Coolest Souvenir in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge
One of the coolest pieces of merchandise in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is free low cost, and it’s available at both Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World and Disneyland. It’s not a park map, coasters from Oga’s Cantina, a stolen spork, “the joy of being there,” or anything cheesy. (Updated December 10, 2023.)
Not only is this piece of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge merchandise inexpensive, but it’s also among the most limited. Remember how we talked about Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers hourly capacity of under 50 paying guests, meaning that fewer than 50 lightsabers would be sold per hour?
Well, the hottest souvenir in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge actually has that number beat. The Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is only released in units of 100, making this the most elusive piece of merchandise in Star Wars Land. For those of you who aren’t fluent in the parlance of Galaxy’s Edge, we should probably explain…
December 10, 2023 Update: Since we first published this post, a lot has changed. Unfortunately, one of those changes is that the free Golden Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion has been discontinued. Honestly, it lasted far longer than we expected. While it was always in and out of stock, it was available in both versions of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for quite a long time.
While that’s the bad news, we always have some good news: the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion “empire” has been expanded with a new offering: the Silver Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion, which is also available exclusively in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
For those who have asked recently, we have spotted the Silver Spira this Christmas season. While availability is always subject to change, it appears that demand has dropped off dramatically. These medallions are now kept behind the counter (at least sometimes?), so you may need to inquire with a Cast Member about it. When we did, they pulled this out from behind the cash register:
As you can see in comparing it to the gold version, this Silver Batuuan Spira has a new color and packaging. As with the previous version, this can be purchased at Droid Depot, subject to availability.
The Golden Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is still highly collectible and was incredibly elusive for the first few months that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was open. It would literally “sell out” within the first two hours that it was restocked, likely in large part because it was entirely free. After that, it could be gone for days, sometimes weeks.
To our knowledge, the only way to acquire a Golden Batuuan Spira now is via eBay. We’ve seen those sell for over $150 (!!!) and that’s without the gift card being loaded. So you’re literally paying $100 just for the medallion. Those prices do seem to be coming down as of Christmas 2023, but the current prices are still pretty wild when you consider that these were free. The people selling them likely paid $0 for them!
Well, eBay pirates ruin a lot of things, and the Batuuan Spira was no exception to that. Presumably because resellers started stocking up on these “free” medallions in bulk, Disney stopped giving them away.
To that point, there are two key differences with the Silver Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion. First, it is not free–it’s $5 and requires a $100 minimum gift card load, making your grand total $105 (you can add more funds if you’d like).
Still, at a cost of $5, it’s literally the cheapest souvenir in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. It also has a substantial heft to it, making it worth the money if you want an in-theme keepsake that’s unique and will last, but won’t break the bank.
Second, it’s seldom out of stock. In visits to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in the last two months, we’ve checked Droid Depot multiple times to see if it was available. Each time, there has been a huge container of them behind the cash register (that’s where you get it–it isn’t out on shelves).
While it’s always possible that it (or anything) could sell out, we’ve seen nothing to make us believe this is still the “hot thing” in Galaxy’s Edge. The price difference between $0 and $5 also means a significant drop-off in demand.
Here’s everything else you need to know about the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallions…
The currency of Batuu is credits. If you have yet to visit, you may not know that. If you’ve already been to Star Wars Land, you’ve undoubtedly heard about credits a lot. When visiting any merchant in Black Spire Outpost at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, be prepared to hear prices and payment discussed not in dollars, but in credits.
Obviously, credit cards and US currency are not an ‘in-theme’ component of the Star Wars universe, but are necessary for transactions…and the land’s financial viability. (Likewise, Annual Pass discounts at Disneyland and Disney Dining Plans at Walt Disney World are sometimes referenced in oblique ways, rather than directly.)
The Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is the thematic solution to this problem, as it’s actually a scannable Disney Gift Card.
The hexagonal coin is a hefty piece of metal, featuring a Black Spire Outpost logo, along with BSO and Spira in Aurebesh. Even brand new, the coin has a weathered, antique look to it, further extending the lived-in authenticity of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge just a bit further.
While previously free, this is now $5 with a minimum load of $100. It’s going to be nearly impossible to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge without dropping at least 100 “credits.”
