Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar Review
Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar is located at the Disneyland Hotel in California. This review features photos of the specialty drinks, appetizers, and some of the cool details at Trader Sam’s at Disneyland Resort. We’ll also offer some tips for visiting this bar, as it’s a small location that can require some strategy.
First, some background. Drawing inspiration from the Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Adventurers Club, and many other locations from Disneyland and Walt Disney World, Trader Sam’s is a richly themed location, and is a veritable treasure-trove for Disney theme park fans with its excellent drinks, sight gags, and many many references to Disney history. You can take a look at some of these awesome references and gags in our Trader Sam’s Backstory & Details post.
Trader Sam’s offers Annual Passholder discounts and also serves food from its own menu and from the kitchen of the nearby Tangaroa Terrace. Both restaurants opened as part of the extensive recent overhaul to the Disneyland Hotel. Note that since this original Trader Sam’s debuted to rave reviews and proved immensely popular, a second location called Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto has opened at Walt Disney World.
Before we get too far and potentially lose the interest of those who don’t consume alcohol, you absolutely do not have to be a drinker to enjoy Trader Sam’s.
If you’re a fan of the Disney theme parks or fun in general, you will most certainly have a good time at Trader Sam’s. The ambiance and great backstory are what make Trader Sam’s an amazing place to visit.
If you’ve ever experienced the Jungle Cruise, you’ve encountered Trader Sam. He is the head salesman of the jungle–you know, the guy who will trade one of your heads for two of his (shrunken heads).
Well, the story of his bar is that he’s assembled all of the artifacts and correspondence from traveling friends that he has acquired over the years and put them all into one quaint little bar.
You might be wondering how something in Disneyland, a bastion of commercialism, can seem quaint, but it does. Trader Sam’s is fairly small, with a capacity of only 47 guests, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait to experience it on busier nights.
Because of this, we recommend visiting Trader Sam’s during the daytime hours or, if you must go at night, to go on a weeknight. Weekends are incredibly busy, and you’ll almost always find yourself sitting outside on weekends or waiting a while for a table inside.
Nearly every inch of the bar was decorated by Sam with help from his friends at the Jungle Cruise Navigational Company. You could literally spend hours exploring the walls. I did just that, and found myself constantly chuckling and discovering new layers of story.
The Disney Parks Blog has stated that Trader Sam’s decorations are influenced by the characters and lore in Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Tokyo DisneySea’s Tower of Terror, Indiana Jones Adventure, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (film). The Disney in-jokes and references don’t stop there, though. There are really too many to name (this Disney Parks Blog article lists a few to look for). My favorite is the hilarious tribute to famed Imagineer Joe Rohde. Has anyone else spotted it?
As an added bonus, if you visit around the holidays, you’ll find additional details and a seasonal drink menu. Check it out in our Christmas at Trader Sam’s post.
Beyond the cool ambiance and decor, which make Trader Sam’s a must visit, the menu is great and the unique drinks are…wait…unique drinks? This must be a typographical error, you say. Nope! Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar is one of the only locations at Disneyland that has a unique drink menu instead of what I pejoratively refer to as the Generic DisneyParks® Drink Menu®.
It is a prime example of what is wrong with the contemporary Disney theme parks: homogenization has replaced unique experiences in the name of saving a few bucks because bean-counters either don’t understand the “Disney Difference,” or think most guests won’t notice, anyway. I could go on and on with a scathing post about this, but I will spare you my ranting.
There are several unique drinks on the menu, a few of which are interactive in the sense that there are special effects in the building that are triggered by someone ordering certain drinks.
These are really fun to watch, and in the name of research, we’ve ordered every such drink that either triggers a reaction or has cool presentation. Some of these drinks include the Adventurers Club Kungaloosh (classic or new recipe), the HippopotoMai-Tai, Shrunken Zombie Head, Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum, Shipwreck on the Rocks, and Uh Oa!, just to name a few.
My favorite of these drinks is the Uh Oa! The menu describes it well: “Whoever is brave enough to conjure up this concoction cursed by Uh Oa, the tiki goddess of disaster, must be forewarned: When you mess with Polynesia, the tiki gods will squeeze ya (often with a lime)! Light and Dark Rums, Orange, Passion Fruit, Guava, and Grapefruit Juices, Falernum, Cinnamon, and Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice. Recommended for two or more guests.”
This drink is awesome. The presentation is great and it’s not just sugar water and juices with a splash of alcohol (like many of the Generic DisneyParks® Drink Menu® drinks). Not only is it delicious, but it’s a lot of fun with a group. Highly recommended.
With so many wonderful alcoholic concoctions, you’re going to need something to soak up the booze. Fear not, as the food menu at Trader Sam’s is also wonderful.
We’ve sampled most of the items on the menu, with the Pu Pu Platter, Ahi Poke, and Kalua Pork Flatbread being our favorites.
However, it’s all good, and not just in a “I’ve had a couple drinks so any greasy bar food will taste delicious at this point” kind of way. It actually all is good, with great flavor and surprisingly good presentation on a lot of items.
The dessert flight was also pretty good and compliments the sweet drinks, but I preferred the non-dessert appetizers. Even thinking about them now has me salivating!
Overall, Trader Sam’s isn’t just a bar. It isn’t just a restaurant. It’s an attraction. It’s one of the greatest things Disney has built in years. Kudos to Disney for taking a risk with this location instead of just making it a generic cash-cow poolside bar. I would imagine that the Walt Disney Imagineering team had a field day with this location, and it really shows. This is sure to be a favorite location of ours for years, and I highly recommend anyone who is traveling to Disneyland walk over to the Disneyland Hotel to check it out. It’s family friendly until 8pm (and your kids will love it!), so it is something everyone can experience. I really don’t have enough superlatives to describe Trader Sam’s – Enchanted Tiki Bar. It’s a must visit–as close to perfection as Disney has come in recent years.

