2016 Walt Disney World Christmas Trip Recap — Part 3

In our San Angel Inn Restaurante Review, I mentioned that we walked out of Big River Grille & Brewing Works, and many of you asked to hear the story. Well, perhaps I oversold it in that post, but it’s really not much of a story…

Again, we were slow to get up and wanted to start the day with lunch at a nearby location. Big River fit the bill. We had last dined here a little over 10 years ago, and we thought it was fine then. Even though I couldn’t remember exactly what we had, this was the basis for our choosing it for lunch.

After being seated, I realized this is not what I remembered. At all. Now I know how Brian Williams feels, because I remembered the environment being totally different. There’s no way that’s a result of the interior being redone in the interim–that interior was easily 10 years old.

Anyway, we were one of 4 parties in the entire restaurant, which would normally be nice, except we were seated between two tables of families, both of which had crying children. Families with crying children do not bother me, particularly at Walt Disney World, where that comes with the territory.

However, I think I speak for literally the entire universe when I say that I do not find children’s cries to be a harmonious melody. I assume parents must agree with this, or else they would encourage their children to cry more, instead of less.

The point being: if 85% of the tables in your restaurant are open, why on earth are you going to seat a couple without kids right next to two tables of crying kids? I don’t care how the restaurant is divided up for servers, that’s just poor service.

We figured we’d just ask to be re-seated when our server came, but after that took an inordinate amount of time, we started to re-evaluate what, exactly, had led us to Big River Grille. Clearly, my memory of the place was suspect. Almost no one else was here. The decor would’ve been tired and dated by the standards of a real-world strip mall in Pennsylvania. At this point, we just decided to bail.

That’s how we ended up at San Angel Inn Restaurante, where (if you read the review) you know we had a lovely meal, enjoyed exceptional ambiance, and despite the restaurant being roughly half full, we still were not seated on top of any other guests.

Weather-wise, the last day was most pleasant at all. This day started in the low 40s, and I don’t think it ever got above 50 degrees while we were there.

For a lot of people, 50 degree temperatures in Florida may not seem all that appealing, but after summer and fall trips with unbearable humidity, this was our dream weather. I think I’ve emphasized the importance of packing for cool winter conditions a lot in these recaps, but I haven’t emphasized just how great cool weather is at Walt Disney World.

By the time we finished lunch, we only had a few hours remaining in Epcot, so we had to prioritize. Naturally, that meant focusing on the important stuff…

For some people, that would mean Frozen Ever After and Soarin’ Around the World. I guess we’re weird, as we didn’t do either of those this trip.

We did find time to do each of the following attractions multiple times: Impressions de France, Spaceship Earth, Living with the Land, and Gran Fiesta Tour.

Instead of doing Spaceship Earth yet another time, we opted to leave with plenty of time for a slow stroll to International Gateway…and a stop at Ample Hills. We managed to restrain ourselves and “only” stop here two times this trip, which is pretty respectable self-control, if you ask me. 😉

All things considered, we had a really good trip to Walt Disney World. I know I fixated on a lot of negatives in this recap–and I probably did a poor job of being balanced in that sense–but we really did have a great trip. The weather was perfect, the holiday decorations and entertainment added to the ambiance, and the slow pace we enjoyed made it an actual vacation, instead of just a trip. It was our best trip to Walt Disney World of 2016, and reinforced our belief that Christmas is the best time to visit Walt Disney World. Next year, we’ll wait until the week after Thanksgiving, though!

We know there’s a decent amount of ‘food for thought’ in this Walt Disney World Christmas trip recap…please share your perspective on what we’ve discussed in the comments below!