If you somehow don’t manage that feat at Oga’s Cantina, Savi’s Workshop, Docking Bay 7, and so on, the scannable gift card is valid at any shopping, dining, etc. locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World…as well as any other Disney destinations in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico. This means you can use it everywhere from Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the pricey new in-universe hotel, to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii.
Another positive is that the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is reloadable and can be combined with other gift cards online on Disney’s Gift Card site. This makes it something you can reuse again and again, bringing back to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on subsequent trips to Walt Disney World or Disneyland.
Perhaps this is unique to us, but we’ve also found it to be a good option as our “main” gift card due to its weight and very different appearance. We buy a lot of gift cards (see our Tips for Saving Money on Disney Gift Cards) to pay for pretty much everything in the parks at a slight discount. Without consolidating them, it’s easy to forget which has a balance, which is fully spent, etc. Consolidating them all onto the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion makes things easier. As with so many things, your mileage may vary.
Although not as relevant as it once was, the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is also one of the most limited items in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. While not technically limited edition, only 100 of these are released at a time, which is part of the reason they’re sometimes sold out.
The Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is now sold on both the regular merchandise side of Droid Depot and the build-your-own-droid side. If you don’t see a display of the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion, simply ask a Cast Member about them, as they’re usually behind or under the counter.
On one of the first days that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was open, we raced directly to Droid Depot to purchase one. Shortly afterwards, multiple lines had formed for the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion. For the most part, there’s no reason to rope drop Droid Depot for the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion anymore–it should be available throughout the day.
In fact, now that they’re not selling out so quickly, you might be able to find the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion at other merchandise locations at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, including outside the parks. We’ve spotted it at Star Wars Trading Post in Downtown Disney, but never its counterpart at Disney Springs in Walt Disney World (that doesn’t mean it’s not there, though).
To my knowledge, the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion was not something that Disney advertised on social media or via the Parks Blog prior to the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, so awareness of this offering has only spread by word of mouth.
Excitement about the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion long ago fizzled out, making it much easier to find. Each time we’ve gone into Droid Depot to ask about it, other guests around asked “what’s that?” and ended up purchasing one. So it’s pretty clear that this medallion is still relatively unknown…but it’s also unlikely that will change anytime soon. Disney isn’t going to suddenly start promoting a ~2 year old low-cost product at this point.
Overall, the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion is a nice touch and a pretty cool little offering to enhance the theme in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This medallion is fun to use and it’s probably one of the first pieces of merchandise that’ll be retired. We’d expect the Batuuan Spira Credit Medallion to stop being available at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World at some point. That’s just a guess–again, we could be totally wrong–which could make it one of the most coveted Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge collectibles down the road!
If you’re planning on visiting the new land, you’ll also want to read our Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Guide. This covers a range of topics from basics about the land and its location, to strategically choosing a hotel for your stay, recommended strategy for the land, and how to beat the crowds. It’s a good primer for this huge addition. As for planning the rest of your trip, we have a comprehensive Disneyland Vacation Planning Guide as well as a thorough Walt Disney World Planning Guide.
Your Thoughts

Hearing your feedback–even when you disagree with us–is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts below in the comments!
Disneyland: A people trap, set by a mouse.
Just got one this morning! I am really surprised how hefty it is. The man at the counter indicated they had plenty available, but I am still glad to get it first thing regardless.
The medallion is very cool but it now cost $4.99.
I managed to get one last August (Disneyland) without much problem. I’ve had to postpone every trip I planned this year so far. Now it’s wait to hear any news before planning anything else. If I can manage it, we’ll be there on opening day (fingers crossed). Thanks for the info, I’ll be looking for the silver one to make #2.
I’ve got a trip booked for early December and am crossing my fingers I’ll be able to snag one! I missed the original by a couple of days and was pretty crushed so maybe there will still be some left by the time I get to Hollywood Studios again.
I was excited to be able to get one at Disneyland in February. Thanks for letting us know about them!
Any information on when Savi’s lightsaber workshop will re-open in Walt Disney World? Is the Void currently open?
