New LEGO Disney World & Disneyland Train Set
LEGO has announced the release of its new Disney Train and Station set, which pays homage to Walt Disney World & Disneyland Railroads plus Main Street USA Station. In this post, we’ll share photos of the upcoming app-controlled brick set, and thoughts about it.
The LEGO 71044 Disney Train and Station set is a motorized, scale version of the famous steam-powered locomotives seen at both Magic Kingdom and Disneyland, plus other Disney theme parks around the world. The set comes with four buildable cars, the engine, the tender, passenger car, and a parlor car.
Disney and LEGO’s newest collaboration comes with a bunch of cool details, including LEGO Powered Up elements and classic LEGO magnetic couplers to connect the carriages and move the train. The set also includes app-controlled functionality to connect via Bluetooth to the LEGO Powered Up app. This means builders can use their smart phone or tablet to drive the train. But wait, there’s more…
This LEGO set includes over 2,900 pieces, with the train measuring over 4 inches high, 30 inches long, and 3 inches wide. The Disney train station building measures over 15 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. The oval rail track diameter measures over 37 inches long and 27 inches wide.
The LEGO Disney Train and Station set also includes five classic LEGO Mini-figures: Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse, Chip ‘n’ Dale, and Goofy. Mickey & Minnie were previously released with the ~4,000 piece Disney Castle set, but the other characters all differ from that release.
The station building and each of the train’s cars has room for several mini-figures to sit. The locomotive features a large red fender, wheels with working coupling rods, smoke stack, and a driver’s cab. The tender contains a LEGO Powered Up Hub and a LEGO Powered Up Train Motor. The parlor car features rich interior detailing including armchairs, tables complete with flower vases and a small tea set.
The train station’s exterior facade features a balcony, clock, and 2 flagged towers. Inside, the station features a ticket counter, cafe corner, and a number of brick-built furnishings and details, including draped windows, wall clock, ceiling chandelier, and a tower room with a little LEGO surprise.
The Disney Train and Station set will contain a total of 2,925 pieces, and will retail for $329.99 in the United States. It will be available starting September 1, 2019. LEGO VIP Members can purchase the set beginning August 21, 2019. The 71044 LEGO Disney Train and Station is available directly from LEGO stores and online.
Here are some additional images from LEGO, followed by some of my thoughts on this set:
It goes without saying, but this is really cool. It should go nicely with the Disney Castle version of Cinderella Castle that was released a few years ago. Now, we just need a full version of Main Street USA, complete with cotton candy and hot dog scents.
LEGO has to toe the middle ground here, so the marketing can make it appeal to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World fans. That’s why this isn’t named specifically as the Disneyland Main Street Station, even though that’s clearly what it is. Much like the “Disney Castle” is clearly Cinderella Castle and not Sleeping Beauty Castle. It will be a bit bizarre to have both Magic Kingdom’s castle and Disneyland Railroad side-by-side in brick form, but think of it as a best of both worlds situation.
I appreciate the authenticity of the architecture, and how LEGO really managed to capture the essence of Main Street Station at Disneyland. Kudos on the many little touches, right down to the trash can style. There’s really not much to fault here that I can see, at least not right now.
My only “criticism” would be that this appears to be too small of a track to circle a Christmas tree. I don’t have any experience with (modern) LEGO train sets, but I’m assuming this will be pretty easy to remedy. (In fact, I see numerous options for under $20 via Amazon & Target.) If you’re wanting to replace–or perhaps race–the monorail circling your Christmas tree, you’ll presumably need those.
While I think this LEGO Disney Train and Station set looks really cool, this is one I’ll be sitting out. For me, LEGO sets are right up there with video games as the ultimate aspirational product. Just as I’ve barely made any progress in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild some two years after its release, the LEGO sets I’ve bought have mostly sat in the box, and are now in storage.
I love the idea of LEGO sets, but I don’t seem to have the patience or dedication to follow through with their assembly. (I’d say I don’t have the time, but that would be lying–I don’t find a way to make the time for them is more accurate.) In the past, I’ve justified this by telling myself, “at least LEGO sets are a smart investment.” In reality, they are are also one that takes up a lot of space.
