Tokyo Disneyland International Food & Kawaii Festival
After our first visit to Tokyo Disneyland, we shared some of our favorite snacks in a post covering what we tried while there. We’ve been back to Japan a few times since, and thought it was finally time to share some more of what we’ve tried. While there is not a “Food & Kawaii Festival” at Tokyo Disneyland, the park’s many snack stands might as well be one.
One thing we’ve stressed on the blog is how a trip to Japan doesn’t have to break the bank. Between the current value of the dollar versus the yen, low airfare prices, and cheap on-site hotels at Tokyo Disney Resort, visiting the Japanese parks could be cheaper than you think. We’re going to do a post (or series) comparing our costs of a recent visit to Walt Disney World to our current trip to Japan.
Snacking will not be a part of that post or series. If you want to do Tokyo Disneyland on a dime, do not make eye contact with the snack stands or allow yourself to hear their siren song. Think of this more like a kawaii version of the Epcot Food & Wine Festival (hence the post title). It’s fun to graze those booths and try the snacks, but the costs can creep up on you. Same goes here, and one person can eat a surprising number of snacks in a day. Well, if you’re a crazy pig like me, at least. Fortunately, I’m in good company, as Sarah loves to snack, too. Actually, I’m not sure the words “I don’t enjoy eating Disney snacks” have ever been uttered in a Disney theme park.
Rather than sharing photos of the snacks again, we decided to try something different for our current trip. Well, I should say our pig-padre Guy Selga decided to try something different, and we just sorta piggybacked on the idea. He put together a video of us trying 15 of the best snacks at Tokyo Disneyland:
Hope you enjoyed it. We’ve been dabbling with more video on our Facebook page during the course of this trip, and are curious what you think about video. Neither Sarah nor I are all that comfortable in front of the camera, which has resulted in some awkwardly bad (deleted) videos. Being awkward and bad at things has never stopped us in the past, so if you’d like to see us try vlog style content (in addition to text-based posts) please let us know in the comments. If you are not interested in vlogs, feel free to let us know that, too!
If you’re thinking of visiting Japan for the first time and are overwhelmed with planning, definitely check out our Tokyo Disney Resort Planning Guide. It covers much more than the parks, from getting there to WiFi to currency and much, much more. For more photos and an idea of what we did day-by-day during our first visit, read our Tokyo Disney Resort Trip Report.

Your Thoughts
Have you tried any snacks at Tokyo Disneyland? Have any favorites? What do you think of the vlog? Share any questions, tips, or additional thoughts you have in the comments!
I loved the video! I just booked plane tickets to Hong Kong and Tokyo a couple weeks ago, so I’m in hardcore planning mode (nevermind the fact that we’re not going until the last weekend of October). I like reading about what to do/expect (and this blog has been great for both HKDL and TDR!), but I also really like watching videos and there aren’t enough HKDL and TDR videos on youtube, so this is great.
You should try Periscope… video without the pressure of editing afterwards, and it’s gone after 24hrs, plus people can interact with you in real time which might help you not to feel awkward. but I love seeing the videos! It’s nice to change it up once in a while, and vlogswould be like a trip report without you having to write so much after the fact!
I really don’t like videos in blog posts. I come to blogs to read and see photos and, that’s what I love about this blog. The photography is specifically a draw for this blog. I am usually reading somewhere where I can’t really watch videos even if I wanted to. A vlog basically just means content I will never see. Your I’m really disappointed because I was excited to see pictures of the snacks and read your descriptions and, instead of the great content I’m used to from this blog, there’s just a video… that I can’t watch. 🙁
Great video! I prefer the pics, but this was actually really cool. The food there looks amazing!
Love the vlog! I do love your writing style and have enjoyed your blog for years, but a combo of the two would be an awesome addition!
More Sarah in vlogs!
I more partial to your traditional writing / photography entries, but vlog entries could be a nice occasional change-up.
I much prefer the normal text blogs that you write so well. I’m a long-time reader making my first comment. Thanks for the tremendous resource you have built in this blog. Your writing makes me laugh out loud, the photography is stunning, and the reviews and planning guides have been invaluable. Please keep the blogs coming! : )
I like the vlog idea!
Do you have a picture of the inside of those dumpling/mochi things? I’ve been wondering about those and their texture since Sarah posted a pic of the green alien ones on her Instagram! I’ve never had mochi before.
I’m not a fan of vlogs. I’m often reading late at night or during work (bad, but true). So watching videos doesn’t work for me and I feel that I miss out on fun content.
Please do mix it up with both! It’s lovely to see the park in action in the vlog, but your written word is more convenient and always makes me laugh. Plus, EAT THE FOOD ON CAMERA! Your pics always show the inside of things like the mochi and I was really missing that here! Thanks very much for this and the years of fun content!
My 10yo and I desperately want to try all of those snacks now! I do love the regular blog posts (and photos) but this was fun too, b/c it gives us a sense of atmosphere. A Tokyo Disney trip is not in our near future, so this has just pure entertainment value for us. At least partially, I read the DL and WDW posts for content/info reasons, which make more sense as readable rather than watchable material.
you’re both FANTASTIC!!! I love the videos
I like the vlogs, definitely fun. But I personally prefer written blog posts because they’re a little more convenient for the reader – although for a video you need to commit a certain amount of time in relative privacy to watch it, you can read a blog post wherever and break it into chunks if you’re short on time – which is usually the case for me at least.
100% this! Now I don’t have to write it all out because I was going to say the exact same thing. 😉
Another +1 for this–mostly I prefer text. However, maybe because it’s on food :), maybe because I saw this on a Sunday morning at home, I really enjoyed this one.
Why not just do a nice mixture of both vblogs and regular blogs? My wife and I are avid readers of your material and we’ve really enjoyed your vids AND your blogs. And who cares about being polished in front of the camera! Brian Williams was polished and look where he ended up – I kid I kid. But seriously, you guys are great and you’ll get more comfortable in front of the camera the more you do it. Keep up the excellent work, youve helped us out so much with our planning!
I think the vlogs are great, definitely adds character. Your professional still shot food pictures still set the Disney bar. I think there can be a good mix of content. Excited about your upcoming series breaking down the expenses, should be eye opening! Safe travels!
Oh. my. god. The purple sweet potato Scrump mochi were HORRIBLE!!!! So cute yet so entirely deceiving. I wake in cold sweats just thinking about them.
I love the “vlogging”. It would be great if you kept doing it and I’m sure you would feel less awkward with time.
I’m not American and I’ve never heard an accent like yours before, I love it!!
Love your work in whatever form it takes.
Perhaps I’m old fashioned but I prefer text-based blogs better. And while the video was good quality, I think you’re pictures really do the food justice, more than a video. Just my humble opinion though! I did love the look of some of those snacks and Tokyo Disneyland looks beautiful!
Nothing wrong with that. I’m old fashioned, too. It’s just that the “kids these days” want more video content. I far prefer writing, which gives me time to tweak my text to try coming across as clever. On video, I just come across as a babbling fool with plenty of “ums”, “uhhhs”, and pauses.
Actually, on video you come across as naturally serious and thoughtful. The better for your fans to appreciate that the comedic wit of your writing requires effort,..
Please please do trip vlogs, I would love that! I’m sure you guys would get more comfortable in front of the camera with a little practice! Loving all the instagrams, getting me pumped for when I go in a month.
Thanks for the feedback–hope you have a great trip!
