Original Soarin’ Returns in February 2020!
Soarin’ Over California is returning to DCA for another limited run beginning on February 28, 2020. This will occur simultaneous with the new Magic Happens Parade across the Esplanade at Disneyland. It will return for at least the duration of DCA’s Food & Wine Festival, which runs through April 21, 2020. However, an end date has not yet been confirmed–meaning it could run through the summer, or even indefinitely.
The return of Soarin’ Over California returning makes sense and the timing would not be coincidental. The same thing happened last summer with OG Soarin’ returning to Disney California Adventure as counter-programming to draw people away from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. In retrospect, that was unnecessary, but it was nonetheless a nice win for both locals (who are partial to the “Over California” version) and DCA, as it provided a nice boost to the park for the summer.
We had the chance to experience the OG Soarin’ several times last summer, even racing over to Disney California Adventure to rope drop and ride the attraction (and only Soarin’) one last time before heading home. I’m relieved that we’ll be able to experience it again, but the question a lot of Walt Disney World fans have been asking on social media is, “what about Epcot?!”
This might seem silly. After all, the original is Soarin’ Over California and Walt Disney World is located in Florida. Moreover, Epcot is a park celebrating the various cultures of the world, not a particular state. Fair points, but I think there are a couple of worthwhile counterpoints. (Note: the remainder of this article is simply our rehashed commentary from the return last summer–but nothing has changed and we’d love for the OG Soarin’ to return to WDW.)
First, Soarin’ at Epcot is located in Future World, not World Showcase. Moreover, it’s shoehorned into the Land, a pavilion that is ostensibly dedicated to human civilization’s interaction with the Earth. California is not just the most biodiverse state, it’s one of the most biodiverse places in the world. With such a range of ecosystems, it’s hard to believe California is a single state. (What a place!)
This range of ecosystems is on full display in Soarin’ Over California, which primarily highlights the Golden State’s natural wonders (few of which scream “this is in California!”). This is what made Soarin’ a sensible location for the Land pavilion in the first place. Its farm, desert, coastal, mountain, etc. scenery makes it a natural counterpart to Living with the Land.
On this note, it’s worth pointing out that most guests to Epcot during the time it ran the original Soarin’ (with “Over California” dropped from the name) didn’t even realize the locations were exclusively in California. Unless you’ve visited Anza-Borrego, Yosemite, Tahoe, Malibu, Camarillo, etc., you probably couldn’t identify where the footage was shot. You might’ve just assumed the desert, waterfall, rushing rapids, ocean, orange groves, etc. were simply generic–but stunning–locations.
Most of the places in Soarin’ Over California are not nearly as readily identifiable as those in Soarin’ Around the World. Orange groves and coastline tend to blend together. The Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, and Great Wall of China…not so much. If Soarin’ returned to Epcot in exactly the same presentation as when it left, I’d hazard a guess that 90%+ of first-time guests would simply assume it’s a flyover of the United States.
While Soarin’ Around the World also highlights the natural world, it focuses more on landmarks. There’s a reason distortion isn’t as pronounced in the original Soarin–because instead of architecture and linear elements, the attraction primarily features geography that can mask distortion better.
I’m not particularly averse to Soarin’ Around the World, but the CGI, cheesy animals, and distortion has worn on me over time. Moreover, I think Soarin’ Over California is not showing its age at all. If anything, it benefits from its footage being real, whereas the extensive CGI of the new version will inevitably date itself much sooner.
That’s pretty much my ‘case’ for bringing Soarin’ back to Epcot. (There’s also the third option of running OG Soarin’ in one theater, and figuring out a logistical way to let people choose.) Okay, let’s review: that is more on-theme to the Land pavilion, less distortion, no CGI, California > the World…anything else? Oh yeah, have a nice flight!
For those keeping score at home, we totally called the extension of Soarin’ Over California at DCA. From our update last month: “I wouldn’t be surprised if this run is extended ‘by popular demand’ beyond this summer…Most Californians recognize that the Golden State is better than the rest of the world. I’ll certainly be heading to Guest Services after riding to register my ‘vote’ in favor of retaining the Soarin’ Over California version of the attraction.”
It’s also worth noting that wait times for Soarin’ spiked last summer, which was an anomaly as compared to the rest of the attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The local audience went wild for the return of the OG Soarin’, with applause upon seeing the Golden Gate Bridge and at the end of the Disneyland flyover.
The attraction itself is largely unchanged. The film was updated to a digital projection shortly before being retired, and it still looks crisp and clean. (DCA never had the problem with dust and debris on its film that plagued the Florida version.) The scents, including a new one, are as delightful as ever.
Personally, I hope the run of Soarin’ Over California continues indefinitely. Like Impressions de France, this is one film that simply stands the test of time. Actually, unlike Impressions de France, you never get an up-close look at any people (and their dated attire), so there’s not much to date the footage. Basically just the Los Angeles skyline, which has grown tremendously since ~2000. To my knowledge, almost everything else is virtually unchanged (actually, I think the particular orange grove is now a housing development–but you wouldn’t know from looking at it), which is the beauty of filming the natural world.

