Disney World Reveals Villains Land Story, Maleficent Roller Coaster & Magic Mirror Dark Ride Details!

Walt Disney World has pulled back the curtain on Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, announcing the two headliner attractions, ‘twisted wishing well’ premise of the area, and name of the expansion. Here are full details about the Maleficent roller coaster and Magic Mirror dark ride, along with concept art, and everything that’s been officially announced thus far. Plus, our commentary and experience seeing the ride model in person at WDI.

This Villains Land reveal was announced during the “Horizons” Disney Experiences Showcase or Parks Panel presentation at the 2026 D23 Expo. As part of the presentation, host Neil Patrick Harris was joined by Walt Disney Imagineering creatives and other leaders for a series of conversations who discussed bringing Disney’s next chapter to life.

It was mostly about pulling back the curtain for a deeper dive into projects that were announced at the last D23 Expo, from Piston Peak to Tropical Americas to Monstropolis, and pretty much everything else that was announced two years ago. As the “one big thing” bombshell that punctuated the last Horizons Showcase, it should be unsurprising that the Magic Mirror once again summoned the Parks Chair…

Thomas Mazloum then in turn summoned head Imagineer Bruce Vaughn, along with Creative Executor Director Caroline May. The two kicked off the presentation by joking about all of the rumors flying around about Villains Land (see deeper in the post), and shared that they were ready to put those to rest once and for all.

They began with the official name for Villains Land, so that we can stop referring to it by the informal name. Are you ready for it?! Drumroll…

The official name of Villains Land is…Villains Land! No Disney’s Villains Land. No 8 word title. No punctuation marks, random capitalization, or anything else. As Bruce succinctly put it, sometimes the obvious name is the right one.

One of our pre-D23 predictions was that “Disney’s Committee to Activate Names: A Strategic Disney Naming, Branding, Attractions & Activations Committee ~ Turbocharged!” has been workshopping names for Villains Land the last two years. We feared they’d absolutely overthink the decision and give us an 8 word gem with multiple punctuation marks.

Thankfully, our predicted name for Villains Land (“Disney Villains Lair: Beyond the Mist & Into the Shadow Realm – MISSION: Escape the Dark Kingdom! ~ Presented by Babybel Cheese (a Bel Group Company) in Partnership with Scentsy”) is not coming to fruition. There’s something to be said for simplicity, and we appreciate that Disney has finally learned that lesson!

Even though this land will be full of mischief and darkness, Imagineers want it to feel like it belongs in the Magic Kingdom. And since most of the lands in the Magic Kingdom have “land” right there in their title, Walt Disney World will be following suit calling this area Villains Land.

Villains Land Story

Villains Land will tell an entirely new story. While the fiends you’ll find here may feel familiar since Imagineers are referencing classic characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios as inspiration, the overarching story is a brand new, original take on those iconic villains. The Magic Kingdom invites you into a fairytale and Villains Land is no exception…but with a twist.

Your journey in the land begins when you stray from the safe path and enter the bewitching and foreboding dark forest. There, you’ll come upon a broken twisted Wishing Well where a mysterious person once made an evil Wish. A wish so evil, that it corrupted the Wishing Well, broke it open, and infused the forest around it with the power of the Wishing Well’s poisoned magic, which now calls to our favorite Disney Villains.

Several fan-favorite villains, including (but not limited to) Cruella de Vil, the Evil Queen, and Dr. Facilier, have used this land’s cursed magic to conjure the perfect new lairs for themselves, and everything they could wish for.

The land will strike an elevated, elegant tone while the architecture of each lair reflects the style, humor, and fiendish personality of the villain that owns it. Along with that, the villains will receive updated looks that reflect their smart style (see above). These aren’t villains hiding in the shadows. They’re powerful, sophisticated, and they have impeccable taste, which will be reflected in the way that they look.

Villains Land is going to be absolutely massive…as you’ve probably noticed from the Giant Magic Kingdom Dirt Pit that’s now visible from the queue of Big Thunder. Of course, almost half of that is Piston Peak, so for context, Walt Disney World shared that Villains Land alone is on the scale of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. There will be places to eat, places to shop, and places to have a little villainous fun.