That’s where I stand on the LEGO Disney Train and Station set. It being ~$330 helps me justify my decision not to buy it, at least for now. (Of course, it could become harder to resist if there’s a hot deal on it come Black Friday or Cyber Monday!) I am glad that this LEGO Disney Train & Station set is going to exist, though. I hope it sells really well, and Disney and LEGO continue to make sets like this. Who knows, maybe some day when I’m older, wiser, and more patient, an entire LEGO Disney Park will exist, and I’ll spend an entire year assembling it! 😉

This guy built the Disneyland Castle and part of Fantasyland including a working Peter Pan ride:
wow!! 12 yo?! fantastic.
Here’s a speed build of the new train & station set:
WDW Haunted Mansion got 10k supporters. It is now in the review phase:

Strictly speaking, the Mickey and Minnie minifigs in this set are different than the castle releases, as they have different outfits. Saying they have been previously released is kinda like saying both DL and WDW have the the same ride, Pirates of the Caribbean . Yes. But no!!.
I wish it was Disney World. I’m not wanting anything Disneyland. The push for Disneyland in last last year (or so) along with 3 terrible trips there makes me not want anything DL. Have had 20+ wonderful trips to WDW and will continue to go there. I love LEGO too but not DL.
Love opening the LEGO packages and building. BUT THEN WHAT??? Who wants it taking space and collecting dust?! Kind of like a puzzle.
I wish you could rent the sets.
You just need to get a big modular Lego table for your basement and pop open a tube of Kragle, then you’re good to go.
Plastic LEGO sets in the $300 plus range are a total waste of money. Parents have to Be wealthy or tell their kids this is a xmas and birthday gift. all in one.
Love LEGO. Been building with it all my life. But these prices for essentially modular injected plastic is getting ridiculous! The $75 for the X Wing was about as far as I’ll go. I’m “comfortable” and could afford this $330 set- but I won’t buy it!
Lego all the Disney things! Really hoping the Haunted Mansion “Idea” makes it to production. Sadly I’m not sure if the Spaceship Earth idea (https://ideas.lego.com/projects/a6fbfa6c-49b9-4f7c-8530-4b1c46ca0ad4) will gain the 10k supporters required to reach official review.
The train set looks great and it will be on my Christmas list this year! Thanks for the write up, Tom.
My son was raised on legos, I didn’t get it, just bought them because he enjoyed them. But at some point I realized my husband and I really enjoy building puzzles and so a few years ago he bought me the Lego Cinderella Castle and I loved it! This year I bought the Steamboat Willie lego and love it also.
I will definitely buy this train station. I do remember as I was completing the castle that I was wishing for the buildings of main street, how amazing that would be!
LEGO and Disney. Two of my favorite things ever. No complaints here whatsoever. I’ll be purchasing the day it is released.
ditto. I would be purchasing right away if I could. can’t right now, but definitely on the radar along with Steamboat Willie and the castle. The detail in the sets is amazing.
The Lego Cinderella castle has been part of my home Christmas decorations since it came out, and I’ll be definitely buying this to add to the display!
With Galaxy’s Edge open at DL and open by Christmas at WDW, my ultimate Lego Millennium Falcon will now also fit in.
We are definitely buying this. LEGO is how I taught myself to practice patience and sitting still for extended periods. I am thrilled with the details, ans was litterally squealing as I read.
LEGO if you’re reading this, up next, I would LOVE a space mountain set – along the lines of the architecture series, please.
I really hope this means we’ll get Sleeping Beauty’s castle soon. I know I’ll be buying the train set as soon as I’m able to! I finished the Jurassic Park T-Rex & Gate that was released last month a couple of weeks ago, and the Easter eggs alone are well worth it to me. I just recently started buying Lego sets, and hope it’s not something I have to do too fairly often. =oP Since I’m also a Funko collector, space is hard to come by, especially when your husband already complains that Disney is in every room.