Great information- thank you!
Can Epcot get a Soarin’ Over Florida? That would be the most appropriate version.
Soarin over Florida would be a whole video of nothing but flat swampland.
Yes! Now I can bring back the golf ball bit.
i wish they would do a simple compromise and leave OG soarin in DCA and around the world at epcot. they used to do things like this to encourage people to visit both coasts but i feel like that’s gone away. or, follow star tours and randomly play one or the other (or film more and add to the rotation).
I don’t mind the CGI, but the “bent” images are ridiculous in the World version.
“Over California” is a vastly superior ride … I did Crooked Soarin’ once and will never do it again … not worth the time even if the wait is 0.
The scenery, sites, smells and even Disneyland at Christmas!
A Florida version would have been interesting … just not CGI!
Next time you’re at Disneyland … ride it once for me ….
Hi Tom! Do we know if this was extended again or has it reverted back to Soarin’ Around The World? I couldn’t find confirmation either way online anywhere. Thanks!
We were just in Epcot yesterday, July 1, and were VERY disappointed when we lined up to be loaded onto Soarin’ and discover it was NOT Soarin’ Over California! It was Soarin’ Over the World. It was so uncrowded in Epcot that day, we were able to tap our magic bands when it was our fastpass time and immediately log into My Disney Experience, and get another fastpass for minutes later!! I was very disappointed because I really do love the original Soarin’ Also noted while we were in the park, we saw ALOT of large groups of people, being lead by someone carrying a tall flag (like tour guides use). I thought Disney outlawed that practice? I thought this was not allowed that large groups of people could not hold fast passes and all ride together. A third observation, one which I never experienced before was this: I asked to ride in the B concourse of ride vehicle. I was told to go to row 2 even though there were only 2 people in row 1. Once we loaded the ride, I witnessed a cast member telling people who had just finished the ride, to get out of their seats in the front row of concourse C and get into row 1 of Concourse B!!! I believe it was a group of 9 people. Anyone else ever witness that before. Oh, and it was at 2 in the afternoon. Although we were able to get fast passes almost immediately, there were still people waiting in the standby line. How could this be?
Just rode Soarin’ California this weekend, Loved it! Great to see it back. It would be much better, though, if it was in higher resolution. Although I loved the original, I wish they had a new show every year.
I agree. The original Soarin’ is much better than the current one. I mentioned to my daughter recently that I wish they bring it back to WDW. For one thing, it doesn’t make sense to hang glide around he world but beyond that, the California theme just works better to me. I also like the natural filming in this version. The distortion on the current version is a real annoyance. I wish they would have done a Soarin’ Over Florida or the East Coast to make it more relevant to WDW.
You make excellent points about the strengths of the original Soarin’. I would love to see the original come back to Epcot!!!
The OG is my all time favorite! We were so excited to see the new Soarin’ and left very disappointed. It made it easier to spend our time doing other rides like Test Track rather than waiting in line to do Soarin’ multiple times.
I wish they would keep California Soarin’ at DCA… Or at least alternate between the two versions on a regular basis for variety.
I’m curious as to what the TDS version will be like. I hope they don’t muck it up by adding things like ninjas, giant robots, magical schoolgirls, and Chandu… Wait a second, that would be AWESOME…
“With such a range of ecosystems, it’s hard to believe California is a single state. (What a place!)“. Are you serious??? I’d rather take a beating than go to California.
Sounds like you’ve already taken a beating.
We love the original Soarin Over California. It just seemed more exciting than the new version. We love it when we get on the first row, I wish they could have figured out a way to hide people’s feet, like a black cloth or something. We have been on this ride at least 2 dozen times, and will still wait in line to go on again even with my double knee replacement a couple years ago!
Bring back Soarin’ OG to Epcot! Soarin’ Around the World is an awful experience – the CGI is terrible and the distortion makes it very difficult to watch. Moreover, the recognizable locations seems to encourage bad behavior by guests during the ride, moreso than any other ride in all the parks. Every single time we ride, guests around us are talking loudly during the ride, exacerbated by people reciting what they are seeing “Eiffel Tower! Taj Majal! Elephant!”. Soarin’ OG was one of my favorite rides and I still love the score, but the rest of the experience has been ruined.
“Cheesy animals?”
My wife swears there is a orange odor during the ride……??
Yes – for he orange groves. A Disneyland worker had to explain it to me my first time.
Yay! We’re going out for D23 end of August and I really miss Soarin’ Over California! Thanks for letting us know!
I love the original Soarin over California. I saw the new version when I was at Epcot a few years ago and didn’t think it compared with the OG. The entire OG ride, from the natural wonders, to the scents, to the flight experience were far superior to the new version.
I hope they will continue to show the OG, at least at DCA. I’m hoping to get back there sometime soon and would love to see it again.
