Update: Tom’s Disney Book Club & Halloween
Just a quick housekeeping post for today as I’m going to be updating other posts. Although this site is a blog format, I’ve found that some older posts remain popular over time, so I try to keep things updated so as to not give bad advice. My organization system is poor (and that’s being charitable), so sometimes it can be difficult to find what needs updating, but I’ve identified several posts that need updates, so I’m going to be working on that over the next week or so.
You may have already noticed some older posts rise to (near) the top of the homepage as I’ve updated them. I’ll continue this trend, bumping things up to near the top, but not all the way up.
By the way, if you ever notice an older post contains stale information, by all means, leave a comment on the post saying so. WordPress has this fancy email notification system for comments, so I receive an email for any comment left on any post.
Okay, now on with the two main topics of this housekeeping update…
Halloween
Halloween season is now upon us at every Disney Park in the world, with the first Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party having been held last night. I’ll be talking to a friend who attended in a couple hours, and plan on doing some preliminary updates to our Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party Tips post based on their feedback. (We’ll have much better, first-hand updates after we attend the party.)
As I stated in our Halloween 2015 at the Disney Parks update, we were heading to Disneyland for the opening day of Halloween Time at Disneyland, and thereafter I’d follow up with a post with photo updates last weekend. You might have noticed that I didn’t follow up with such a post…
We did rope drop Halloween Time at Disneyland (which has been dramatically scaled back this year), but I forgot my tripod, so I wasn’t able to get night photos like I wanted. Sorry! Rather than doing an incomplete post, I decided to wait–I think we might head back for some night shots later this week. Stay tuned…
Tom’s Disney Book Club
What young boy from the Midwest doesn’t dream of growing up to be the next Oprah? That’s a silly question–they all do, myself included. I’ve finally decided to take the leap and try to be the Disney fan blogger version of Oprah. Since I don’t have the resources to give you all cars (unless we’re talking about the Matchbox variety), I’ve decided to go a different route…
Despite being functionally illiterate, I’ve decided to start a book club! That’s the logo for Tom’s Disney Book Club above; pretty fancy and not at all egotistical, right? I announced this in the latest issue of the Distinctly Patriotic Disney Tourist Blog Newsletter. If you’re not subscribed, you really ought to rectify that right now by signing up here–some newsletter critics have hailed it as the defining newsletter of our generation.
Additionally, I shared that our first title would be Walt Disney: An American Original by Bob Thomas, with the club “meeting” this Sunday for the first time. The first meeting would also feature a review of “American Experience – Walt Disney” that premiered this week (spoiler alert: I really enjoyed the show).
Unfortunately, a couple of readers informed me that they ordered the book but received an email from Amazon that it wouldn’t arrive until September 23. (C’mon, Amazon!) I was further informed that every library in the country doesn’t have the book, contrary to my statement that they probably do. (Embarrassingly enough, the OC Public Libraries don’t even have it…C’mon, this is the land of Walt Disney and that’s his definitive biography!)
So, rather than doing this book club thing the impetuous and half-baked way like so many of my ideas, I’ve decided to take a step back and give this more thought. Some of you who want to participate won’t have the book by Sunday, and now that I think about it, that’s also rather short notice for others who might want to participate but have real world responsibilities.
Then there’s the issue of just what “participation” looks like. The comments section of a blog post? A Facebook group? Something else? I really have no idea as to the best way to go about something virtual like this…or if enough people are even interested in participating to justify putting in a ton of effort to make something new for it. I’ve always felt that forums are most conducive to actual back and forth group conversation, but I’ve resisted forums here in the past because there are like 3,943 Disney forums, and social media seems to be displacing them. (Most importantly, I have no clue how to set up forums.)
Given all of these considerations, I’ve decided to postpone the first ‘meeting’ of Tom’s Disney Book Club from this Sunday until Sunday, October 18. Quite the delay, I know, but I want to actually give this thing a chance to succeed…BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO MISS MY WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO BE THE NEXT OPRAH. (Albeit on a much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much smaller scale…maybe more like the “next Carrot Top’s second cousin.”)
If you have any feedback as to the best or your preferred means of participating in a virtual book club, please share in the comments. I’m also open to suggestions for future titles, as I think that if this becomes a running thing, the goal will be one book per month with a month lead time to allow for acquisition and reading of the book.
If you have friends who are literate and like Disney, please help spread the word about Tom’s Disney Book Club by sharing this post with your friends via the social media buttons on the above left side of the page. Thanks!
YOUR THOUGHTS…
Will you participate in Tom’s Disney Book Club? Any recommendations for it? Excited for Halloween season? Any posts you’ve found that need updating? Share your thoughts on these questions and anything else in the comments!
Hey Tom –
My first Disney book was published earlier this year by ThemeParkPress. Since you’re going the Oprah route with this, I’d love to send you a copy. Interested?

You should create a Facebook group for your book club. I run a Facebook book club called The Scribe’s Library Reading Group and we have discussions on a set number of chapters every weekend. Since people do have lives you can just participate as you can thru out the weekend and that format works really well.
That’s definitely a good suggestion. Thanks!
I just purchased the book and hope to join in!
I think a forum would be a great idea and the very best way for us to have a conversation about the books.
