Hollywood Studios Update – March 2019
Our March 2019 Walt Disney World construction updates begin at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which has a lot to get done before the August debut of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. In this DHS update, we’ll cover the latest on the Bus Stop Half Marathon, MuppetVision changes, and more.
We’ll start with the Bus Stop Half Marathon, and we’ve finally crossed the finish line on that! We’ve been complaining about the temporary bus stop situation for at least the last 6 months, and while things got better a couple of months ago when the full pathway opened, it’s still been a long trudge.
The new bus stop area is a significant expansion over the old permanent bus stops, no doubt in anticipation of a massive influx of crowds for the redevelopment of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The style is consistent with the park’s Streamline Moderne entrance design, which was inspired by the Pan Pacific Auditorium.
Suffice to say, the new bus stops look nice and with the Skyliner gliding by overhead and boats in the distance, there’s an engaging kinetic energy to the area. It might sound odd, but I could see sitting out here, relaxing, and watching the ‘traffic’ for a couple hours.
…And anyone trying to visit the park for opening weekend of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge might be doing exactly that. Albeit not by choice.
There are numerous bus loops, with gates numbered from 1 to 75, which includes charter buses and third party hotels. Official Walt Disney World hotels are the lower numbers, which are closer to the front entrance.
At this point, it’s impossible to say how these will handle the increase in guests to the park, but they sure look sufficient. Even as of right now during spring break, there was surplus capacity when were here around park closing.
Sticking to the traffic in this area, here’s some testing of the aforementioned Disney Skyliner gondolas.
This was the first time we’ve observed uncovered cabins being tested, which only served to increase our hype level. Here are a few more bus stop and Skyliner photos:
From dining at Jaleo to photographing new bus stops and parking lot signs, blogging is the ultimate Walt Disney World roller coaster.
This would be the type of thing some might send an intern to do, but I’ve found that when you want high quality photos of parking lot signs, you’ve gotta do it yourself.
Last month, we included some random ‘pretty park’ photos in addition to the park update stuff, to showcase the general beauty and ambiance. We also asked for feedback about doing hybrid park reports of this nature, which was resoundingly positive.
Unfortunately, there’s not going to be much of that for this month’s update, because the day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was bonkers crowd-wise due to spring break, overcast for most of the day, and grey at sunset. On the plus side, the evening was absolutely gorgeous…but some genius forgot to bring his tripod plate. (I did lug around the tripod all day though!)
Around the park, banners are up for the 30th Anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Back in Toy Story Land, spring break crowds and the dead end nature of the area make for a painful experience.
If Toy Story Land is on your agenda between now and late April (or any time it’s busy), we’d highly recommend following our Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park Opening Strategy & Rope Drop Tips or going later in the evening.
Posted wait times in Toy Story Land were still high an hour before park closing, but the crowds had thinned out considerably.
The nighttime spectaculars at Disney’s Hollywood Studios do a good job of pulling guests away from other areas of the park. Of course, going late means skipping Fantasmic, so maybe you’ll want to Park Hop to DHS for two separate evenings? Irrespective of your approach, avoid Toy Story Land between roughly 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Interesting to see an IAAPA award certificate for these Slinky Dog toys.
I personally like this sort of thing (and kudos on the win), but I’d be curious as to whether this impacts regular guest’s desire to purchase, or if it’s sorta a huh?! type of thing.
The main reason for our visit to Toy Story Land was for the obligatory look at Galaxy’s Edge from Slinky Dog Dash. (Click here to view the above photo larger.)
Not much has visibly changed since the last time we posted one of these. Rest assured, work is progressing on the ground level and inside the buildings. At least…we sure hope so given that pushed-forward grand opening!
Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy is opening in a few weeks, and there’s visible progress behind the cloaking devices over by Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster leading to the entrance.
Above is a look at new signage for the attraction.
More signage, this time of Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular because I realized I somehow have no photos of this when posting our last Walt Disney World News & Rumor Round-up.
Given the likelihood that this show will go dark and be revamped as soon as early next year, I really need to watch this again for the sake of new photos. It’s been a while.
With a similar motivation, I headed back to the MuppetVision area for photos of the remaining gags before they disappear.