My bestie and I do an annual girl trip. Well last year was skipped due to Covid (obviously). Finally have tickets and reservations for June 2021. Sad they haven’t opened Trader Sams back up yet. Those skippers want their jobs back. They take good care of the clients and make sure it’s a great experience. We love the skippers there. Hoping they open back up by June but feeling DLH will be closed a while due to construction. Please let people know when you hear anything. It’s our favorite spot. P.s. the Matterhorn after a couple of these drinks at night is a blast!!!
FYI most of these pictures are not working since the photo bucket debacle.
With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues
of plagorism or copyright violation? My site has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it seems
a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any methods to help protect against content from being stolen?
I’d truly appreciate it.

Being Disneyland locals, Trader Sam’s is a common destination for my wife and I. Since it opened, it has become incredibly popular and busy.
My recommendation for out-of-town visitors staying more than one day at the Disneyland Resort is to take a mid-day break early afternoon and head over to Sam’s for a quick libation and snack. You can take the Monorail from Tomorrowland out to Downtown Disney and then walk the remaining short steps to the Disneyland Hotel usually faster than just hoofing it from the front gates!
The servers there can make much more than the specialty drinks on the menu- and most are friendly enough if you ask for suggestions! My personal go-to drink is the Krakatoa Punch- not just because it’s delicious, but because of the explosive results of ordering it!
My wife’s favorite new tradition is to hit up Trader Sam’s for a few drinks, then duck back into California Adventure for a trip “under the sea” on the Little Mermaid ride. She simply loves to sing along with Ariel, Sebastian, and Ursula- and it’s made all the better for being liquored up!
So, yes- if you’re at Disneyland, go to Sam’s! Go early! Go often!
“Go early, go often” Haha, great tip. You’re totally right about it getting busier since it opened. Word has gotten out!
Trader Sams is *easily* my favorite thing that Disney has constructed at a park in the last ten years. Yes, I like it *more* than Cars Land or Toy Story Midway Mania.
Everything about it simply great. The food is tasty and theme-appropriate, the atmosphere is fun and lively (but not Spring Break co-ed lively, no, this is family-friendly lively), and the drinks are fun and tasty (and unique!). Moreover, I LOVE that they reference parks across the world, and not just from Anaheim. And the details are EVERYWHERE–plus the effects are fun!
I love that it is small and intimate, but it may be just a bit *too* small. It’s hard to get inside, and there really isn’t a “line” to wait in. The last few times we’ve just sat outside–which is almost as nice. The good thing about outside is that they have tiki torches blazing and have live music outside (typically playing island or beach songs–think ukeleles and Jimmy Buffet).
As the parks get more and more crowded, it’s places like this that keep us coming back. When we get frustrated, we simply walk over and get a break. I love it!
Hello, I check your blog regularly. Your humoristic style is awesome, keep doing what you’re doing!
That “drink container” (I don’t really know what to call it since it’s not a glass or stein or any other type of drink container) for Uh Oa! is really cool! Is it yours to take home if you order the drink? If not, do they allow you to purchase them?
Unfortunately, no. On the plus side, Trader Sam’s does have some awesome mugs you can purchase. Best part? They’re CHEAP by Disney standards!
Just returned from a trip (my first!) to DLR and Trader Sam’s. Turns out, you CAN purchase the Uh Oa! container– I opted not to, but am kicking myself now. Oh well, just another excuse to go back.
Great review of Trader Sams. I took a Disneyland vacation with the family in 2010 and had never been there. My wife and I took our three kids there for a late snack and some much needed drinks and good food for my wife and I. The drinks were great (I had Ship Wreck on the Rocks and she had the mojito) but the food was great too. We had the Ahi Poke. Would never have expected to have sushi grade poke at Disneyland, but there it was. Probably my wife’s favorite part of the trip.
We are traveling to the DLH this Christmas and wondered about bringing our five year old in there. Since it’s technically a bar, it seems inappropriate, but maybe I’m totally off base. Is it really a bar or more restaurant that’s family friendly? Thanks!
It’s really a bar. Kids aren’t welcome after a certain time–you’d probably be fine earlier in the day, but it’s a bar.
The more I learn of disneyland, the harder and harder it is to keep going to disney world every year instead of visiting disneyland for the first time…
It’s tough to skip a trip to Walt Disney World, but Disneyland is such an amazing place that it’s equally tough to skip!
Agreed!! Been going to WDW for years, just honeymooned there a few months ago actually, and now we’ve just booked our first trip to Disneyland for September! This blog helped pushed us to it, seeing how different it really is and it’s not just a smaller version of the Magic Kingdom as some people think.
I’m doing some googling work for my annual Christmas trip to dland this year. I started searching vegan and switched to alcohol instead. Loving this post. Didn’t even know this place existed! Is that Sean Gunn? Looking forward to this place and the upstairs lounge at the napa area!
Thumbs up on switching from researching vegan stuff to researching booze. Smart move!!! 😉
food pics are great, but the moving arms are eh, great article.
We went to this bar in Jan. 2012 and loved it. We sat at the bar and my bar seat started to sink before I knew it I was below the bar level. Too funny! I guess some of the seats do that at the bar and I won’t tell you which one. HA! HA! Love this place.
It’s almost like the Adventurers Club lives on… in a way. Shame you can’t get a Kungaloosh anywhere in WDW though!
Looks like such a fun place!
HEN-REEEEEE! He did it again!