Interested, following to see if Tom has any info. We are going in early Oct. and had Savi’s set up for 5 of us. Hope it opens back up!
I think you’ll find the Void is permanently closed. Something about a copyright dispute.
Opened today for reservations
We were there last week and saw in Dok Ondars shop a credit that was $60. And this was a significant piece of shiny metal. Look cool, but not $60 cool
We were lucky enough to be at WDW last September and again in December, I had no problem buying Spira so I have 5 of them (And had no problem spending all the credit on each one!).
I hate to hear that these are sold out. I got one and it is the COOLEST ever!! I love showing it to real “geeks” and have them coo over it. I was just at the park (DL) last week and I told someone about it. I am sad to find out that they are sold out!!
I was told today that they’re permanently out.
That’s too bad. Our trip isn’t until June, but I’ll ask anyway. The kids will be making droids, and I was pleasantly surprised to get reservations for almost any time of day on a Saturday in June.
We were there last week and asked at every shop and were told that they were gone and they didn’t expect more. One cast member did say “never know what will happen when the Galactic Starcruiser starts operating.”
I would guess land. I just walked out of Droid Depot in WDW and the cashier said it there were no more.
can you use disney giftcards to “buy” one of these???
I would guess land. I just walked out of Droid Depot in WDW and the cashier said it there were no more.
No, you can’t use a gift card to purchase a gift card. I was just there on 2/6 & I tried.
I went today, (Feb 6, 20) and got one. The cashier said they just got a shipment in. They had them under the table and not displayed anywhere. I wouldn’t have known about them and I love it, so thanks! It took the cashiers a while to scan it, and one ice cream cart didn’t have a scanner so she had to type in the numbers which was a bit slow, but so fun to have.
Disney world or land?
A friend of mine got one last week but I just asked at World and they said they were sold out and didn’t anticipate getting any more. ☹ï¸
I was there on the 28th and got of them? they seemed to have a lot in stock.
I asked on Jan 30th, in the morning, and she said it was a limited amount and they are out and won’t be getting anymore. Looks like I just missed them.
Tom, we roped dropped Hollywood today. Got boarding group 31! Yay. But I heard from a cast member that these are gone. They were a grand opening thing. And they will not be getting more.
Have you heard this??
is it possible to transfer the balance from an eCard (gift card bought online on the disneystore) onto the spira card? if so, how is it done?
https://www.disneygiftcard.com/manage/
you can check your balance and transfer amounts between cards.
it’s a little stupid but i really liked using this card in galaxys edge. it felt like i was paying with “credits”
Is there a maximum amount one can load onto the gift coin (card)? I would like to add the amount I budgeted for that day in one transaction, and not have to reload it every time the the $100 runs out.
As far as I know, you can put up to $1000 on a gift card
It works just like any other Disney gift card (without the mag stripe) and can be loaded with up to $1000. $100 is just the minimum to buy it, but you could definitely load it with more. You can also link it in the disney gift card website (disneygiftcard.com) and transfer balances to/from it as you please. Makes me feel better to have a gift card on my account with a $0 balance (that I leave in a drawer at home) so that I can quickly move money to that in case I lose the gift card I’m carrying with me. Then, you can move the money to the one in your drawer at home, buy another gift card at the parks ($15 minimum), and move the money to the one you just bought. I’ve had to do this at least twice, not because I lost my gift card, but because I left the one with the money on it in the drawer at home! BTW, the Spira Medallion is really cool and definitely worth getting imho.
Are they also valid on the Disney Cruise ships?
Planning on visiting disneyworld the end of April. Is there a way to get the medallion before this time?
You can only get it onsite. I’m going in March and wanted to know the same thing. I did some Googling and saw a bunch of used ones for sale, so I called Disney and they said you can only buy them in Star Wars Land.
Visiting in Star Wars in March and hope to get one for son who is in 501st. Can anyone give suggestions for people in their 70’s? Any rough rides to avoid? Any place to relax?
Is there a pin that you set or can someone else use it if you lose it?
Are these refillable for return trips?
Yes, if you lose it, anyone who finds it, can use it.
It is refillable. After the initial $100, it can be loaded with as little as $15.
Can the credit on the medallion be used to pay for the Droid Depot?
