and book it once it’s available—we recommend contacting a no fee “Authorized Disney Vacation Planner” (Disney’s term for a travel agent) to get a quote and to help you plan. They get their commission from Disney, so none of the authorized (key word) planners will charge you for booking their trip and helping. Here’s one such recommended Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.

Thanks, Tom! One thing you might want to mention on the blog is that if you are traveling with kids, you can save a lot on DDP. The 2017 kids DDP price is $24.95 per day, and most character meals are OVER that price for kids. So we are not only getting a discount on character meals, we get a quick service and two snacks for free each day for the little ones–meaning that even if our adult meals are under the DDP price, we have a good amount of savings overall.
Hello Mr. Bricker, I love your weekly posting but i do have a question that confuses me. I have been going to Disney in Florida for years and have never been offered the bounce back discount. I have called to book the next year to get that offer and I am told that it would not work that way and putting money down on a vacation for the next year would have to be cancelled if we got the offer and Redbook the whole vacation so there was no advantage to booking a year out. I am very confused if you would not mind could you please explain all this to me I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
I have planned a trip this year for my son at the end of December and I did the dining plan for this one. My question is can any of the dining credits be used at Disney Springs and/or Boardwalk Disney?
Quick answer is yes, but you would have to know which meal plan options you have access to (Table-service/Quick service etc.) to know which restaurants you have the option of hitting at each location, here is the PDF of locations available with the 2017 plan: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/media/wdw_nextgen/CoreCatalog/WaltDisneyWorld/en_us/PDF/2017DDP_Locations.pdf
Do you have to order on the Prix Frix menu on the Disney Dining Plan?
We just booked our trip for may this year and we will have our one and a half year old with us who has the appetite of a four year old. I’m definitely not going to get the meal plan for him but was curious if anyone had ever been able to swap the dessert on their table service entitlement for a kids meal option since in many cases they are the same price on the menu. I never make it to dessert and being able to do that would be a much better use in our case of the table service entitlement.
If we stay in the Lion King Family Suite at Art of Animation, will we get the Quick Service dining plan or Regular? Thanks!
Hi Tom:
First of all I love all your post!! I always read them and re-read them before every Disney trip and they are the best and so helpful!
Now, I have a question, I’m such a coffee addict :p and I was wandering what are the best places in Disney World (parks & resort) to get a good cup of coffee?

Uhh…you know this is an unofficial fan blog, right?
Bigger question, why is this all caps? Are you yelling at Tom when you should be talking to an ‘official’ Disney representative?
Caps don’t necessarily mean shouting……some folks just type BETTER with them.
IMA BOUT MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE
This is my favorite post of all time.
This comment is absolute gold! Beyond the entertainment factor, it appears that Cheryl’s vacation must have been somewhat enjoyable, despite Tom’s complete inability to offer her some pure Disney magic, because her Facebook profile picture is a family photo at Disney. (Yes, I totally Facebook creeped her.)
Tom,
Thanks for all you do, we love Disney! My husband and I usually travel to Disneyworld with no kids every other year or so. In 2016 (Sep) we are taking the whole gag, 10 of us total, 4 adults and 6 kids between 10 and 14. We are getting free dining, being that all our kids are growing boys we found it more than a benefit for us. My questions it at table service restaurants especially, do all of us need to order a meal, we were planning on sharing (I don’t eat much and our oldest has Autism so has a really limited diet so usually just shares), so 10 people at the table only ordering 6 meals? Does that work, you just tell them how many you are ordering correct?
I want to know the answer to this also. Please help!
Hi Tom – Love your site and have been combing through it, especially while recently evaluating whether or not to use the DDP.
I’ve been looking at all the restaurant reviews…is there somewhere where you highlight the best choices for NOT using the DDP?
In several articles you mention where a specific venue may be a good “paying out of pocket” choice – but don’t see that specifically as an article header…help? Sorry if I’m a dope and I have missed it.
Many arguments have been made for us to use the DDP since we are traveling with a 5 and 2 yr old -but given that the (almost) 2 year old boy will only sit in a highchair for about 5 minutes before turning into a nightmare / trying to climb out – we have settled on not getting the meal plan b/c I do not think we will be able to maximize it (even though we would likely love to do lots of character meals – just not sure its realistic).
Any updates on the 2016 dining dates? We anticipate going October 14-21.
Against my advice, husband wanted DDP for budgeting purposes.
The Standard Plan is $185 per night for the 3 of us, my son is 13 yrs.
Our 6 night cost : $1,100 + tips for 6 TS = another $120; Total $1,220+.
Last year we spent almost $1,000 for all food AND souvenirs, but only stayed 5 nights.
Cons:
-We’re likely overpaying $100++ using the plan.
-The infinite details in planning ahead to insure availability & good value with the DDP when making so many 180+ ADRs (we weren’t even sure of park hours and events at this point).
-Feeling like we NEED to eat all this prepaid food.
Pros:
-Budgeting cost over 6 months is easy
-Enjoying some of the best food at WDW, without considering prices
-We love steak, salmon & lamb, son included… the $$$ choices
-Using snack credits at Epcot’s F&G tastings (& can covert 1 QS to 3 snacks)
-Not squashing my husband’s DisneyDiningPlan dreams 0:-)
We have been Disney visa card holders for a year and a half now and we weren’t notified early last year about the free dining plan opportunity. I called Disney visa card company to find out how I will get early notification and they said the only way they notify card holders of promotions is by mail. We are hoping to buy this package this year for fall 2016. How can I go about being sure that I receive early notification since I am a Disney visa card holder?
We are planning a trip and the dining plan does not include my 2 year old but he eats more than my six year old, is it worth it to have the dining plan?
If we do not add the dining plan, when we book our room & tickets, BUT, a few months later, free dining comes out, for our reservation time, can we add the free dining on at that time? Or, must we add the free dining, at the time of booking our package?
You can add it later but may have to change resorts depending on where it is being offered
Everyone loves discovering delicious new recipes, and an event this is a perfect opportunity to do so.