Maleficent Roller Coaster

At the 2024 D23 Expo, it was revealed Villains Land would have two major attractions, in addition to shops and restaurants. During the 2026 D23 Expo, Bruce and Caroline shared more of the storytelling behind each attraction.

The first is an exhilarating coaster experience, where you will come face-to-face with the Mistress of All Evil herself, Maleficent. You’ll race through enchanted briar surrounding her frightening mountaintop fortress – if you’re feeling brave enough to answer her invitation.

The Imagineering team teased that this coaster will include elements they’ve never attempted before on similar attractions, so it is set to be a truly groundbreaking project.

Magic Mirror Realm Dark Ride

There’s a second headlining attraction of Villains Land: a dark ride, featuring a whole array of your favorite Disney Villains – hosted by the Magic Mirror.

You’ll find the Magic Mirror where the Evil Queen keeps him in the catacombs beneath her pristine palace. After making your way to him, he’ll magically transport you into his mystical Mirror Realm to see things on the other side of the mirror.

There, in his ethereal realm of the Magic Mirror, you’ll be transfixed by countless Disney Villains conjured in ways only the Magic Mirror can do. A combination of special effects and physical set pieces will bring his Mirror Realm – and these iconic Villains – to life.

Although this might initially appear to be a boat ride, note that Disney is calling it a dark ride and specifically doesn’t use the word “boat” anywhere in the press release.

While there’s the possibility that this is the ride system from Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure at Shanghai Disneyland, the ride vehicle looks different. Unfortunately, we do not believe this will be the first attraction outside China to utilize that revolutionary ride system.

Instead, this looks somewhat similar to the one utilized by Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure in Fantasy Springs at Tokyo DisneySea (note the progressively higher walls on the side of the vehicle in the art above). Villains Land Background

Villains Land was revealed during the 2024 D23 Expo. Former Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro, who is now CEO, offered a sneak peek at concept art for the future in addition and teased what was to come in a few years. Following up on a blue sky daydreaming session two years earlier, the all-new Villains Land located ‘Beyond Big Thunder’ ended the event and received the most enthusiastic response.

During the last D23, Disney revealed that Villains Land is a place where poison apples are aplenty and magic potions can ruin your whole day; where once upon a dream is actually once upon a nightmare. For all those things hiding in the shadows, it’s time to join them as we lift the veil on a forthcoming Villains Land at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort.

This new land will be home to the Disney Villains we know and loathe from fan-favorite Walt Disney Animation Studios classic films. It’s a place where “happily ever after may feel like just a distant dream,” shared Josh D’Amaro. “Be prepared, you poor unfortunate souls,” he teased at the time. “It’s going to be a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be.”

The evil ambition of all these Villains means that the possibilities are endless for the stories that can be told — and visitors to the dark and thorny land should be prepared for whatever chaos might come their way. The new land will encompass all your dreams- er, nightmares.

Villains Land at Magic Kingdom will be home to two major attractions, dining, and shopping on an incredibly twisted grand scale. For the last two years, that’s all that we’ve officially known about the substance of Villains Land. Beyond that, permits and public filings, plus aerial construction photos all corroborate the ambition level of Villains Land.

Disney revealed Villains Land will feature inspiration from 13 of the studio’s classic villains in a twisted storyline uniting the animated baddies in one place:

Disney also pulled back the curtain on the conceit for Villains Land, which involves a magic power that conjures all of the Disney Villains to converge in one place. “In our story, a mysterious spell has been cast, summoning villains from every realm,” D’Amaro said. “In this land, heroes don’t come to save the day — and there may not be a happily ever after!”

Villains Land Rumors, Refuted

Earlier this spring, there was also the Magic Kingdom Bigger & Bolder Villains Land Rumor: Emperor’s New Groove Coaster, Maleficent Mega E-Ticket, Hades Dinner Show & New Third Ride! Just in comparing the headline subtitle to the substance of the D23 announcement, it’s obvious that most of that was wrong. Disney hasn’t revealed everything that’s in Villains Land, but we expect the other specifics from that rumor to also be inaccurate.

