Disney World Celebrating 55th Anniversary at Carousel of Progress D23 Event & Lunch with Joe Rohde
Walt Disney World’s 55th Anniversary “celebration” has been revealed! If you’re wondering how the company is going to pay tribute to the Florida Project’s milestone, the answer is, unsurprisingly, merchandise and special D23 events! This post shares photos of the products and details about the day-of festivities, plus my commentary and advice.
Let’s start with the good news, which is that Walt Disney World didn’t forget its own anniversary! After the dismal Disney+ synergy display five years ago, I was worried they might. Thankfully, they did remember they’re turning 55 and are doing something for the milestone, even if it is smaller scale.
When it came to Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary on October 1, 2021–the actual date–nothing happened. There was the livestream with Iger and Chapek (pre-Bob Swap) the previous night, but the morning itself consisted of a brief “moment” that occurred over the loudspeakers. There wasn’t anything else to acknowledge the milestone.
It’s been a similar story with 5-year Walt Disney World anniversaries for a while now. Back for EPCOT Center’s 25th Anniversary, we were just getting into the online fan community; a few vocal voices literally guilted Walt Disney World into acknowledging EPCOT’s 25th Anniversary.
By Walt Disney World’s 40th Anniversary and EPCOT’s 30th Anniversary, the D23 Fan Club had been established and it held celebratory events. We’ve been attending these major anniversaries for the last 15 years, and those were the two best. There were panels with legendary Imagineers and even special versions of Wishes and IllumiNations with extra pyro.
Nothing since has been nearly as good, but Walt Disney World’s 55th Anniversary sounds surprisingly promising. Here’s a rundown of what’s been revealed thus far…
Walt Disney World 55th Anniversary Merchandise
Disney Store posted a preview of a few Walt Disney World 55th Anniversary merchandise pieces, including a light blue T-shirt, blue hoodie, and Mickey ear headband. The shirt shows Mickey marching on Main Street in front of Cinderella Castle, with Americana attire. This is a superlative shirt, and one that I might actually purchase.
The blue hoodie features similar visuals, along with the four theme park icons as badges: Cinderella Castle (which looks like Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Paris), Spaceship Earth, Tower of Terror, and Tree of Life. It also features the marching Mickey and other graphics. The ears have the same park icon badges.
The logo for Walt Disney World’s 55th Anniversary is also revealed in this merchandise, and it’s a good one. A globe and 55 combine to create a somewhat hidden Mickey, with ‘Magical Years’ printed underneath in a banner. It’s likely there are several more items to come, as Walt Disney World teased this as a product line. They’re already off to a good start, minus that off-model castle.
WDW 55th Anniversary D23 Event
Disney has announced the next edition of the D23 Spotlight Series will be held at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in the Ballroom of the Americas on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 6 pm. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 28, 2026 at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific.
The event will celebrate “55 Magical Years of Storytelling” with the Walt Disney Archives, in honor of Walt Disney: 125 Years of Inspiration and the 55th anniversary of Walt Disney World. There are two ticket tiers, giving fans options for the celebration. The first is the panel-only option, which costs $59 per person (plus $3 processing fee). There’s also the VIP option for $159 (+$3 processing fee).
Here’s a full rundown of the events and ticket choices via D23:
Panel-Only and VIP Tickets
Hosted at an original Vacation Kingdom Opening Day landmark, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, D23 Members will experience an unforgettable program that delves into Walt Disney’s legacy of storytelling.
The event begins with a special session featuring Disney Legend Joe Rohde, a renowned former Imagineer and master storyteller. Rohde will share insights into the power of storytelling and reflect on highlights from his 40-year legacy with Walt Disney Imagineering.
The Walt Disney Archives will then invite guests on a journey through the history and storytelling evolution of one of Walt’s most beloved (and personal) attractions: Carousel of Progress. Archivists and Imagineers will unveil fascinating stories and discoveries, as well as newly acquired treasures added to the Archives’ collection during the ongoing Carousel of Progress refurbishment. Imagineers working on the newest additions to the Carousel of Progress will also join to reveal their own storytelling inspirations and share a bit of the magic to come to the attraction!
All guests will receive a limited-release event pin, featuring the classic Walt Disney World Resort logo—an enduring symbol of the resort’s storytelling since before Opening Day.

VIP Tickets Only
VIP ticketholders will be treated to a special dessert reception at the West Rotunda outside of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Mix and mingle with fellow members and enjoy two special character meet-and-greet opportunities. After the dessert reception, enjoy breathtaking fireworks viewing from the Contemporary Resort. It’s the perfect way to celebrate “55 Magical Years of Storytelling”!