Hi, Tom. I’m way behind on emails and so just now saw your post about a book club. I think it’s a super idea and I even have your first book (which I read years ago and remember nothing about!). Another book suggestion would be The Disney Touch: How a Daring Management Team Revived an Entertainment Empire by Ron Grover. I read it years ago and remember thinking it was fascinating. Just a thought!
For those in the “I have an incredibly long commute” club, audible.com does have this book available on audio book. I know some people feel like listening to a book isn’t as good as reading it but, audiobooks on audible can frequently be gotten cheaper than actual books and, carrying them around in an app on your phone is easier than carrying around an actual book or even a tablet or e-reader. Just a thought for people having trouble finding the book or finding a time to read it.
What about a Goodreads group? https://www.goodreads.com/group
They have a good format where you can have different posts for each book discussed, a space for off-topic discussions, polls, moderators, etc. and it’s fairly intuitive to use. Facebook and twitter discussions get lost in the shuffle pretty quickly — it would be nice to have a dedicated page especially if we’re all in different timezones/have real world things to do (sadly).
P.S. Read Walt Disney: An American Original by Bob Thomas when it came out and it’s awesome. A great first pick.
Great idea!
I’m very excited for this! I’ve had that book sitting in my saved items on Amazon so it gives me a good excuse to go buy it! I’m already in a book club with some of my friends but will happily dump them for this Disney version. Hahaha.
I Just ordered in my copy of the book! Excited to join the club!
I found the most brilliant solution for your forum/group for the bookclub: https://slack.com/
And here’s an article on how a woman is using it for her website e-courses: http://www.madevibrant.com/blog/slack
Got my copy of the book. Looking forward to rewarding it and being able to discuss.
Keep us all posted on what develops and how it will ultimately be discussed
I will definitely be participating! I didn’t see your first post about the book club but I happened to have just finished the book today! I read through a lot of the comments and there seem to be some great look a as far as format. I think a forum would be best but a private Facebook page would work okay too.
Long time reader, but never commenter (I’m pretty sure that isn’t a word). I am absolutely in for the book club idea. As a matter of fact, I just ordered the book from Amazon. I second the notion for putting out a calendar of a few books in advance. Even though there wouldn’t be a discount for ordering multiple ones at once, you could still potentially get free shipping from Amazon 😉
definitely on board for the book club- count me in! the beauty (or not?) of a virtual book club is that the meetings can’t turn into *wine club* meetings like other book clubs i’ve joined…
Haha, well, I’m sure folks could find a way to turn it into a wine club. No driving home from the meeting afterwards is one plus! 😉
If we are adding wine, then we have to have those little sandwiches served on a three-tiered serving tray….then we can call ourselves the “Finer Things” club. Well, if Pam, Toby and Oscar would let us in, of course 🙂
Hi Tom,
I too really enjoyed the American Experience episodes. 🙂 I actually also purchased the book and am waiting to receive it from Amazon, without even knowing you were doing a book club! Not I am really jazzed to read it. I have never been a biography person, but I really am interested by the history of Walt Disney.
*Spoiler* I was really disappointed that they did not mention Disney’s world fair involvement in the show. 🙁 So I know there has to be even more to uncover in his life.
Love your blog, love your photography, love you and your wonderful wife!
Even though the show was 4 hours long, there was a lot they didn’t touch. They also seemed to fixate on the unions for an inordinate amount of time as compared to other topics.
Also, I love the book club idea. Since it’s a bit hard to come by, I would recommend putting out the books for the remaining calendar. Maybe a discount if you buy the books as a set?
Well, I don’t sell the books, so I can’t offer a discount, but putting out a 3-month (or so) calendar is probably a good idea. Thanks!
I want to participate in the book club. How do I do that? I own the book. Bought it 5 years ago. I guess I will start reading it now!
Great idea, Tom! I’ve read Bob Thomas’ book twice and will read it again before the 18th. As for platforms, I can only recommend a Facebook group…I’m not familiar with reddit or GroupMe…but whatever you choose I’d like to participate! Disney War is a great title and another vote for Marty Sklar’s Dream it! Do it! I’ll stay tuned to what you have planned! Oh, what about Kevin Yee’s Tokyo Disneyland Resort book? LOL!
Tom,
You could create a subreddit on Reddit.com, perhaps r/tomsdisneybookclub and use that as your organization point for all things related to the club.
Hmmm…not a bad idea. I’m leaning towards making forums (for this and other purposes), but this might be a good alternative.
Hi Tom, I agree that a forum would be the best format for discussions and it could easily be limited to just the book club topics. There are a ton of free forum software out there (SMF, phpBB) but there are also plugins for WP to provide that functionality:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/discussion-board
https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/forum
There are also sites that host forums for you for free which could be an option as a trial.
I’ve been doing some research into forums, and I’m really liking that idea. I also get a lot of questions about the international parks and photography via email, and those topics aren’t represented well via existing forums. Thanks for the links!
I would definitely be interested in the book club. Have you thought about using something like GroupMe? https://groupme.com It’s accessible from computers, tablets, and through text. Users can customize notification settings to their liking. People could comment in real time or when they get around to it. Basically creates an ongoing group chat.
That looks like a great option. I’ll have to do some more research into it–thanks!