This area is normally pretty quiet, even on busy days, as there’s not much going on back in this dead-end. However, it was nuts, with people sitting in front of a lot of the gags. My new plan is to rope drop the MuppetVision area soon.
After having several guests walk into my frame while trying to photograph other Muppet gags, I couldn’t help but audibly laugh out loud as someone waddled into my shot at the last second here.
If we’re going to end things on a high note, I don’t think it gets much better than that. We’ll be back for the next Disney’s Hollywood Studios update soon!

YOUR THOUGHTS
Are you sad to see the Bus Stop Half Marathon cross the finish line? Ready to sit outside the park entrance for a few hours watching the Skyliner while waiting for Galaxy’s Edge crowds? Thoughts on anything else we covered in this update? Any questions we can help you answer? Hearing your feedback–even when you disagree with us–is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts below in the comments!
Any idea when the Mickey and Minnie Runaway Railway ride will be open? I’m hoping to hear it will be open by August. Fingers crossed.

We are (nervously) going in November and I was wondering if anyone knows if they post park capacity closures anywhere. I know it happens, but I have never seen it personally. Is it on the app? The website? Billboards somewhere? I’d hate to spend the time traveling to the park, only to find it closed. One thing to wait in a line for a ride, another to wait to get into the park to wait for a ride. How does all that work? We have been so many times that we will probably mainly focus on Galaxy’s Edge/Food and Wine Festival/Christmas decor.
Thanks
It’s usually all over Facebook if a park reaches capacity. At least if you follow Disney groups 🙂
I’m only in a few and I doubt they’d have it. Is there one you’d recommend? I was hoping for something more “official”, lol.
Thanks
Looks like the tails are back on the Slinky Dog ride! 🙂
I had been wondering about the Skyliner. Thanks for update. Seeing them ride so smoothly though makes me wonder, are they stopping for loading/unloading, or do they act more like cable cars/gondolas in the Swiss Alps that move almost continuously so you step on as they slow down? The High Roller giant Ferris wheel here in Las Vegas (think of London’s Eye) runs continuously, and is so slow at loading even a mobility scooter can load. Still with all the children, strollers, ECVs, and stupid people I do wonder if the Disney Skyliner can load continuously.
I know there used to be gondolas in Tomorrowland….how did they load?
I would think these Skyliners would be in operation well before the opening of Galaxy Edge, at least I to HS. No educated guess on the date yet?
There is a good outline of how the gondolas work somewhere. There are 6 in a bay at a time, and they disconnect and reconnect so they bunch up in the station and then move slowly…like the nicer ski lifts do. I’m excited!! Though gondolas and ski lifts always freak me out with only that tiny little bar holding them up…
i thought the gondolas were supposed to have disney characters on them?
Thank you for all the updates!
We have a late August trip planned, and we’re delighted by the news that Galaxy’s Edge will open on 8/29! I’m eager for any thoughts on strategy… Do we get in line at 5 AM? Will there be fast passes? We hope to brag to our grandchildren that we were there on the very first day! Just need a game plan.
mlm…I actually really appreciate the updates for both the Skyliner and the bus stop. If you don’t like them you are not obligated to read them.
There are many of us out here that do want these updates.
I’m surprised at how Disney has deprioritized resorts guests. The bus stops are so far away. Guess it’s a great of option for Uber/Lyft. Self park Own vehicles and gondolas and boats are all closer to the entrance.
Can’t wait to see the practicality of the gondolas; will it be hot or fine? How long are the waits + ride to each park from CBR? As far as my kids are concerned, this is an attraction, and a scary one at that
Our first visit to TSL was in August last year. Those slinky dog light ups were out and my then 4 yr old flipped out because he had to have one! It was the one toy he picked for the whole trip. I dont think the award being displayed encourages parents to buy, i think their kids are already begging.
That’s funny, I’m LOVING the skyliner updates! So excited to see them in testing and the colour scheming is perfect! Keep ‘em coming Tom! I love reading your blogs, they keep us excited about our next Disney trip 🙂
Thank you and your wife for all your hard work!
Tom, I have been waiting for an answer as to if the Skyliner will be able to accommodate an ECV ? Would you have any knowledge if this is going to be possible ?
I have seen info that seat will fold up so that strollers and ECV’s can be accommodated. With both seats down they are supposed to hold 8 people so sounds plenty roomy to me.