If you really want to get into the weeds, there was also a Permit Revealing Changes to Villains Land Show Buildings, But Not Scrapping of Previous Plans. That shows a slight tweaking of the show buildings, but it’s our strong belief that’s more a nature of the respective permits and not due to substance changes to the land.

With all of this, it’s as if we’re slowing piecing together a mystery. And as with any good one, there are bound to be a few surprise plot twists, turns, and misdirection along the way. In other words, don’t view anything you see or read as the gospel. Even when plans don’t change materially, concepts almost always evolve in smaller ways.

Even today, Villains Land is still ~4 years away. It was ~6 years away when first announced. It’s plausible for changes to the plans at this stage, and there is plenty of past precedent for such changes to occur.

This is especially true given that Josh D’Amaro has become CEO, and actual construction has not yet commenced, only site prep. There has been and is still the opportunity for adjustments or enhancements to Villains Land.

Has Villains Land Changed?

Given the above rumors from earlier this year and how much traction they gained, we can already anticipate fans questioning whether there have been material changes or cutbacks to Villains Land.

I want to reiterate yet again that I’ve heard nothing credible to suggest that the ‘meat’ of the plans for Villains Land have changed. To the best of my knowledge, Villains Land has always consisted of a roller coaster and a dark ride, plus retail and a restaurant.

I have no reason to believe that Imagineering ever went back to the drawing board and started over on its plans. From what I understand, to whatever extent there were changes, it was more a matter of enhancing existing plans to unlock their full potential. There definitely was not any starting from square one with a blank slate.

I can say this with complete confidence when it comes to the roller coaster where guests encounter Maleficent. That has been the plan all along, as evidenced by the original concept art, and at no point did it change.

I am certain of this in large part because I saw a working model of the roller coaster during an offsite visit to Walt Disney Imagineering offices in Central Florida. It wasn’t a finished or finalized model and was subject to change, it was very clearly and unequivocally a Maleficent roller coaster.

Although I can’t share specifics (that’s the nature of the beast), I can say that it was essentially what’s visible in the 2024 concept art, but realized in dimensional model form. There would be no way to swap out Sleeping Beauty for the Emperor’s New Groove. I can also add that this roller coaster should be worthy of the mega E-Ticket moniker if built pursuant to the original/current plan.

Based on several conversations that I’ve had, it is also my impression is that Disney has become increasingly bullish on Villains Land. The fan response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s the project for which creatives are most excited, as discussed in our article about Walt Disney Imagineering’s Comeback.

Likewise, it sounds like the project for which the new CEO is most excited, as suggested by his outward enthusiasm for Villains Land during My Meeting with Josh D’Amaro. If any project was going to change from the slate at the last D23 Expo, it’s most likely to be Villains Land–but for the better, not worse.

My expectation is that Disney is pulling a “Reverse Toy Story Land” with Villains Land. That they’re spending lavishly on the land, albeit within the original plan’s parameters. That it’ll have polish and detail on par with Tokyo DisneySea as opposed to a normal Walt Disney World project.

If these Villains Land plans end up being even modestly more ambitious than before, that alone is a win. And I absolutely think that’ll be true. Josh D’Amaro wants this to be a home run, Imagineering has the ideas and talent to deliver one, and will get the budget to deliver. There’s every reason to believe Disney is going big and bold on Villains Land.

Ultimately, we’re incredibly excited and optimistic for Villains Land. It fits the mold for a perfect Magic Kingdom themed land. Even though it’s become a franchise or brand, at its heart, this is a more original concept like the existing lands. It’ll obviously feature popular characters, but it’s not like Cars Land or World of Frozen or other recent single IP lands that aim to make guests feel like they’re stepping into a movie.

Everything we’ve heard thus far about the new land itself sounds promising, as does the Maleficent roller coaster and family-friendly Magic Mirror dark ride. Obviously, a lot will come down to execution, and there’s no way of knowing whether these are true mega E-Ticket attractions at this point, but there’s every reason to believe that Disney understands the stakes with this expansion to the world’s most popular theme park. Walt Disney World is going all-in on Villains Land, giving it the budget and space needed to create something special. We cannot wait!