Joe Rohde Lunch at California Grill
In addition to that, D23 has announced a lunch with Disney Legend Joe Rohde at California Grill on October 2, 2026 in California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The cost is $159 (+$3 Processing Fee) per ticket for Gold Members or $199 (+$3 Processing Fee) for General Members.
Tickets go on sale on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 11 a.m. / 2 p.m. (PT / ET) for Gold Members, and one hour later for General Members. I would be absolutely shocked if there’s any availability for General Members. This is the type of thing that is likely to sell out in seconds, with most Gold Members shut out and wondering whether tickets actually went on sale. It should be highly competitive, so be prepared if you want to attend. Here’s the official description from D23:
Step into the visionary world of the Imagineer whose creative genius helped shape some of Disney’s most extraordinary destinations. Guests will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch high above Walt Disney World Resort overlooking Seven Seas Lagoon in the renowned California Grill—the perfect setting for this intimate gathering.
Following your meal, fans will enjoy a special 45-minute conversation with Joe Rohde himself, including fascinating insights into his creative career, tales from expeditions far and wide, and the stories behind making the magic.
Each attendee will take home a signed copy of his new book, Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible, as a keepsake from this remarkable experience.

NOTE: To ensure a seamless experience for all, please note that parking is not available on site at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Guests are kindly asked to park at the Transportation Center and travel by bus or monorail to the venue. We also request that guests refrain from bringing additional personal items for autographs, or requesting photographs from talent.
Wayback WED with Legendary Imagineers
If you really want to round out your weekend and go all-in on Walt Disney World history, there’s also the Wayback WED event hosted by WDW News Today on October 2 and October 3, 2026. This is also at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at the Walt Disney World Resort.
This is the largest-ever gathering of former Disney Imagineers, creatives, and industry legends assembled in one place. This celebration offers Walt Disney World fans a rare opportunity to hear firsthand stories from the people who created the magic.
The lineup for Wayback WED is stacked, and will include none other than Disney Legend Tony Baxter, the Father of Figment. There will also be other former Imagineers who worked on the original EPCOT Center and Journey Into Imagination doing presentations and more.
I’ve been told that one of these features former Imagineers Tony Baxter and Tom Morris, who will be joined by Dreamfinder actors Steve Taylor and Ron Schneider. I cannot wait for this. I’m actually much more excited for Wayback WED than the D23 events, and look forward to these star-studded panels!
Our Commentary
Both of the D23 events sound excellent. Stuff like this makes me glad D23 exists and has people who care running it and willing to participate in its offerings. I don’t think I really need to make the case for the lunch at California Grill with Joe Rohde. That will sell itself, and sounds fairly reasonable for what it entails. (Quite honestly, this could be priced at $499 and it’d probably still sell out. Such is the nature of capacity-constrained, unique offerings in an affluent fandom.)
Instead, I’ll make the pitch for the panels. Joe Rohde will also present at this, which should likewise be excellent. He always has interesting and thoughtful things to say. We’d expect him to touch on topics including but not limited to the Disco Yeti, Tropical Americas, and genesis of Animal Kingdom. Rohde was recently at the D23 Expo in Anaheim for a couple of presentations, and we’d expect some degree of overlap with those.
Speaking of the D23 Expo, it also featured multiple Carousel of Progress presentations on the Center Stage in the Walt Disney Imagineering booth, with members of the Florida-based project team. My strong suspicion is that it’ll be these same Imagineers from the project team discussing Carousel of Progress and, if so, it’s not to be missed.
During D23, I watched a few of these presentations and chatted with the Imagineers on the project team after, and (at the risk of ‘spoiling’ a future post) walked away feeling very reassured about the direction of the reimagining and timeline shift. If you want more background and a behind the scenes look at the project, plus historical context from Walt Disney Archivists, this is highly recommended.
There are passionate people working on this, and they have interesting things to say. If they are the ones presenting (and I assume they will be), this will be a meaty presentation. I know a lot of old school fans have aversions to panels focusing on current or recent projects because they skew towards superficial marketing fluff, but that shouldn’t be the case here. These Imagineers got in the weeds at D23 Expo.
While I wish Walt Disney World were doing more to celebrate the 55th Anniversary, this should be a pretty fun weekend, and one that gets fans excited for both Carousel of Progress and a few of the other fan-focused projects that were just announced at D23.
Now here’s hoping that Walt Disney World has bigger and better plans for the 60th Anniversary of Magic Kingdom and 50th Anniversary of EPCOT Center! That should be quite the 24-month celebration featuring more than just merchandise and D23 events.
