Sarah’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party Costume
Sarah’s costume for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World on September 28, 2012. Demonstrating that you can be a female who wears a nice-looking Halloween costume without going for the provocative look. Sarah’s costume is a non-literal take on Minnie Mouse, with an outfit that resembles Minnie, but doesn’t mimic Minnie’s get-up entirely. Sort of like a halfway point between Disneybounding and the character costumes Disney sells. After our much more literal Disney Halloween costumes last year, I think going with this “inspired by” look was a lot more wise and my tip to you would be to do the same rather than going for an elaborate costume that’s hot.
It may seem like a good idea while you’re putting it together in the cool autumn weather of a Northern state, but Florida is still hot and humid in September and October. Plus, you’ll be moving around a lot and navigating crowds. You’ll get more “props” (the greatest currency of all) with a more complex costume, but you won’t enjoy Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, which you pay a lot to attend, with a heavy costumes.
The Minnie costume also was a lot cheaper than those Beauty and the Beast suits, too! I know many of you like information about where Sarah gets her Disney outfits, so here goes: dress – $20 at TJ Maxx; heels – $20 at TJ Maxx; Minnie ears – $15.95 at the Emporium (or $10.99 on Amazon). You probably won’t be able to find that exact dress at TJ Maxx now, but here’s one that’s very similar for only $25 from Amazon. Even though I really liked her costume, there were tons of other costumes at the Party we attended that were far more complex. It’s awesome to see how “into it” guests get…but I’d rather enjoy those costumes by seeing them on other guests rather than wearing the costumes myself!
I assume you don’t want to see my costume (trust me, you don’t), but if for some reason you do…here it is. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! Surprisingly, there were a lot of little kids who were impressed by my costume. I had an awesome costume in mind, but we initially weren’t going to do Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, so I didn’t start assembling it in time to have it ready by the party. Luckily, I randomly bought a costume on eBay last year when I saw a good deal and stocked it away in the closet.
As I’ve been working on a few other projects that have diverted some of my attention away from the site, you may have noticed more quick posts like this that consist of a photo or a few, and some rambling text by me. I figure a post like this is better than nothing, and a few of my favorite photo blogs take this approach to their content. This blog is already fairly conversational in tone, so you may not have noticed the posts like this I’ve already done. Longer posts on a specific topic can be difficult, both from the perspective of time and because countless others online already have written things of the same nature. While I like to interject my opinions and photos in each post to make them unique, I’m still somewhat conscious of not wasting time on things that have already been written elsewhere. In any case, I’m working on some longer posts for next week and my plan going forward is a mix of photo posts with eclectic topics that strike my fancy mixed with longer single-subject content. Any feedback on that would be appreciated.

Your Thoughts…
What do you think of Sarah’s costume? Any low-cost or awesome costume ideas of your own that you’d like to share? Hearing from you is half the fun, so please share your thoughts in the comments!
We are booked to go to wdw on 10/19-10/25, universal on the 25-27th. We got tickets to the Halloween party for the 24th. It’s a Friday, was that a mistake? There are limited extra magic hours in the evening that week and the extra magic hours are at another park during the party through the weekday. We have an 8 yr old who is lukewarm about the princesses (she has been to wdw 2x) and a 4 yr old who is princess crazy and it will be her first trip. Do you have any recommendations to maximize princess viewing without minimizing the trip for our 8 yr old? I am also in need of a plan of attack for the party to ride attractions AND see princesses.
We so far have been unable to get an early bibbity bobbity boutique appt (2:20 at downtown disney on the 24th) and there are NO apps available at the castle throughout the entire week! I will call everyday to try. Also cannot get a dinner at Be Our Guest. We planned this trip because of “lower attendance” recommendations but have had more trouble with dining options than ever before.
I lucked out and got a dinner with Cinderella at 1900 Park and Fare during one of our designated Epcot days. Any suggestions? Also, parents out there, stroller recommendations? We have used the ones at the parks previously, is there a better way?

Love her costume! It’s great to see she didn’t take the provocative route. I’m a modest person, so I always steer towards conservative yet stylish. I have to give it to Sarah for wearing heels! For one night of fun, I say go for it.
Thanks so much for this fun posting! Sarah looks so cute!
I like it! I have to wonder “what were they thinking” when I see “sexy” princess costumes.
They are thinking, “I want lots of male attention!”
This is a perfect solution for me! I work at a performing arts center and we have a performance on Halloween. This will allow me to “dress up” without being really dressed up! Thanks!
LOVE the shoes!! If you’re used to wearing heals it wouldn’t be bad, but I thought Sarah was a nurse, so totally understandable that her shoes eventually came off. And your costume was cute too!
I didn’t really notice the shorter posts, and love the tone of your blog. Can’t wait to see your Food and Wine Trip report!!!
Love Sarah’s costume! Very pretty. I agree with Jen above re: the costume issue. We have three young boys and I’ve wondered how people are dressing at the Halloween Party. Is it family-friendly? The costumes stores market are often quite icky. Someone must buy them, I suppose. I am sure there are rules fo MNSSHP, but do people dress appropriately? Love your blog, short or long posts! Keep it up!
The costumes are generally family friendly; I’ve seen a couple questionable ones, but I think most people realize they’re at Walt Disney World, not a dance club.
Love your quick hit blog posts. I honestly didn’t really think about it until you pointed it out. I do appreciate your conversational tone and the humor you bring to your posts. Either way, I will read. And nice costumes BTW!
I hate overly sexy Disney costumes!!! Sarah nailed it here, she looks gorgeous and feminine without venturing into stripper territory. I actually finished putting together my Minnie costume today. Super excited to wear my sequined minnie ears again! Also, the short posts are appreciated. I’d prefer that you and Sarah move to Disney and release new trip report installments daily, but that’s a little unrealistic. 47 days till my next trip!!!
Love Sara’s costume. She is so cute. I would never attempt the party in those heels. I can’t even wear those sitting down. When I went to the party, I dressed as Pocohantas. I had a sleeveless costume & I could wear comfortable moccasins. Actually, I picked that costume just because of the shoes.
Pocahontas is actually a really good idea for a costume for that reason, specifically. I’ll have to tip Sarah off to that!
It looks great! Is Sarah following the DisneyBound Tumblr? I think that she (and perhaps you as well!) would probably really like some of the outfits Leslie puts together.

MNSSHP in THOSE heels?!?!?!! Oh, no, thank you, lol. My feet would be dead in 10 minutes. It’s an adorable, easy, cheap costume, tho!
Totally agree – great costume! BUT, I cringed as soon as I saw height on those heels. And I laughed when I saw the heels off in the picture of your costume.
Sarah’s costume is fantastic. I have to admit, I’m a little curious: were the heels comfortable?
They didn’t bother me too much. Sometimes she held onto my arm for balance, and that stopped me from walking as quickly as I otherwise would have.
Oh wait, you meant comfortable for her, didn’t you…? 😉
I hope you know you overacheived!