Yes – they will absolutely accommodate ECVs and strollers.
Great shot of Galaxy’s Edge from Slinky Dog!
I’m really liking the color palette of the Skyliner gondolas. They’ll pair perfectly with a Florida sunset (and even dark summer storm clouds), and work well with the stations. I do SO wish that they had some kind of paint or wrap for those towers though. The gray looks so dull. So many colors/patterns would be better than the raw unfinished metal.
I love the reports on new bus stops, The walk was crazy. It is a lot closer to get into Hollywood Studios now from the bus stops, or not much? We have been taking a taxi to Hollywood Studios to avoid the long walk, would like to just take the bus from now on. Have a few trips coming up soon. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
“A few trips coming up”
Lucky! lol. From what I could tell when we were there during construction, it probably really depends on where your bus drops you off if the walk will be shorter. I think the temporary drop off location was the back end of the new bus dropoff/pickup line, so could be 50/50, but i’m sure Tom will give you better info than me, a lowly first timer to the park 🙂
Anyway, have fun on the trips! I hope to get back in about a year from now. I need to experience more. the little taste I got only made it worse. lol
I appreciate the transportion updates. We usually do WDW every two years and SO much (esp re: transportation) has changed since our last visit.
I’ve only recently stumbled on your blog. If it’s possible to love information telling you that your currently planned vacation is going to be mad crazy…and even laugh at the information sometimes…then that’s me.
Please keep ALL updates to HS coming, including those pertaining to “transportation.” I have a feeling that this park will soon become the epicenter of WDW and all interested parties should be able to take advantage of your insights and opinions. Thanks for all of your efforts. Our family was there the week before Christmas and many of your tips were utilized!!
Our next visit is scheduled for 2020 and we’ll be on the lookout for best time to visit, free dining and other valuable tips to plan our vacation.
If you’re not part of EMH? Yes, you will be in the back of the all the EMH’ers. Much better to RD on a non-EMH day.
Can I ask for a break from Skyliner updates? Once they open, you can post your thoughts. I’m sure they will be convenient to many (once the bloggers stop riding/reviewing them and there’s room for hotel guests, lol). To me, at least, this is about as exciting as a new bus stop.
Oh yeah, reports on the new bus stop are getting a bit tired.
I actually love the “infrastructure” updates (bus stops, construction, Skyliner, etc.). On the flipside, I’m not at all interested in any of the merchandise-specific updates. But my easy solution to that? I just don’t read them. I’m guessing they are popular with others and I don’t at all begrudge them being on the site every week or two.
MLM,
Thank you for speaking on behalf of everyone. We could not decide on our own if we had any interest in the transportation updates.
In return, I will speak on behalf of everyone. If you don’t have any interest in a particular subject, you don’t have to read the post.
I look for the Skyliner updates as we are there mid-August and are praying they’re open before StarWars opens up. So, I appreciate the updates.
Is rope dropping Toy Story Land a pointless, futile endeavor if Early Morning Magic occurs that morning? I’m worried that rushing to get there by 9am is foolish if there’s already a thousand people there
Man I wish either the Gondolas or the Bus stop had been ready when we visited in November. That was such a long trek to/from bus stop to entrance, and we did it 4 times with the mid day break. Anyway, I look forward to going back to experience the gondolas. they look fun. Hopefully the lines to get on them at the resorts aren’t terrible, tho anything beats waiting 20-30 minutes for a bus. Also looking forward to Galaxy’s edge. Looks exciting.
Sorry, didn’t mean to leave my other comment in your reply. I wanted to reply about TSL. We went on a Monday in November when they had their “Pay for Extra” not sure what it was called, but you could pay extra to get into the park early to visit TSL and get breakfast. Basically a paid version of early morning magic. Anyway, we didn’t pay and by the time we arrived at 9am for actual opening, lines were 2+ hours long for Slinky dog. TSM was fastpass only for most of the morning. Alien Swirling Saucers were 45 minute wait. Our fast fast was for Aliens at 11, so at least we got on something. But yeah, it was insane the whole day. Do what you can to get a fastpass for the area, but definitely stay on site at disney so you get the 60 day time frame rather than 30.
